Recently whilst propping up the bar at a local soul nite, a dj(?) played a track by young Lisa. As much as I like her voice and do confess to owning a cd of hers I'm not sure that it constitutes Soul does it? Dance music maybe. To top it all whilst out doing the crimbo shopping I found a cd alledgedly of the rare soul variety compiled by someone who really should know better with said track on!! Has it come to this? I mean seriously, we've all got records at home which we'd love to hear out but never do, I mean when was the last time you heard an Esquires or Artistics tune played at a soul nite??

Agreed, particularly about Lisa Stansfield, but I wouldn't confuse those types of records with modern soul. They normally wouldn't get played in modern rooms at all. I find it strange that some northern dj's have latched onto them.

Lulu actually recorded at Muscle Shoals in 1970, her version of "Feeling Allright" is brilliant, so if the Muscle Shoals Sound outfit wanted to record with her then that is good enough for me.......

Must admit that I liked Lulu's voice as soon as I heard her sing when she was 16. To me she had more Soul than other white artists like Janis Joplin. A much more natural, less copying Otis, voice.

It got played last nite & as far as I could see everybody seemed to be loving it.

Sure if you analyise it ur gonna find some fault with it. Particularly if you don't like modern soul!

Looking back to Wigan days (yawn!) sometimes we danced to a right load of old crap. Did we pontificate on the relative pedigree of certain records..........

or did we just get out there on the dance floor and have a good time?

Do I regret having a good time? Of course not.

I'm not a huge fan of the lisa Stansfeild track, but I don't dislike it either. It's a good dance record, so is Kenny Thomas and so is Gayle Adams.

Makes me larf tho the way people think some of the hardcore northern stuff is soul when in fact its just not very good whether a black man or a white man - or woman is singing it.

Fact is, the British are making better soul/dance records than the Yanks in the main these days. Lemar for instance is great.

I think most people are on Lisa Stanfields case 'cos everybody knows she's white & from Rochdale. Its a form of inverted snobbery.

I certainly wouldn't advocate over playing the record - particularly with the London rare soul mafia around! But in the right place on the right night it will add to most peoples enjoyment. Certainly did for me on news years eve.

Mrs Soulsmith also likes it.
