I'm making my first trip over to the UK (passing through hellish Heathrow to Europe notwithstanding) since I was 5 years old towards the end of this July. I'm looking for some recommendations on good stores, good events (hopefully 100 club is going off then?), and other soul-related bits in London. Also, if anyone is looking for an American living in Denmark to guest on a night or two, I always travel with a case of tunes...

 

Serious though, any and all recommendations greatly appreciated!

100's on the 6th and my fave mid-weeker Majestic is on the 4th. I'm sure there will be other volunteers. There are still record shops on Hanway St, in Soho and Camden, just ask around. Ady

We have a typical sort of local do going out in Walthamstow (end of the Victoria Line) 40 to 60 people, some rare sounds, some well known. Nice little club, dancefloor, always friendly - 15 mins walk from the tube, running 9.00 till 2.00 so night bus back into town.

 

Next one is the 27th July with guest DJ Kylee Sims.

go to google maps and cruise round berwick street and hanway street to see the record shops ,reckless records and sisteray etc . 2 worth seeing in hanway street too

and dont forget Portobello road market where there is 3 good shops and 2 kiosks in the market mall .

The One For Reggae Aficionados
Supertone Records and CDs, Acre Lane, Brixton: There’s nothing but reggae and dub to be had here, and loads of it there is too, from across the years. It stocks new and second-hand LPs with plenty of sevens. Very friendly. And if you’re in the area, check out Blacker Dread Music Store in Coldharbour Lane for more of the same.

The Big, Jack-Of-All Trades One
Sister Ray, Berwick Street, Soho: A wide-ranging stock in what used to be Selectadisc, spread across one large floor with LPs and sevens. It’s a great all-rounder that caters for the guitar crowd as much as those looking for all things electronic. Loads of CDs too, some of which are dirt cheap.

BM Soho, D’Arblay Street, Soho: The go-to place for nosebleed techno, the squiggiest dubstep, slinkiest house and everything in between.

Regarding record shops in central London I would say:

 

Hanway Street > Berwick Street/Soho.  (although sometimes it doesn't smell too good).

 

Of the other two main area that contain shops : Camden and Notting Hill , I prefer the latter (better vibe)

 

Portobello Road is a must if you're visiting (on Saturday). As mentioned there are a number of stores in the area and on Notting Hill Gate but don't expect any bargains.. If you visit Portobello Rd market I would go early  to look around because towards midday it gets very busy to the point of being unbearable. The side streets aren't a problem though.

 

There's also an offshoot market at Portobello Green which runs under the Westway from Portobello Rd to Ladbrooke Grove and is good for anything retro inc  a few record stalls. Also situated here is "Adam of London" so if you're in any way modish and  you've got some spare cash  and fancy a new suit this is your place.

I went last Sunday, small, but very freindly atmosphere, great music, you can spin tunes on the deck and where else can your order a burger and browse through record boxes?

 

Worth a vist is Boogaloo Records, Fulham (District Line to Fulham Broadway) and Alan's Records East Finchley Tube (Northern Line).

It's easy to get to Southwark ( and Waterloo / London Bridge which are close by) and shouldn't be more than 30 mins from other underground stations in Zones 1 and 2.

Hey Jon, was out there at the Camden Stables today and unfortunately learned that Nino passed away about 3 weeks ago. The stall he ran has been taken over by an antiques guy, no more records and he didn't have a clue where his stock had gone. Another seller there said that Nino and his girlfriend were both DJs, so maybe she's taken up his old stock? Even though I'd never met him or visited before still felt quite sad about it.
