I would be interested to know opinions/facts on the attendances at soul nights/allnighters this year.

I heard that the Kings Hall was quieter than usual at the weekend. In my experience in recent months I think a lot of venues have been quieter than last year. Maybe one or two can confirm?

Are we experiencing a downturn in numbers or is it the fault of too many events?

Have the weekenders done better this year?

I think there are too many things on at the same time.Look at this weekend, as already said in another thread 4 all nighters on the same saturday ! Not only will they all suffer lower numbers, but so will the soul nights on that night and quite possibly anything that is on Friday night as well, really stupid planning IMHO

Shane speaking from a promoters view point Winsford has been steadily improving since i became involved 2 yrs ago. We are now getting between 250 / 300. Not for one minute saying its because i,m involved with it. But because of the the hard work and countless miles covered promoting the Nighter. I have noticed one or two venues are suffering due to lack of numbers. I think its down to a far wider choice of clubs available and clash of dates thats causing the drop in attendances

I don't think so, as some leave to do other things for whatever reasons, others return, but with the amount of watered down events going on now it's going to seem there are less about!

There does seem to be many weekenders and I have to admit I have been to couple of weekenders (week for Soul in the Sun) and they have been good.

Im mixed on this, yes its good more and more on so more variety/choice, etc. But if all on at same time, then all will suffer and people will be split on where to go. I do think that everyone who runs an event needs to try and check out (as much as possible) that doesnt clash, I understand this can be difficult if having to book in advance but a lot seem to try and have set dates i.e. first or end of month. Im not a promoter so Im just speaking from what I would do if I was.

maybe if you have 4 or 5 do,s on within a reasonable distance of youre home theres no need to travel that far anymore.

seams the only nites now that are real busy are first nites,anniversary,s or final nites.

I think your right about people staying localish.I travel a reasonable amount up and down the country.To say there is a hard core of travellers is fair.I notice certain people only at do's up north and some only at do's down south.Sometimes you get people travel from one to the other but it is usually for a first night with a big hype.

From my point of view, I have to travel as there simply isn't anything local but I feel I gain from this by seeing different people and hearing very different sounds.

But, I can only be in one place at a time and so therefore need to make choices as to which event to attend, if there are two or three nighters on any given night then I will chose either the one most of my mates are going to be at or the one with the best IMO DJ line up.

Cant speak for Soul Night Promoters but all the Peolpe who run the Nighters have got together and between us we think, have managed to post dates that dont clash. Its easy for us lot but people that run soul nights dont have the flexiblity that we have because there is only a handful of us running Nighters.

The toilets at Ponds Forge are appalling. I went in there once, and two guys were saying what a crap dj I was

you say really stupid planning but my event was booked long ago imo the bigger events dont really care if they clash with the smaller ones

maybe watered down means plenty of do,s with low numbers.

does seam these days that theres more promoters and dj,s around than punters.

new promoters certainly need to think about putting on do,s these days.

with only so many folks around a few do,s have got to dissapear soon.

slighty off topic but we are having a comedy festival in Sheffield very soon called 'grin up north'.

The places I go to are still quite busy. My regular haunts are ponds forge, soul or nothing, greatstone, wilton and the odd allnighter at places like middleton/crewe/manchester. I will be at the next 100 club too.

i think a lot of events are very similar musically so there isn't any need to go out every week .... maybe people should think about varying the sound and coming up with a sound of their own ... that way if you wanna hear that type of sound you have to go to that club ..

Numbers have been down at the Plinston this year from 300+ to an average 200/250. Fro all accounts of my mates that do events every wekend that's been the norm for most venues this past year on the whole. IMHO it's a number of reasons, too many venues chasing too few punters, more weekenders than ever on, old age!!! The weather. 2006 will see if this is a blip or a worrying trend for the scene.

Have to disagree with you a little there. When Stoke is busy you almost have to fight for a place on the dance floor. It wasn't like that on Saturday. There was loads of dance floor space. Stoke is still one of my favourite places though. Even on a relatively quiet night there is still an excellent buzz in there.

but if you give a monkey's, i think super-crowded venues are shite anyway. rammed 12 deep against a wall with nowhere to sit...what good's that for a fat, sweaty 38-year-old? the phrase 'it's gonna be a packer' always worries me.
