I was there that night and agree it was a totally bad call to play it, completely the wrong tempo, but Istill think it's a beautiful record ! Having said that I did dance to it but they could have played the blue danube and Id have tried to stomp to it - I was that smashed ! ahem, nothing to be proud of of course !

See, I said some people would dance to it whatever. Being smashed tends to have that effect : )

Mind you I think your backflip into the splits was a bit OTT : )

I think the more relevant point is Nina Simone MBJCFM is barely Jazz!

 

I can't remember it ever being played there mind, so shows what I know, that old saying if you remember it you weren't there possibly

I struggle with anything that hasn't got a melody line so that puts quite a bit of jazz off-limits for me. 

 

But someone who is definitely on limits is the prodigiously talented Oscar Peterson (RIP).

Nina Simone....I have it and have played it at every wedding/disco/party I can recall early evening/afternoon reception time....must play tune really....same as 'I just wanna make lurrrrve to you' Etta James which i;ve got away with later in the evening at party's....same kinda tune/genre for me! But....I would never have played Nina or Etta at a nighter..........but Fallin....Connie Francis......i'd dance too on any dance floor and would have spun it at my peak in the 90's at any venue I frequented......before it got famous on the ad....and would have had it away....I reckon!x

 

Jazz? Like Pete....I struggle to get excited about it....or the type that Jazz shows play that I see when flippin! I did watch a documentary a few months back about Etta James which followed her in her later years doing concerts......I thought she was just brilliant every song. Dunno if it was Jazz......cos I really don;t know what Jazz is....I like Nina.....but think I don't like Jazz.....! I suppose it's like Northern....there's pop and there's hard core! Nina I put in the pop Jazz perhaps....and I bought it?!x

MBJCFM is probably the epitome of a popular jazz song ...  "barely jazz"??

 

As I've said previously it was played on numerous nights and I remember the floor being busy. Actually it's usually a case of - if you can  remember it you were there. That actually makes more sense. Unless of course you're engaged in some clever little word play which isn't really clever to anyone who really is clever.

Looking a this playlist its noticeable how about three-quarters of it (rough estimate) was played over and over in the main room through 1980-81. On Friday Oldies and also on Saturday oldie spots in the main room.

Some trivia for you. Lenny Curtis ( aka Jimmy Mack Harrison)is married to Darlene. She is a sister of one of the Tams. There you go FREE info.

Nina Simone was definitely a West Hampstead, early 100 Club tune, where it most definitely fit in with other left field stuff R&B and Jazz influenced stuff. Hearing it transplanted to a more Northern event like the Fleet allniter was odd though.
