2 Singles
1. The Newbeats Track, the B Side Too Sweet To Be forgotton was played on the scene and is not too bad. 2. I always preferred the B side "Along Came Pride". Not bad sound actually. As for your albums, the Bob & Earl is excellent in my humble opinion. Sold loads of them at Wigan in 74, go them cheap. Can't comment on the Jackie Wilson as I don't know the tracks. paul

Fashion Victims
I actually had a bowling shirt wiith nothing on the back, and my mum was going to embroider orange "smarties" on the back and the legend, "smartie people are happy people" on it. It never happened. Filon anyone? One thing I never had was the vest with the cartoon on it and "Dragonette", what was that about? Paul

The Trouble With Soul Source
Oops! I stand corrected, and yes that is a better record than the C/U I first listened too. and I do like it. But without listening to it out a few times, I reserve judgement. By the way, when Frank was big, I had started my break from the allnighter scene, so I didn't really know it at Wigan etc. Paul

The Trouble With Soul Source
As someone who doesn't actually go out much any more, and had not heard the Mello Souls, are we talking about the cover up "Hey Girl"? If so it isn't a bad record, and I'm sure it sounds better played out that as a refosoul clip, but IMHO it certainly ain't as good as the record we are also discussing, which I am sick of hearing but still is also IMHO a great "Northern Soul" record. The mello souls is only "fantastic" because it is rare & has a mystique because of it. Paul

What Was The First 12"
I've only ever had one and it was a Junk shop/Carboot find, when I would buy anything that was played. I still have it and here it is I know, you're all envious, and it is apparently quite early as a 76 release(or is that just a 76 production) From the people that brought you Crossroads & neighbours Paul

Anyone Remember A Dancer From Early Casino Days Called
Are you sure you don't mean Caesar(Steve)? He won a couple of the competitions. Used to leave his dog in his van, and then take it for a walk in the middle of the night. The dog was called Tomango and Steve originally was from St Kitts I believe, but was resident in Yorkshire somewhere. Paul

New Soul Series On Bbc4 Starting 2nd Feb
It did come out on 45 and was a small hit and even got into the charts in 1967. This is off a rather scratched album.geno_washington_Michael.mp3 I do like this version. Have not got the hang of the refosoul thing yet. Paul

Lovelace Watkins
Wasn't he in Space 1999 or UFO? Or was he a motorway services outside Bristol? When Lovelace Watkins did the Op Knocks or whatever and had his 15 minute of real fame, soon after I remember possibly in B&S a review of Isaac Hayes singinging "If Loving You Is Wrong" and the reveiwer described it as sounding like "Lovelace Watkins with a cake in his mouth" . I thought it was funny at the time. Paul

Millie Jackson - My Man Is A Sweet Man
Yeh, I remember . At the time I had just moved from Southport to Burscough, and the crowd that went on to that night out were not the usual suspects that I got involved with a bit later on, but Barry & Keith who lived in the Greyhound pub, & a couple of lads from Burscough. Not the future allnighter goers, although Keith & his girlfriend I think only went to Wigan once, to the first anniversay, and are the main people in one of the most used Wigan photos ever. I never got fame like that  . Have you seen the photos in My Gallery, a few Southport & Ormskirk crowd Including Tommy Allinson & Pete Simpson. Paul

Millie Jackson - My Man Is A Sweet Man
Saw her live, by accident just after this was released in '73. A few of us went to Wigan Rugby Club for the soul night(pre allnighter days) I think it was around May time. They Let us pay to get in, but as some of us were under 18(I was 15!) we very quickly got kicked out. Not being down hearted we remembered that Millie Jackson was on at Preston Top Rank, so it was off to the station, I think it was Andy Handley and Possibly Levine DJing as it was an International Soul Club Do, Millie was fantastic, and a good night was had by all, until we were threatened by the local Preston Lot, and chased out. Still a memorable night. And probably my first proper northern Soul Do. Paul

Tunes You Hated, But Love Now
When I used the term disco I think I was being ironic, and was refering to how it sounded at the time to a 17 year old Wigan regular. I became quite a regular at the Mecca during early 75 because I was "grounded" from nighters . I didn't hate the tracks, but preferred the true northern stuff played at the time. Another track you didn't mention from this Mecca era was "Turning My Heartbeat Up" which nowaday appears to be classed as a wigan pop side to a certain extent. What did it for me at the Mecca, although I continued to go occasionally, was when I went for the usual walk downstair to watch the "divs" and the DJ was playing Esther Phillips "What a Difference a Day Makes", which was then played by Levine later on. Rare soul?. Paul
