Yes a top nite for sure. I can remember being back stage with Pat Lewis, Al Kent etc and chatting to them all in a room.....but can't remember much about their actual performance  

At risk of boring everyone Steve, it was my first ever all nighter experience, so it's special to me. Don't remember that much in some ways, but vividly remember:

- the sound reflecting off the walls as I walked in. ....It was crap acoustically, but somehow that added to this 16 yr olds experience LOL

- the guy dancing in the top hat. .....who was he, as apparently he was renowned for it!!

- Johnny Caswell being my most memorable tune of the night

- me mum (RIP) telling me to "behave", as she was wise to it all as my elder brothers mate was a Wigan regular and had been in some scrapes

Never forgotten! !

One of the best nights of my soul experience 

Yes a top nite for sure. I can remember being back stage with Pat Lewis, Al Kent etc and chatting to them all in a room.....but can't remember much about their actual performance

The acts and backing band that night were shockingly poor and lame, with the exception of Edwin Starr, being the trooper and consummate pro he always was. Lou Ragland was OK. I think the fault was probably mainly with the backing band who seemed  to be playing a different set to the songs the singers were trying to sing much of the time  . When it was all in danger of completely falling apart, Edwin Starr leapt on stage and injected some direction into the whole shambles. He succeeded to some degree, but it was not a good showcase. Curiosity value only I'm afraid, but still a tremendously memorable occasion for having all those legends on stage in front of us and for that reason alone, it was a great night. 

I went to see the Ric-Tic Revue package a few days later at the Ritz, Manchester.

Almost the whole entourage put on a good show there.

I recall Lou Ragland being up on stage (with guitar) for most of the show. Seems that he was leading / organising the backing musicians by then (he used to hold a similar position as the O'Jays band leader back in the day). Only performance that was a bit underwhelming was by Al Kent,

I also got 'backstage' to chat with the artists and the atmosphere back in that room was quite electric.

Got loads of goodly photos that day, both backstage & of the show itself. The stairs at either side of the Ritz stage were still there then, so I plonked myself halfway up the staircase to the right hand side of the stage & it was a great location to get good photos from.

Good morning squire..........you've just brought to mind another vivid memory...........how Edwin split the hall down the middle and did the "war, what is it good for....absolutely nothing...." using the two sets of the crowd.

 

A showman for sure.

 

As you may know, when he settled in the UK he bought a property not far from me.  Saw him walking down the street in Atherstone one day............a most unlikely sight back then.......if you knew Atherstone you would understand why!!

 

When we bought our first house, he used the same solicitors, and when we went in for a meeting with the lady doing our conveyancing one day, he'd been in and left her a signed LP!!

 

You couldn't make it up............

to this day i have never so many people at an all niter ....it was amazing nite as alot of those hinckley allniters were....we didnt really appreciate them at the time,,,,,

Great night, sound engineers didn't earn their keep that night. They forgot to amplify al kents piano, so some guy poked a vocal mic into the top of the old Joanna.

Lou Ragland, just to witness him perform an anthem was worth the ticket alone. Brilliant night, loved it

Lynns dad (RIP) did a couple of jobs for Edwin, he told him his daughter liked his music & he gave him another signed LP for her, what a legend

I wish I could afford/get a scanner that will do a whole page of Black Echoes and I'd scan all I could and document it week by week

Can anybody remember if they had a second room at this nighter (the Hinkley nighter in general)sure they did,my memory isn't so good these days.

Blimey. Good question. I remember a large room full of record sales upstairs above the main hall, but I can't remember whether there was a second room.

I was gutted I missed this and for the life of me can't remember why I did. However I did get to the Ric Tic Review at Notts Palais which was a fantastic night.

Yeah I went to the palais one as well mate. Still got a copy of the Superlatives (yellow one) that I bought that night - funny how some things stick in your mind
