Anyone here got copies of rare old soul show posters.

In our first house (after I married), I made the mistake of pasting up some posters from the Mojo Club (Sheffield) that I had 'liberated' at a few of the club's final live act shows back in the 60's. I put them up inside a built-in wardrobe in our bedroom but of course, when we sold the house, I had to leave the posters behind.

In addition to UK club posters, there are also 100's of great US soul show posters, many printed up by the likes of Globe Posters in Baltimore back then. Venues would commission such posters but many times the acts themselves would have 'standard' posters made up, justleaving the actual venue details off. When they were to it a town for a live show, these posters (with the venue / date details hand writtenin, would be fly-posted around the area.

Then, when the psychedelic era kicked in, loads of arty looking posters were produced, some being for soul acts such as Sly & the Family Stone & the Parliaments.

So anyone got paper or electronic copies of really interesting soul act posters from back in the day?

I'll post one up for a show that never actually took place ..... on December 9th 1967 Otis Redding was in Cleveland for a live show and a TV appearance ........... see here ..........   https://rockhall.com/blog/post/7045_otis-reddings-last-day-in-Cleveland/

Late that night, Otis & some members of his band boarded a plane to head for their next engagement at the Factory Club in Madison. They never made it as the plane came down in a lake near their destination.

The posters for that show had been produced & hung around town though.

Back to 1967 now & Sheffield's King Mojo Club ...........

Only actually attended the niter that was held on 1st April when the (fake) Drifters were the live act.

My mate Tom Sleight wouldn't go to the niter on 4th March coz no live act was on and we'd been to see the Alan Bown Set there the Sunday before. So he couldn't see the point in heading over to Sheffield once again. Didn't go see Zoot Money either as cash that week was short and we'd seen Zoot's Big Roll Band at the Boulevard (Tadcaster) on NY's Eve. Zoot & the group had turned up really late that night which had screwed up the night's timetable on that important occasion.

Anyway, Steve Jennison & Graham Bolton were over in Dony (from Hull) that weekend, so we took em out on the town and then gatecrashed a couple of late night parties.

Spent the middle of the following week in Hull (the place always had a great nite life scene back then). Grey Bolton And Phil Smith came back to Sth Yorks with us and we all went to the Mojo niter together on the Saturday (Tom Sleight also being a member of our small troop). Had a great time at the niter but did note down that there was a lack of 'birds' in attendance at the club that night. Made no mention of what songs the 'Drifters' performed or how good I thought they were.

A 1958 show at the Apollo in Harlem. Presented by radio DJ Dr. Jive (Tommy Smalls) ....

Tommy (Dr. Jive) also hosted another show at the Apollo around the same time on which Ray Charles also topped the bill.

In 1960 he got pulled into the payola scandal court cases and so lost his radio job. He moved on with his life though, working for Polydor & Jubilee Records.

However his life was cut short by cancer & he passed away in 1972 ..........

The Olivettes featured former Ikettes Frances Hodges and Sandra Harding (aka Sandy Harrell) who used to back Oliver Sain after Frances became pregnant. Not sure who the 3rd member was yet.

Quick google search reveals that Sandy and Ann Olivette were background vocals on Fontella Bass songs whilst Oliver was arranging and playing on them so this may be the original line-up of the group. He did recruit local talent throughout the area to handle background vocals.

I particularly like the "hand made" feel the graphic designer has managed to achieve with this poster.

some neat photos there chaps - nice one.

Fraid I ain't got nothing to compare with any of these historic posters apart from a pair I acquired sometime early eighties.

The first was a very basic day glo orange poster plugging Marvin Gaye's visit to Bradford in 1981, I say basic 'cos it was just hand drawn lettering (you could actually see the pencil guidelines) with no photograph or anything. It's amazing what falls into your pocket on a night out when it's windy.

The second was a much more professional jobbie promoting Smokey Robinson's visit to downtown Halifax in the same year I think. That came complete with a photo which I obtained by politely asking for it and was given it from the entrance foyer wall.

Also bought a pale blue tee shirt for the same concert that still fits to this day.

Actually that's a total lie - I have got a tee shirt but I'd be lucky if it would fit over one of my legs these days never mind my body.
