do you have or know of 45 records that play at 33 ???

I have a 45 I cant even give a listen to @ 45 , but when played @ 33 the track seems to be muh better ...

How to know if it is supposed to be played at 45 or 33 ( nothing on the label )

All of my 45s play at 33...

I know a guy who makes tapes of records at the wrong speed - you ever tried listening to girl groups at 33? They all sound like male vocals, albeit with slightly gay subject material.

Try it with The Angels "My Boyfriend's Back" - bit scary, really!

Most Brazilian '45's from before about 1975 actually play at 33, I've got quite a few now and not one is a 45 in the true sense of the word....

Slighty connected with thsi but not totally, back in the day Chris Hill used to play Herb Alpert's US 33 1/3 12 inch of "Rise" at 45, and pack the floor with it. I might be wrong about this, but i have a feeling that when A & M issued it here due to its popularity among funkateers, they pressed the slow 'regular' version at 45, thinking that's what people wanted - and, of course, other DJs couldn't get the same effect unless they kept buying the import.

EMI - well, Capitol actually - also issued Eddie Henderson's "Cyclops" on a 45 that was the actually the slow version, as issued on the US LP, played at 45 speed, again due to its popluarity in the funkateer clubs. At least, they did it as a promo single, I'm sure there must have been a commercial 12 inch that did the same thing...

I've got a theory about why the Argentinians play there 7" records at 33.3rpm....

Many Jukeboxes (Seeburg in particular) played selections at 33.3 (Hence the 'Little LPs'/Motown EPs and U.S Jukebox 33s)... when the record companies realised that they were pressing up records for a small section of the U.S. market they probably decided that they could streamline their operations and only cut 7" at 45rpm - If this was the case there will have been tons of Jukeboxes in the U.S that were now defunkt...

I can imagine the tooling and any stock of theses Jukeboxes being passed off onto the nearest 'third world' country by U.S manufacturers.

If your an Argentine record company pressing up 33.3 rpms to supply to Bars, Pool Halls and the like, why bother pressing up 45s?

Dansettes, Sterograms and Gramaphones all play 33.3rpms so you're not losing any customers by not cutting 45s.

I know that several so-called "Disco singles" were pressed by Columbia Records, shortly prior to the introduction of the 45rpm 12" Disc in mid-1976. I still have a copy of Philly Devotions "Hurt So Bad" in this format, and used to own a couple more, one being Bobby Franklin's "Motha's Love". They enabled full length versions of the song to fit onto 7" discs for the benefit of radio DJs (presumably)

The emergent 12" discs quickly replaced them however, as they enabled records to be played louder in discotheques, with minimum distortion, due to wider spaced grooves. As far as I know these particular singles were not released commercially (at 33rpm), being issued in regular, 45 rpm format. Incidently, I once had a 12" disc on US Buddah where the B-Side played BACKWARDS, from the label out! (really!) and Buddah UK misguidedly issued two double-album sets in 1979 (by Aquarian Dream and Norman Conners) that played at 45rpm, presumably to encourage spins from discotheque DJs otherwise too lazy to change turntable speed!

and also has a small hole as well.

Yeah mate had a Brazilian Human Beinz that was a 33.

Remember buying Roberta Kelly "Troublemaker" as a new release UK single and much to the annoyance of my old mate Steve Plimmer (who'd just forked out for the import LP) it was the full LP version at 33rpm.

Also have a couple of those Columbia solid centre long version things. Picked up a nice Carla Thomas 60's solid centre juke box EP 33 the other day too.

I was saying in simmilar thread that it's common in south american issues. My dad collects tango and he has a few of 7" at33 1/3 RPM. Also the 7" for It's A Small World After All (yes, the Disneyland track) plays at 33 1/3.

The Only Mexican edition I have on 33 is the Shaft OST EP with pic sleeve, the single without the p/s plays at 45...

i have the old mecca classic Fay Hauser's "Reaching Out For Happiness" promo 7" single on Sattelite Music International from early1976, whte promo disco mix at seven mins plus,small hole 33rpm, have never seen another copy

I have a vague recollection seeing the O'Jays "I Love Music" in that format, as well. Did you say that on another posting too?

this sounds like New Beat, the Belgian movement from the early nineties where DJ Fat Ronny accidently played 'Flesh' by A Split Second at the wrong speed and created a musical revolution by doing so...

But before New Beat, playing some 45's at 33 was already common practice with DJ's playing Popcorn music; play Perry Como's 45 'Glendora' at 33 +8 and hear how the breaknecking speed of the original becomes very danceable, the voice gets a 'negroid' feel, the horns are sexy and most of all; you can hear the bass! Another tune that gets better when slowed down, although not that drastically is 'Coming home baby' by Mel Torme; try it at 33 -4 and see for yourself...

I sold one in a pack last year- Lots of them on gemm a few on ebay as well and most of the shops in new york had copies as well.

those currently on gemm are stock copies and there arnt any on ebay,i do search this on ebay as a friend has asked me to look for the longer version, you dont even see many stock copies of this anymore always 'you bring the sun in the morning@ or the 79 reachin out for happiness 12", not saying its rare or anything you just dont see them much

Yes I've got the Deniece Williams/Emotions one too, I forgot about that! But would rather count as an EP than single? Think it was given away as a premium with E,W & Fire "Spirit" LP. I had it autographed by Deniece Williams in 1977 (by the way, I never even knew that "Free" came out on US 12" until a couple of years ago!)

I'd have bought the O'Jays 7/33 too as it would have gone into my "Mecca" collection! (ditto Archie Bell & Drells)

As it was released at about the same time, now I'm wondering if Dee Dee Sharp's longer version of "I'm Happy 'Bout The Whole Thing" came out on 33rpm single?? (Wow!)

yes i have 45`s that play at 33 the no prisoner 7" been one that springs to mind the jungilists used to play nu-yorican souls nervous track at 45 sounds terrible though.

i play mica paris "carefree" off the blackbird lp at 45 it sounds like esther phillips with a rocking groove sounds great to my ears.

Have just remembered another 33rpm 7" I own ie., full-length version of "Many Stops Along The Way" by Joe Sample on US ABC (white label, vinyl promo only) with samples from "Rainbow Seeker" album on flip entitled "Sample Of Sample". Most likely given away to promote the album in 1978. (Not particularly rare, just nice to have!)

Remember having the OJays "I Love Music" On a double sided demo that played 45 on one side with a 6 minute version at 33 on the other,also a similar Ace Spectrum"Keep Holding On"
