I was there that night too. It was my first ever all nighter up north (well up north for me ). Wasn't Tommy Hunt there too? I got very pissed on Caffreys but had a cracking time. I ended up swapping my wife's 45 for a Goldmine CD as I hadn't see the full range before. I had given up listening to northern soul for 10 years before that but it got me going again.

Sounds about right. It's not hard and was very popular at the time. Excellent record I never tire of hearing

Randy's version is the worst of the lot imo. You can't be Stevie's version - it's his song after all. What with having Betty Wright, Eddie Levert & Michael Jackson on backing vocals, it's an absolute winner!

When Berry Gordy set up Motown, the idea was not to make black music but music to appeal to everyone. However, by 1967/68 there was a lot of racial tension (Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, race riots, etc), and Motown decided not to ignore what was going on their own doorsteps and produce records such as Ball of Confusion which provided some social comment. Mick Howard's article above explains it all.

Agreed. Erykah Badu is a great CD (as are all of hers). Lots of excellent new music around - Jonathan Butler, Cool Million, Adriana Evans, Kem, etc, etc

They were a big influnce on me when I first started to buy them as a 14 year old. My fave Lps came out a few years later as I started to appreciate a wider range of sounds. Brainstormers and Winner Takes All were hammered relentlessly in my bedroom. I hadn't heard Two People "Stop Leave My Heart Alone" until I bought Brainstormers and it remains one of my all time faves.

Thoroughly enjoyable night at These Old Shoes. I think each DJ only got about mins each and some had to double up. The quality was consistent all the way through. Its amazing that a small midweek do like this has lasted 4 years but it keeps going from strength to strength. The three residents Jo, Paul and Martin have really got something special going on here. The guests are always good and their styles vary each month. One of my all time favourites. I also love Ann Nesby "You Are My Everything". Loads of great soulful gospel tunes out there from the last ten years too. Israel & The New Breed "Real" and Norman Hutchins "I Really Love You" springs immediately to mind:thumbsup:

I thought the purpose of the record was to promote a car sales business. Only a few were pressed and given away as freebies. Chalky's right. Dave Flynn used to play this regularly at The Dome. Not one of my favourite memories of the place

Yes, he was great. He always is. A true legend and hero in my book. A pity Bobby Womack's brief performance with Gorrilaz was such an anti-climax.
