MIDDLE part of a record ........the break........not everyones cuppa...and silent

the OXFORD NIGHTS....the unexpected in a record can make it or otherwise...how many times off a sales tape have you bought a tune only to find out its been cut just before a "break" thats awful?

Stevie do you mean long pause's in records i.e the bit near the end of the Oxford Knights where you think the record is finnished?

A break in musical terms is usually a break in the beat typical of your 4 beats per bar record that is mainly on a loop system, and the break is usually a 'sound' rather than a quiet pause, hope i've explained that correct,

Think i see where your coming from you mean, bits in the record that sound awful, but are brilliant records with out that bit in them.

I bought a Ron Moody on Colpak The New Breed, sounded ace untill i got it played it then there was the awful......."better than all mojo man" on it that was cut off the tape

'middle- eight' is usualy termed as the musical break in a track...but that's a structured term...weird sound effects are a whole different thing

"Some of the best middle 8s reveal something new in the lyric, a subtle twist or revelation in the subject matter. This is a classic way of keeping a listener's interest; just when they unconsciously feel they've heard everything you have to say in the song, you rekindle their interest with something new"

back on topic, the breaks are a big part of soul songs and can (excuse the pun) make or break the song. The brilliant Johnny Bartell 'If this isn't love' could benefit from a better break imo.

A muso mate of mine described it as a bit that you sometimes stick in between verse and chorus to stop the tune getting boring.

If I understand the first post properly though, how about The Soul Blenders - Tightrope. Brill begining, bit disapointing when it it carries on and sounds a bit psych-pop then goes really spuds up later on in the song leaving you thinking what the feck am I listening to?

If I'm thinking along the same lines as the original poster to me the break is the bit in the middle of a vocal record (not instrumental where there is a "musical interlude" with no vocals. Usually between the 2nd / 3rd verse and the final verse of a tune.

My favourite, which I think is absolutely stunning, is when the strings come in in the middle of Juanitta Williams - Baby Boy. Have a listen

I ain't learnt me lesson & i will probably get panned for the next bit, but one of my favourite breaks is the one in the 'Newbeats - Crying My Heart Out' , where it fades towards the end & then comes back with a pounding base & piano creshendo !

Fave break is in Fidels "Im giving you notice". Music stops and girl's voice saying:-

"Are you gonna believe what I tell ya or you gonna believe what you see"

Fits in perfectly and IMO sums up women wonderfully.

I have this 45 by Bobby Sanders "The way I feel" . Nice tempo, nice back-up vocals but no break. Just don't sound right really.
