Sorry Hammie, it WAS manufactured for the scene, the 1979 Destiny release is nothing to do with the 1968 MGM release except they used the name John Drevars (not even John Drevars Expression), it was recorded specifically to cash in on the fact they were playing the MGM version. So there.

Actually I am with Nusha Love Hustle did sound quite good (for Tony Hatch) in it's day until we got bored with it on it's fifth playing at the Casino every night.

It may not be 'Northern' but KENNY LYNCH - MOVIN' AWAY (HMV 1967) has had more than it's fair share of spins on the 70's/Crossover scene!

Fairly good (not great) record imvho although i've never been keen on the Righteous Bros style break in the middle of it!

Always had a soft spot for Keanya Collins too, although listening to that now it sounds more Chicago Crossover than Northern.....and it was played 15 years before the term was invented!

Rest are shite imvho tho

No, the two sound nothing like each other really, the original is actually not too bad. Kev Roberts just got someone in to do a vocal and called him John Drevars.

Sarcasm aside, I would be interested to know what the redeeming qualities of the Keanya Collins record are. The vocals are weak, there's no beat and the lyrics are pathetic. The strings are nice, does that make it a classic or something?

Ok Pete, whilst Keanya Collin's voice isn't up there with Linda Jones, she can certainly hold a note or two, when she belts out "....you're something else, I can't stand..." then you know she 's got a talent. The production is subtle and classy, and not untypical of the early 70's Chicago soul of the time (Lovelites etc.) from guys like Johnny Cameron, Carl Davis, Willie Henderson...and of course it's got a beat, so I won't debate that, and as for the lyrics, they're no Purlitzer prize winner, but they tell a simple story over a nice enough melody, nothing too cheesey.

I didn't put it in a list of pop tunes, just a list of what I considered to be the 50 worst northern records issued in the UK, of which this is one. Christ knows how I missed the Carstairs, probably didn't realise it got reissued by Inferno.

When I went to the Casino for the first time in february 1975, Love Bandit was at its height & it was a big record.

I didn't know what to make of it, being more into things like the Velvet Satins, but it was certainly a big sound.

Jem Rice, a geezer from Peterborough, bought a copy of it that night & was fondling it lovingly on the train all the way back home. My memory could be playing tricks on me of course. Was that a Mecca thing that Winstanley gave the nod of approval to?

Also saw a UK Northern Soul CD containing tracks by (I think) David Essex and The Brotherhood of man plus other highly dubious names - anyone know of it?

Born A Loser was never released in the UK Tone so it doesn't qualify. Anyway, it'd never be in any worst lists that I do, I love it

You're quite right in that it wasn't released in the UK, but given the quality of some of the old crap that was being put out by UK companies in the name of 'Northern' during the mid 70s, I can be forgiven for thinking otherwise...

I promise I will have a look and report back mate but just for now, how rare is that Lloyd Charmers record I've got on ebay as a buy it now? I've never seen it before ("Time Is Getting Hard" blue Coxsone 7023) I put 75 on it but saw on popsike one went for £256!!

When I first met the recently-deceased, legendary Studio 1 collector Pete Roberts ("Studio Pete") it was the only title that he didn't have on UK Coxsone. I think it's odd that it's so rare, it must have been a goodish seller as I can remember it being played on Radio Caroline when it was a new release -so someone, somewhere must have been promoting it!

Can't believe that anyone in the world with an ounce of taste couldn't like Kenny Lynch's "Moving Away" - I sincerely hope that your hatred of of it doesn't extend to Ken Boothe's majesterial version!

I don't like Ken Boothe's version either. Honest truth is, there are very few Studio One records that I like compared to Treasure Isle's output over the same period. They all sound the same! And practically anything after 1969 I find unlistenable. Anyway I've got another question:

I have a Busters All Stars record on ebay. OK this one has got me confused. The number is BB 11, which of course is very early circa 1961 and the A side is KEITH & ENID - SEND ME. So far so good. However, this one was issued in 1965. The B side is supposed to be TRENTON SPENCE - WE KNOW WE ARE IN LOVE yet this one is called WE'RE IN LOVE, an instrumental, and it sounds to me to be much later than 1961 and it sounds like THE SKATALITES to me. There's a sound clip on the ebay listings if anyone knows.

Don Ray's a country artist, the record was made in Nashville, it has no more or less to do with Soul Music than "The Joker Went Wild" and it isn't even half as good a Pop record as that IMO...

...apart from that it's alright

BTW for Pete, I had a listen to your BB11 - how strange! I've never ever seen a copy pressed as late as that (1965ish) either. I've sent the listing to a couple of reggae collector pals to see if they know anything about it. Pretty decent tune it is too and, as you say, definitely by at least some of the musicians who were also in the Skatalites rather than by "Trenton Spence And His Group". Will let you know if I get anywhere with my enquiries....
