What'S Your 'Jewel In The Crown?'
Hi Len No jewel from me but this reminds me of a tape I had about 20 years ago, loads of great tracks on there but no listing. Like you I slowly managed to put titles and artists to tunes but one track alluded me. I counted on the fact it was called I Want to Thank You (or something similar) - do you know how many records there are called Thank You? Fecking hundreds - I know cause I listened to most of them! Anyway, fast forward 15 years (found out what the record was by now btw, took about 2 years though) had a video of Shotts anniversary here, had it years and was watching it again one day when the camera zoomed in on the decks while Andy Whitmore was DJing and the next record he played was the one I'd been looking for. Couldn't believe it cause the video was made before the tape. The record was Matt Brown - Thank You Baby - Jar Val. Phew!

Mr Manships Auction Results 27-6-2012
Have to say I don't ever remember seeing a copy of Charles Brandy for sale (not saying there hasn't been one of course). 2 fantastic sides and up there as one of the records I have wanted most since I started on this road. Absolute bargain!!

Exactly why one man's upfront is another man's y-front I didn't know every record on the list either but I knew a fair few and hand on heart there were some on there I didn't care for. That wouldn't stop me going to a venue though, I am but one in a room full so certainly don't expect the music to be tailored to suit my taste. The 'funky edge' is not for me though (generally speaking), on the whole it's just not good enough (for me). I will keep listening though, a good record is a good record regardless of when it was made or what pigeon hole it comes from.

Playlists, Or The Lack Of Them
Who decides if a DJ is worth his salt? Would that be the said DJ? It has never been about us (punters / DJ's / whoever) and it never will be!

Popsike Charging?
Yes, had this a few years ago when I was doing some research for a uni project. I think it re-sets itself every day

The Prestatyn Soul Weekender Returns
I absolutely love live acts and will certainly miss the variety that used to be on offer every year. Not for everyone of course but it was for me. I also love watching the wildlife in the foyer which will no doubt increase

How Long Does It Take To 'really' Know The Width/depth Of The Soul Genre?
I always picture people being knocked over backwards as his voice hits them it's that powerful! Incredible vocals.

Our side is the only side that seems bothered. Go figure! I've always said you can't argue with people that aren't as passionate as you are or feel as strongly as you do, there's no way you can win. Like you say, it will go on ... and on ... and on ... and on ...

All well and good but do we really want a scene without oldies? I certainly don't! They are all oldies at the end of the day and just because you / me / the person next to us may know them it doesn't necessarily follow that everyone does. Until every single person knows every single record it is impossible to say something is truly unknown surely? People embark and alight this soul journey at different stages, there is no right or wrong here (apart from ovo of course lol)

There's a great clip of the last record here Peter, complete with impending riot when it finishes. Fantastic

Porgy & Monarchs That Girl
Wow. This is a record that was around when I started going in the early / mid 80s so I just assumed it had been played for years already. Always learning!

Rotations On Debrossard, Si-Berians On Ricardo, Few More
Totally agree. I just thought if it was an issue on one internet site it would be the same issue on another. I'm just a bit more clumsy in my approach
-
Rotations On Debrossard, Si-Berians On Ricardo, Few More
Really don't see what the issue is with it already being public knowledge on facebook (apparently cos I don't go there)
-
Rotations On Debrossard, Si-Berians On Ricardo, Few More
Right, at least now people know the history behind the record. Apologies for my bluntness but I can't be doing with all this secrecy stuff. If there's something to say, say it
-
Rotations On Debrossard, Si-Berians On Ricardo, Few More
Why don't you tell those on here that don't do facebook what the issue is. He is selling stuff on here too so please share!

Moaning About High Prices
When I was in Seattle a few years ago we went to this record shop and while there was nothing of real note in there, there were a couple of bits I wanted. Now let me tell you, they were not sleeved and while they played ok, they were in pretty bad shape over all. Anyway, I took them to the counter where the guy proceeded to slowly produce Manship's guide from under the counter (like it was his secret weapon) and check the values. He then went on to ask for the full amount stated in the book. Did I say the records looked like they had been skated on? Fair to say all of us left without buying anything.

Symposium on Soul Music and Community - Manchester 29th June 2012
No idea where you get this from as Chalky quite clearly posted at the time of the last one that he had recorded the talks and that he had posted them up for people to listen to. Maybe once again his words will fall on blind eyes!

Do they have an hour of Northern like you have an hour of modern? Serious question, I never go to modern events.

Symposium on Soul Music and Community - Manchester 29th June 2012
Ady did give a talk at the last one actually This isn't about 'us', it is their take on the scene as part of a more general, social and cult thing. It was very interesting but not entirely accurate in my view, apart from Lucy Gibson. Might go again if I'm not doing anything.

Like Chalky said, a most enjoyable and interesting afternoon. Lucy Gibson's talk was the one I enjoyed the most. Out of all of them she was the one that I thought understood and 'got' what the scene is all about. Great bit at the end where they welcomed our questions and thoughts too. Not at all the cringe fest I was expecting. Proper enjoyed it.
