Of course Motown, which is being discussed in another thread, but i'm also thinking Stax/ Atlantic (Otis, Wilson, etc),Jackie Wilson, "backfield in motion", "harlem shuffle", you get the idea.

70's chart stuff as well - Spinners, Trammps, Tavares, etc. Also Philly plus "Young hearts run free" type tracks.I suppose you'd call it handbag soul!

I can't be the only one in this position.Does anyone think a night based around this type of stuff mixed with northern, of course, would work? Or would it be the start of a slippery slope to divorce

I'm much in the same position meself, me Mrs likes 60's, 70's, 80's, chart and non-chart, a bit of northern, motown etc so this type of thing would be right up her street. She'd love a night where they would play for example It's A Love Thing by The Whispers and next track play Do I Love You by Frank Wilson. I know everyone will go "Urgh" but that would appeal to her

Dave's right, John, Rob, Don & I do a charity night about four times a years, caters for this type of music - Handbag Soul.

We have our next one organised for this Sunday 28th at a local working mans club in Malvern and all 380 tickets are sold out, this should take us to just under £10, 000 raised for our nominated charity MND

As does Kev Jones @ The Raffa Club in Wrexham, about the same amount through the year but if you don't like your soul too heavy then Broughton Wings Club with Soul Sam & Brian Ellis is a very good venue, this is every month.

Sounds like you are a bit of a Soul Snob, nothing wrong with all those Philly/Motown hits apart from being overplayed a few times

Don't forget the 90's and naughties. Plus i am sure any DJ who collects all soul records be it Wilson Pickett, Whispers, Atlantic Starr, Temptations or whoever could do a night based on anything releated to soul it's a good way for general fans to attend a night to the music they love. They can still play the few obscure songs they don't know as soon as you get into soul you explore more and get into Northern more and stuff and will say there's the best nights

We've had these sort of nights in the Brighton area for over 4 years, but be warned the nights can be tiresome when the playlist starts to get predictable. Mainly because many of the punters can't open there minds to anything that they didn't hear in their influential years or something that's been used for a TV advert in the recent past.

i think the key to it is that if you don't want to hear the "predictable" stuff you can move on to other more "specialist" clubs ..... but if you do like what you get you can stay.

i agree with the original post . some people would like that. we do something similar and it works for us. lots of familair big soul sounds mixed in with a few lesser knowns ...... plus some funk, latin, beat etc. accessible enough for most i'd guess.

Went to one two months ago in Dumfries. I'm going back to DJ in September. Probably says something about my record collection. It was a fundraiser, it sold out and it was a great night out. The venue had a sprung wooden dance floor and it was occupied from opening to closing time. I enjoyed hearing the original vinyl version of Motown classics and had even more fun ribbing the DJ about playing tainted love. And I did that because I knew he would be sensitive rather than Tainted Love being a bad record. My wish to remain anonymous colleagues did play some current Northern tunes and a few people danced but with Seven days is too long the most popular tune of the night one can tell it was oldies a GoGo.

There's nothing wrong in hearing great tunes played out once in a while. The young people that were there were dancing to stuff that is not on a Film soundtrack or on an ad or on whatever 40 Motown greats CD is current. They had no preconceptions about the records they just danced to what are still great records.
