Interestingly Ernie Terrell was the WBA World Heavyweight Champion in 1965/66 and is the elder brother of Jean Terrell of the Supremes.

Lost it to Ali in the infamous "Uncle Tom" fight after Terrell called him "Clay"

Yep.

Oh I didnt know that all the years I had the record!! :(

a couple of other soulful sportsmen - Rosey Grier (American football), Arthur Lee Maye (baseball), and plenty of ex-boxers in music - Jackie Wilson, Lee Dorsey, Champion Jack Dupree, Prince Buster, probably hundreds

Never put together the title and the artist then? :(

You can't always tell Steve, I got a nice 45 by Joe Brown this weekend and it sure wasn't the cheeky cockney with the Bruvvers.

Saw Smokin Joe last year in November just before the 1st anniversary do we held at the venue. Apparently he comes and stays there when he is attending boxing galas in the area. small world really.

If I'm not mistaken it was a remake of a version by New Censation on Pride, written and produced by Van McCoy.

It was the first time that the World Heavyweight title had been split between the WBC and WBA. Muhammad Ali was stripped of the title because he had evaded the draft to go to Vietnam. Ernie Terrell refused to call him by his adopted Muslim name in an effort to force a showdown and when the contest finally happened it was a one-sided affair. For 15 rounds Ali taunted him saying "What's My Name" and utterly outboxed him.

Cassius Clay (as he was then) recorded a version of Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me'.

Yeah right on Jordi! And I got one by the Pretenders but it sure wasn't Chrissie Hind on lead vocals :P

No offence, but might have been a strange title for a record, if he wasn`t :P:D

Yeh, i suppose it was a bit 'derrr' of me!

Ali kept him on his feet for the duration of the fight, to punish and humiliate Terrell. Floyd Patterson had similar treatment for the same thing.

During a very half-hearted record hunt in LA in 1993, I came within a cat's whisker's breadth of buying this. For the novelty value, you understand. Alas, common sense prevaled and I've always regretted it. But not as much as I regret passing up the chance to buy up an all-singing, all-dancing Andy Gibb figurine from an NYC record/junk shop the next year. Not very skilled at this record-buying lark, am I? :D
