Just asking this as in the last two weeks I've managed to get 3 of my top wants for prices that even a Yorkshireman like me will pay. I've also noticed that it has been much harder to sell records over the last few months. I wondered if anyone else has noticed this trend? Or have I just been lucky?

The 3 tunes:

Cody Black - Mr Blue (for about 175 - never seen it for less than 300)

Parliaments - Heart Trouble (for 110 - again never seen it at less than 150 & missed it a good few times on eBay for 150 ish)

Terry Callier - Look at me now (for about 130, checked popsike and always has gone for over 200).

Anyway, serious question not a chuff, but I am chuffed and now skint. Also hope my missus doesn't read this.

Its so true..I would not like to be some dealers or people with large collections thinking they are sitting on a gold mine..The people willing to pay top price are falling away..

Fact records are coming down because they are harder to sell!

Guys like JM who have a world wide reptutation, and the service is second to none can hold out for the higher price, ok some things are listed at high money on his site, but it doesnt matter if it sits there for a year, he has the collatoral to do that.

The only things that will hold there money or go up in value are the must have's like £1000+ records or the latest £50 record that is being spun by so and so, so evey one wants a piece of the action so to speak.

I'm getting that impression myself. At least judgeing by ebay sales.

I've seen tunes that would have sold for around USD 150,00 a few moths ago not being touched although they were offered at "buy now" prices of USD 60,00.

But maybe its just a sommer months / World Cup thing and people have other things to do than loggin on to ebay.

definitely think there's a down-turn in prices...returning to the scene a few years back I paid Big prices to Big Dealers..then slowly reconnected with other dealers and realised i was paying way over the odds for some things...good deals are out there if you know where to look ...he;s a good friend now..but one of those guys i was put in touch with was Joe Dunlop who always gives a good deal and a fair price, obviously this is related to what he's had to pay! as with other dealers I regularly scout out all dealers prices and buy from whoever has what I crave !!! Pete Smith another good dealer always fair with me !!Keith Williams, Paul Capon,Ged Parker, Chris Anderton...aswell as the bigger Dealers...just shop around and ask...they may know someone with something you need !!

I still trawl through boxes at soul-dos aswell and mainly trade these days but as The Miracles sang 'SHOP AROUND' !!!

Had some great deals off Soul-Source members ....never use EBAY these days as i've lost considerable amounts of cash to unscrupulous Dealers (all USA ) just have to be very carefull, at least on here you can PM and ask around so as safe as it gets when BIG DOSH is on the table !!! If in doubt pull-out !! (and that's not birth-control advice !!

checked this on popsike and it as sold for $150 for an issue and over $200 for a demo in the past..

All the ones I listed were off ebay too, I must admit I rarely buy from anywhere else these days. Mainly cos I don't get out to do's anymore Soon will tho'

It all depends what people are after just because it was big money a month ago doesn't mean it's big money today, it's called supply and demand, prices most probably has come down because the demand has been satisfied, if it hasn't then who knows what price. Problem is that people judge price from a price guide and take it as read, it just a guide of price when published nothing else. Again take a demand record like Pat & Blenders, I don't see this coming down, does anybody else.

probably not in the near future, re pat and the blenders (sam dees has been a similar story for years).

you sell records mark so it's in your interest to pretent otherwise but that doesn't mean it isn't so (having said that, i buy them so there's my vested interest )

Records maybe just fetching a more realistic price IMHO. Records at the top end are still fetching top dollar and most others are still selling for more than they are worth. Still a huge market out there.

Can you back that "fact" up Dan? most dealers I know have larger mailing lists than ever. Too many dealers can't afford to hold onto records as they have to turn them over to get the cash flowing and don't have the resources that many larger dealers do and therefore have to let them go cheaper than they would like. The larger dealers can and do hold onto records because they can see the price for some rising in the future not falling.

Many records are sold without even being listed so you don't always see the whole picture.

Ask yourself why it's fetched $150 and $200? It's a £50 record, tops, hardly in demand and not that rare so why does some one pay these prices? Bit of homework, biit of searching and I bet they could have got one from a dealer at a more realistic price, the same for many records that are sold on e-bay. E-bay not a true reflection of the actual price of a record IMHO, just shows the lack of knowledge in some cases and the must have mentality of some buyers.

I reckon £1200 to £1500 min ngood nick so the one on e-bay not that cheap really. Demand will always be there for records whilst there is still a scene.

I'm not suggesting anything Dan, never mentioned a quantity, it might just be the odd record that they think will get a re-activation in the near future or one they ahve just got nin thsat has started to gain spins so they hold it for a while until demand is greater.

of course demand will always be there - not saying copies of the sensations will ever be around for £100 because most people, having paid more for them than that or seen their value go way above that, will never sell them for less, or much less...human nature.

you can't make an argument on the back of one sale, though. vg copies of demanding man went for that and more in 2004. it's no more scientific than my 'feeling' is it?

i'd agree that the top end sounds will hold their value more than others because i) one of the reasons they're top end sounds is that there are fewer of them so there's a simple supply and demand argument and ii) still lots of wannabe djs out there and people who just want to have the big records (nothing wrong with that by the way, i'd love to have them all)

but simple economics and demographics tell you it HAS to come down eventually, as every market in the world does when faced with a recession (which we're in, or very close to), a collapse in confidence (which threads like this obviously don't help) and the death or ageing of members of that market (which is happening, obviously).

i think it peaked two years ago and is on the way down. certainly think £100-500 sounds are harder to shift at those prices than they were. but it's only a theory.

you made one other point about deals being done secretly which no-one knows about - i'd say a lot of those deals are haggles and no-one haggles upwards. i don't buy very often from dealers as i say but i've never had problems getting things cheaper when i've asked.

I agree, this is a 50 quid record. But people still pay over the top prices because they don't have the patience to wait for a copy to come along at the right price, or in many cases don't go to alnighters where the records are easier to come by. For many, ebay is their main source for buying vinyl and a lot of these buyers have more money than sense!

We are in a recession like it or not! and IMO the only reason for the massive prices hikes over the last few years were down to public lending i.e credit cards, or people had savings and see it as a nest egg to 'invest' in records, morgage payed off, or downsized and had some spare cash in the house price boom (which also inturn is dropping!!) like you say Dan its simple economic's, wonder how many people have maxed out credit cards due to buying up records, Im guilty of it too i had a card and banged out 2k worth of vinyl soon as i got it some years ago and have never trusted myself with one since. I'll bet my bottom dollar that that is the case with many!

tell you something else, anglo suddenly started sending me lists out of nowhere, craig moerer's print catalogue arrived out of the blue this week and i've not had one of them for donkeys' years and lots of dealers are doing special offers, cheapies sales etc.

i don't expect to see tim brown on a bike any day soon but it's another pointer.

(don't mind getting the lists, by the way)

However I think it is a case of just looking around and you can get 45s at prices that don't break the bank.This forum has a lot of 45s at fair prices.

I got Quintessents other night on Ebay for £126. OK it was only "VG clean" but I've bought off guy before and label looked fine from picture. I thought I'd have to pay a lot more than that to get a copy. I guess that's due to it's lack of exposure.

I dont think any market cant support the prices that have been payed over the last few years indefinetly. One thing that made me smile recently was the inclusion of The Rayons on two well known dealers lists for £200 & £100 respectivley, in the same week they were at 'but it now' on the bay for around $20.

Somebody earlier on drew an analogy with the housing market, perhaps it's more pertinent than we can imagine.

Could also be alot (well i know it is alot) to do with the net, it brings whats turning up what isn't turning up into the 'public eye' rather than being a sort of 'closed shop' sort of thing, suppose you always had the 'grapevine' befor tinternet so you could always find out if you had contacts or be bothered to ask about.

Hi still got the "grapevine" got a tune that is definately "semi-known" ...BUT the GUYS over in the USA...now know most of the score... 10 cents may =$100...try EBAY...is how shop owners sell..........when in the States ..before ebay got some real bargains......But the "Brits" in the main are the true collectors IMHO..ATB Stevie Z

prices are falling but there will always be records that go for silly money when they are unique people say only seen it once so need to buy now and at some silly price.
