My "time machine track" is Terri Wells - I'll Be Around. It transports me instantly to the summer of 1984 when I was just about to join the Army. I was courting my first wife and smashing her back doors in every chance I got mega year, mega mega track!!

Terri Wells - I'll Be Around was on a duke box in Hull Kingston General Hospital Social Club and I nearly put my wages in listening to this superb version of a soul classic.

That period, 84-86 was possibly the last bastion of our music as such I feel.

My "time machine track" is Terri Wells - I'll Be Around. It transports me instantly to the summer of 1984 when I was just about to join the Army. I was courting my first wife and smashing her back doors in every chance I got mega year, mega mega track!!

Slightly off topic, but similar, being in the States puts a slightly different twist on it. You don't get to hear much quality rare vinyl at do's. So 3 or 4 years ago, Tommy Potts arranged a night in Los Ageles and his dad came over and did a spot (as many know, his dad has some quality) It occurred to me that during in the evening, while i was dancing my head off (this was 2007ish) the last time i'd danced to some these choons was at Wigan!!! choons like The Nomads, Herb Ward too many to mention, it was surreal. My time capsule.

It's a tough choice but the track that still makes my bones ache with nostalgia is Detroit Emeralds 'Feel the need in me'. Anyone remember Pan's People dancing to it on TOTP wearing maxi skirts, platform shoes and crocheted berets back in 1973'ish? The platforms that Pans People wore had a cherry motif on them and I pestered the life out of my mum to get them for me. So the next day we went shopping and I had to guess what colour they were as we only had a B&W telly - so I opted for dusty blue suede Happy days (and twisted ankles)

mine is the john drevars-the closer she gets.derick allen playing it at basford miners welfare(nottingham) behind the decks that said-hot wax-flames and everything in the late 70's.

I have lots of time machine tracks that instantly tranport me back to youth club days or long ago venues,but one track really delivers a time machine punch to me everytime i hear it.The track is NO ONE COULD LOVE YOU MORE--GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS.First heard this played by Roger Banks at the Cleethorpes Winter Gardens easter 1997.A stunning track that shot the hairs on the back of my neck straight into overdrive.On the way back home on the M180 the Halle Bop comet was lighting up the sky,and a week later my only Daughter Jessica was born

OMG that's a proper time machine track for me too, but for all the wrong reasons. May 84, I was 16, on a first date, soul night at the Rose & Crown in Wandsworth - loved that tune and danced to it before leaving on the back of his lammy, along with my best friend Steph on the back of our friend Jimo's. On the way home I turned round to see if they were following, only to see a car run a red light and smash into them broadside. Broke their legs but they survived thank God. Can't hear that record without seeing it over and over in my head. Not keen on riding pillion even to this day.

On a happier note, the Supremes' Stormy takes me straight back to the Spring of 2000 and my first weekend with Justin, now my husband. If there is such thing as a perfect weekend, that was it - sun, soul, sex & Stormy . On the way home from a fabulous day in Brighton, he kept replaying that track over and over in the car for an hour because he loved it. I remember floating into work on the Monday morning, the girls asking how the weekend went, and me telling them to get down the hat shop...

I also have very fond memories about that track...along with the 1st ever record i bought ....Backstabbers by the O'Jays in '73 when i was the tender age of 12...that whole era and the TSOP sounds were just fantastic for some of us fledgings then...Delxxxx

76 massive in Scarboro it was like an anthem for 4 Seasons. Hot days ...even hotter nights. Just totally mental times............Sex, Drugs and NORTHERN SOUL. There are a few members on here that remember the Scarboro scene well. Harry, Tony C Ken???

What's your "Time Machine Track" and where does it take you?...

I only wish there were just the ONE! My problem is that almost every damned record I own seem to evoke the moment that I first heard them. For example, whenever I hear "Temptation Is Calling My Name" I can almost feel the chill September air on my skin and the whiff of fog in the air (true) Play "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" by the Detroit Spinners and I remember a particular girl's perfume ('Charlie') mingled with the smell of her brand new suede coat the day we got back together... and don't get me started on Al Green!

On the plus side, it's a kind of musical diary of people and events in my head that helps me remember the fun times. I always imagined it was the same for everyone, but it appears not.

However, "oldies" nights may lead to extreme sensory overload, in which case I usually find that getting drunk helps a bit...

You're Ready Now at the age of 13 at Carlton Club in Whalley Range in 1971.

I had never seen dancing like that before. I have this vision of me standing, slack-jawed with astonishment at the edge of the dancefloor. No change to nowadays really except I'm now usually gasping for breath instead.

Like Mel. So many. To name but two:

Suspicion takes me back to the first time Guy played it at Stafford.

My Dearly Beloved, takes me to the Leicester Oddfellows and a mate who died, singing it as we watched from the edge of the dance floor. he looked almost nervous as he was so wrapped in the moment. If I shut my eyes while its playing I can still see Paul. It often makes me well up, but I wouldnt be without that link for the whole world.

Boogaloo Party.........The Flamingos....A girl I used to go with when I was about 14. Local school disco. I can still smell the place. As soon as I heard it, it was like WTF IS this? Still love it to bits now all these years later.

I've got loads, but my best one would be Darryl Banks - Open the door to your Heart - or Homer Banks 60 Minutes of your Love, can remember that being placed at Southampton Top Rank when all the Southampton Football players used to go there, had a crush of Mick Channon at the time!!

If I've had a drink and this comes on I find it very difficult not to get up!

I used to be relief DJ for a number of clubs in Manchester including the Millionaire club but before Iused to do my rounds giving the resident DJs abreak I used to DJ a u16s club in Farnworth called JIGSAW.

The track that lends a Time machine was - The matta baby - do the Pearl Girl as it was requested about 20 times a night - I could have just left it on all night and the kids would have been happy!

One night when the Taxi came to take me to manchester - I was rushing so much I left the bloody record on the deck only to remember half way to Manchester and told the taxi to turn around which he duly did.

The barmaid had picked it up and was looking at it and said"Whats this bloody strange music you play Steve" So I told her about Northern soul and how much we pay for the records. Suffice to say she said she would like to come to Wigan one night and It was an oldies night- as she didnt believe me. She was Gobsmacked at how much I sold 3 or 4 records for that night - The funny thing about her was - If you look at the Wigan casino story cds you see 2 people leaning on the Concrete bin (Thats us) just before we went inside.

So the Matta baby has lots of memories for me!

P.S. She only went the once

and the night I left the matta baby I got into trouble for being late and for anyone who knows of working for the QSG you were never late!
