Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
- Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
Some good points there Adam, albeit a bit of a depressing conclusion. I think the problem I have with your conclusion is that it is from a UK only standpoint. Wigan Casino probably means fu@k all to anyone who didn't go, particularly people from other countries than the UK. The scene has now moved from being a UK only 'club' to being appreciated (no less fanatically) in lots of other places around the world. Black American (for the most part Black) is loved and danced to by many different people all around the world. This to me is the biggest factor that makes me feel positive about things, because as anyone can see, the playlists that get shown on the internet from DJ's that aren't from the UK are often the most interesting. Underplayed, quality 60's, new discoveries, 70's stuff to die for (not the 'giffer' 70's plodders that usually get played over here in the UK). I always feel a bit depressed when I read many UK (and funnily enough Australian) playlists, it's as if nothing has changed or grown up for the last 30 years, it's as if for the last 30 years certain DJ's have only been interested in collecting all the expensive tunes they wish they could have afforded back in the 70's. I don't think I've read a single playlist in all the Manifesto magazines (not the Manifesto nights mentioned in Adam's post) that would make me want to go over to an Australian soul event as they seem totally based on a time period 20 - 30 yrs ago in the UK. Apologies here to the people in Australia who are into stuff other than the tried and tested UK Northern, and I know that there are a few who are as keen as ever to dig out the fresh stuff. I think in the end, the worldwide appreciation of soul music and the head start we in the UK have in having imported a large percentage of the good stuff (although by no means all, particularly the 70's stuff) will ensure that true to the UK spirit, we will rise up and reclaim the scene in the way it originally was, by appreciating killer tunes by either dancing to them or talking about them and creating a demand for them, long after the last ageing crap dancer has finished moaning about how the Carstairs ruined the Northern scene. Sounds like one of those dodgy Italians that lots of dealers in the US won't touch. Hope you sort it Dave. Jordi- Darrell Banks/ronnie Mccain £30/£50
If you're going without sleep over the Ronnie McCain I suggest you dream about paying nearer £100, then you might wake up and someone may have one for sale. Jordi- Sonny Knight Quartette "groove Is On" Celebrity

Superb mate!! Brightened my morning at work up no end. Jordi- Barcelona ,any Soul/funk/mod Nights?
You won't find a better soul night Geoff than this. Me and Dave played there in June and we had a ball. The venue is pure class. Fantastic across the board music policy and tons of serious tasty stuff played, with a great up for it crowd. Edu and Christina who run the night are top, top people also. I wish I could be over there. Have a good 'un. Jordi- Edee - Make It Last

I agree with you Mart, lots of what we like were local neighbourhood 'hits', big in the local dancehalls, a bit like Jamaica, although they didn't get the national exposure due to many different reasons not least being good distribution deals, dishonest deals/management, or the fact that most people tend to go with what's currently 'hot', meant that things probably didn't last too long before the next dance craze took over. When you've got talent spilling over like black America had in the 60's and 70's (and still does), it was probably less likely that people would hark back to halcyon times of 'good' music, but more likely try and be part of the next 'hot' style. Get the 45, it's also got the other good track on the lp on the flip. Jordi- Hale To The Best Record On Ebay
I've just had another listen and perhaps I was a bit harsh in my first post. I think what SolidSoul has said is true, the production is good and exciting and would sound big played out, but the Everly Bros style vocals just make me cringe still and I know if I heard it out that would be the reason I wouldn't like it. Good job we're not all after the same things! Jordi- One For Sale
I can't believe you're selling this Ted! Bargain price as well. Jordi- Prices?
About £40 ish on the Skip Mahony? Jordi- Hale To The Best Record On Ebay

Bollox . Another one I missed when I had the chance. I was offered one about 5 years ago for about $400 from the elusive Kevin in Toronto. I thought it was good but not what I wanted to spend that kind of money on then. Wish I'd bought it now! Jordi- Jazz
Don't know the lp Toaster, but if Gilles Peterson has compiled it there must be some good stuff on it. To ask if you like Jazz in general, is too narrow a question I think. Too much of soul and Northern Soul is touched by Jazz for anyone to say they don't like it. It's deep into the music that we all love on here, more obviously on some stuff than others, but tracks like Royal Esquires, Cal T. Jader, Gil Scot-Heron, Celeste Hardy, right down to your 'Heartache souvenirs' all have jazz stylings or chords. The funk brothers were jazz musicians so a lot of the Motown stuff had Jazz influences. I think a lot of people think of Jazz as 'free form 'Jazz, where it might sound as if 2 or 3 tunes are being played at the same time, but it is actually America's finest art form and without it soul music would be a lot poorer. Kev, have you read the thread fella? Styrene, stuck on labels with stamp in runout and brilliant sound quality = ORIG. Vinyl with dinked centre of moulded label and shit low cut sound = BOOT. Unless there's a brilliant sound, vinyl, orig stamped press somewhere that no-one has come up with yet. Jordi- Timothy Wilson - I Must Love You
Blake me old mate, that Sunday morning at Yarmouth in the record bar as you opened that door and virtually bashed into me with your record box, thus giving me first opportunity to delve, still brings a little smile to my face. To be fair, I wasn't sure whether it was orig or not at the time even though I had the dodgy sound vinyl boot already, it was Dave Welding who told me it was kosher afterwards. Baz, it went for $769 on ebay. Jordi- Rising Sun-Miami Bump (Sri Records)
Hi Nev, I think Craig Meoerer originally had these at about $275. A couple have gone through ebay cheaply, but I would have thought about £100+ should be about right. Jordi- Timothy Wilson - I Must Love You
Ken, I've had both. I still have my styrene original and I sold my boot the minute I got my styrene copy. Those scans on popsike are the styrene ones apart from the second one which is the vinyl boot and has a pronounced dip / ring in the middle of the label. The boot isn't common and nor is the original, so I suppose not too many people get to compare them both. What is undeniable though is the sound difference. Jordi- Timothy Wilson - I Must Love You
Yes, orig is styrene, boot is vinyl but it's a dreadful recording on the boot and a very low cut press so it sounds shit. The styrene orig sounds nice and loud and is a great recording and press. Jordi - Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
