Is this a New York label, could it be the same guy as was on Angletone?

QCA press (Cincinnati) from 1969. I have no idea on the aritist origin, though. There were a fair amount of records from NY State pressed at QCA at the time. I don't think this was a real label, more like a one-off custom. If so, there are a lot more copies of this around than the usual 500 custom pressing records. If I can find my copy I can look in the dead wax for more clues.

Thanks George, I'm sure I've seen it listed as 1980 so your dating helps a lot.

I'd be surprised if this is a 1980 recording, I'm assuming we're talking about "I Found Someone" here? Gotta be late 68-71 period I would've thought?

Nearly closed I still wanna know if its the same chap from Elizabeth NJ who cut a blues on Angletone also about a Letter. Thanks for the dating. It's a good record, I'd not until now

I'd be surprised if it's the same the James Wayne as on Angletone. The Angletone guy was also known as Wee Willie Wayne.

 

It says here that he was in a mental institution at Leavensworth in 1968

Quite a few Wee Willie Wayne clips on the tube and it doesn't sound like him.

Dave, it's a different James Wayne to the Wee Willie Wayne guy, he was New Orleans, the Angletone chap is New Jersey. Ady

20. THIS LITTLE LETTER - JAMES WAYNE (James Wayne) (1960) Angletone 540

 

There were probably two James Waynes singing blues in the 50s. Our guy was from Elizabeth, New Jersey, while a more prolific chap worked out of New Orleans. A 1969 single on the Key-Lan label may be this James Wayne too, but there are few clues apart from the aural evidence. The song is a great driving blues with superb horns and tough vocals.

The James Wayne recordings were a wonderful find in the Old Town
archives, found in the mid-80s. Hy Weiss recalls the events
surrounding Wayne's session: "It was 1954. I saw him in the
middle of the night drinking at the Baby Grand on 125th St. I
took him out into the street and I called Jimmy Lewis who was the
guitar player at Atlantic. I said 'get me some musicians' so we
went down to the Bell Sound studio, woke the guy in the middle of
the night, and I recorded James Wayne. In the morning I had no
money to pay him; there were cops all over the place, we were
fighting all over in 133 Street. It was one of the funniest
nights of all times.

 

"The next day I brought him some money to pay him. He was in his
army uniform, and I didn't believe it was him, until he showed me
his identification papers! He had that big record 'Tend To Your
Business' - it was the most drunken session I ever had."

Only took me 9 years...but James Wayne and the Soul Soothers were from Dayton, Ohio. They were connected to R&B/blues singer Piney Brown. 

I don't know what happened to them. A similarly named act was playing in Texas in 1972.
