Just listening to the music used on adverts of late, I heard Elton John's version of "Are You Ready For Love". That started me thinking.... the original version by the Spinners is soulful enough but nowhere near as danceable as Elton's which, in it's own right, isn't a bad effort. I've certainly used the Spinners when DJ'ing and tweeked the decks a bit but IMO it still doesn't hit the mark for dance floor reaction like Elton.

Your suggestions for others and your thoughts in general please

Steve

Jeez and to think I thought I'd missed the point of the thread...

beat me to it...question "which pop song do you prefer over soul version" cue someone complaining the thread is about pop music :g:

Many soul songs were covered better by Dusty.

This isn't one of them, but how close did she come, eh?

Dusty Springfield......was a soul singer.....and in my opinion a good one.......had a unique voice ......top

I didn't even know the Elton John record was a cover version!

I am shocked Pete! You are the fountain of knowledge but it just shows that we dont know everything.

Im sick of hearing Elton John - Might put my original 12" up 0n Ebay- You never know some overpriced Bootleg buying idiot might go daft for it!

Them - Times getting tougher than tough,

better by far than the great Jimmy Witherspoon version.

Loads and loads more examples of British bands playing better Rythym and Blues than the original artist,

but then again, it could just be down to preferences.

Even so, it's about time people woke and gave these boys the credit they deserve :elvis:

To answer the question - I prefer Happiness is Version of I'll always Love my mama as opposed to the Intruders version and I dont know which version came first BOBA might be able to tell me as he is familiar with the band (Happiness is) and Phil Orsi

I think the likes of Dusty and Georgie Fame have always been accepted by Soul fans - the 60's pop artists were entrenched in US music and the producers and A&R men were so so on the ball. What I don't like is the trend in recent years ifor pop artists to go out to make a 'Soul' album - Cliff Richard, Hucknall ,Stone et al . Why do we need interpretations of Soul music. I don't think the 60's artists went out to interpret 'soul' - they went out to make good music and it sounded Soulful because of the material and their influences. IMHO. Mike

Totally agree with youe sentiments Mike,

but not so sure todays 'soulie's with their 'soulie friends' having 'soulie fun' wearing their 'soulie skirts' and 'soulie vests'

would quite get Georgie Fame

georgie fame - last night - Reprise, or

georgie fame - seventh Son - CBS

I think Georgie Fame has totally passed them by

May the best team win

Few nice versions of Burt Bacharach's Any Day Now, but Chuck Jacksons is unbeatable IMO, think Elvis even had ago.
