We have the world's biggest factual database
I must say I got a bit of an ego rub and felt quite proud actually that several people on here considered an old fanzine of mine worthy of reprinting in full, every issue, page for page as PDF files for each and everybody to read and download should they wish. I thank you for all the considerable time and effort you chaps must have put into completing this lengthy task. Nice One Bob. Nice One Sean. Should our pathes ever cross I’ll get the first drinks in. And it got me thinking…..whilst sat in the sunshine yesterday I took the hand brake off my mind and just let it wander about and go into free fall. Bear with me - after several cups of tea I came to the conclusion there was actually no way of calculating the total combined knowledge of soul music by all the members on this forum. No matter how hard I tried it couldn’t be done. How could you ever begin to measure the length, depth and breadth of music recorded within the last 55 years or so? If you could download all that information onto paper can you imagine how big that book would be? What number of pages? The sheer weight of it – what shelf could ever be built to hold it? Between the members of Soul Source we have access to the world’s biggest factual database on all things related to soul music right down to the minute-ist detail imaginable. A library of knowledge so unbelievably vast it would make the US Library Of Congress look like a garden shed. Say you want to know the colour of the shoes worn by the lead drummer on the Pied Piper sessions which yielded all the recorded output for the Imperial label by The O’Jays at the end of 1965…….Hold on, give me a minute please - yeah got that, page 4100000 third paragraph down. Size 8 Brown with hole in left shoe. Next. So bearing that in mind I reckon one of the most important jobs this esteemed forum could do is to work together and compile label listings that have never been done before. Or add to and complete as near as possible label listings that have been touched upon over the years but never fully fleshed out. We can document gaps in the history of the music we love before we fade and it fades. The power of the written word will go on for ever as long as the generations continue. Now you might think bah what a waste of time surely all the multitude of records on all the vast array of labels we collect have long been well documented by now haven’t they? Everything’s out there on the web isn’t it? It’s all been done or has it? So what percentage of label listings do you think - out of all the record labels out there, over all the years – has or have been put together with care and attention? Have I sold you the idea? And your thoughts are? I confess I am currently working on a couple of label listings that I haven’t seen compiled in print before however before I put them forward for additions I’d like members to reply with label listings they’d like to see put together. And the power of forums like this with an uncountable number of eyes and ears in countries across the world is that somebody somewhere might just have seen or got a listing of the very label you’re interested in. To make it achievable it might be best to tackle smaller labels first rather than say something like the complete output of the RCA label from 1960 to whenever…. Your replies and input is required, needed and very much appreciated. I will try mi best to keep up with updates and editing of the various label listings depending of course if sufficient interest is forthcoming. Onwards. Derek x

Lack Of Knowledge, Or Just Deep Pockets ?
'Cos I'm from the north and supposed to be blunt I'd say maybe they can't be arsed and it's not that important to them? Don't forget most of the long time poster/regulars on here are hardcore and I mean proper, proper hardcore. They want to know as much as humanely possible about as many soul records as their memory can stand right down to the minutest detail. On meeting various soul groups and artists over the years they want to know everything about the singers biggest flop records whilst the artistes want to talk about their biggest hits.... They live breathe, eat and swallow soul music 7 days a week, 24 hours a day with the only respite being when they're asleep or on the toilet. They talk down and under price records when buying and do the exact opposite when selling. There's a good chance they possibly might sometime soft lie (when telling loved ones how much they've paid for certain records). They sometimes forget to pay a bill when a long time want suddenly rears its head. They often have records mailed to their place of work so to avoid the tell tale constant stream of postmen knocking on the door. How many records have you bought this month darling? Need I carry on.... Only been collecting 20 years 'bah you're still a nipper they think. On hearing you've only got 500 records in your collection they smile politely whilst thinkin' fcuk me I had that many by the time I was 12. How many times in conversation with non soul people do you get told that "yeah I've got quite a few records at home". Well that to me means 500 minimum. Then you're shocked to find out they've just a carrier bag full of about 20 albums most of them compilations. Many on here are angels flying high above in the clouds watching mere mortals down below just fumbling about with records. I mean despite what we think what percentage of newcomers do you think have actually ever heard of this Soul Source forum? And how many could be bothered to get involved - why would they want to? I bet many find it intimidating - hell even I do. What does that car sticker say - Northern Soul Is A Way Of Life - well it may be to us but it's not to them. It's just a night out having a laugh with their mates. To many on here going out is a near religious experience and that's what drives the passion and seriousness of it. That's precisely what has kept the scene going for the last 50 odd years or so. Without it it would have withered and died like so many other youth cults have done over the years. Some opinions expressed are not those of the writer. All said tongue in cheek with no offence intended. Derek x

Shades Of Soul Issue 3 (December 1984)
Blimey it's the modern world as Shades Of Soul comes on line. Nice one Sean. Makes me chuckle re-reading them again - I didn't half talk some ball bag I blame it on my youth. It's so handy reading them as a PDF file as I ain't got any original copies at all tucked away under mi bed. Not even sure where the masters are these days - had a bad habit of cutting up sections to reuse again as ya do. Onwards, Derek

Derek Pearson & Jonah Bcb Radio 106.6Fm 25.04.15 9-10Pm
Shades Of Soul with Derek Pearson on the Bradford based BCB Radio 106.6FM Saturday 25th April 2015 @ 9-10pm It’s been my pleasure and I’m quite proud to say that over the many years of contributing a variety of soul music shows on radio the common theme amongst my guests was that they were all madly obsessed and passionate about soul music in whatever form it took. Tonight’s guest was chosen specifically because he wasn’t or isn’t a typical dyed in the wool, bonafide, 100% mad collector of all things soulful. He’s cut from a different cloth and I thought the results were very interesting. He chose a selection of tunes that he considered as soul music with a different twist. Jonah I thank you. Sixty minutes of the good groove - fasten your safety belts it could get bumpy. Listen live on www.bcbradio.co.uk/player/ Derek playlists to follow asap......

Show Us Your Great Photos - Pt2
If I told you I’d changed my name to Martin Le-May I’m pretty sure nobody would believe me and I’d be lying if I said I’d taken this outstanding photograph as many will have seen it featured in the national press early last week. It’s not often I gasp when looking at a photograph but this one made do it - out loud as well. I realise I’m bending the rules of this thread somewhat – so how about having a thread on the ‘most amazing photographs you’ve ever seen’ type thing so we can move this magnificent photograph into a more appropriate place. Please delete this post if needs be. Derek http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31711446

World's Wealthiest Dj's
I read an interview somewhere a few months ago where an American radio DJ had some sort of agreement with Chess records to play 16 records an hour by them. Struth you can only play 20-22 records full length in an hour so it didn't leave much air play for anything on other labels did it? No wonder Chess records became so mighty. It was a rough tough world in the sixties. Derek

First Soul Single I Bought
I got into proper soul music quite late on in life compared to many on here - at school aged 16 (circa 1973) I had a brief flirtation with a Nazareth album (‘Razamanaz’) about the same time as me saying to a friend “why do I wanna watch lions and elephants juggling balls and stuff” when dismissing completely ‘Monty Pythons Flying Circus’ which was massive on TV at the time. When I did watch it I was too young to understand it. Soon I’d started to listen and enjoy the various sweet pop soul releases by The Stylistics which were all over the radio at the time. My disco feet were starting to twitch. I recall going to the pub one dinnertime with people from work possibly 1974 ish to celebrate somebody’s birthday or whatever and a girl kept putting this song on the jukebox. I even asked her what it was and the seed was planted. Still sounds exceptionally cool today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onTzLFJ14tA By the time I was late 17 I’d started to drink in town with all the big boys and frequent all those places you were advised not to drink in. One of them was The Ring Bar a mainly black bar underneath a hotel at the top end of town. It was 1975 and I was 18 and this burnt a hole straight through my mind. One Christmas there was the first time I got threatened with a knife for spilling a drink. The bar later got fire bombed by some rough types from Shipley so I’m told. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O78bo0uxf_Y

Kiki Dee - Magic Carpet Ride
Never realised her version was a cover of a Little Anthony song - a quick look at the song writing credits would've pointed me in the right direction. Normally I pick up on this sort of thing but in this case I must've nodded off temporarily. Nice one chaps. A Google search threw up a Refosoul link from Pete Smith from June 2008 and Popsike shows the Ebay sale from March 2008 as mentioned by Pete where the acetate credited to Little Anthony Gourdine sold for a tidy £316. https://www.popsike.com/Little-Anthony-Gourdine-On-A-Magic-Carpet-Ride/330218343808.html (Text from Ebay listing as follows) Little Anthony Gourdine (??) - On A Magic Carpet Ride . Original UK 7" 45rpm "Unreleased" Single Sided Emidisc Acetate. This Acetate came with a collection of others that were once the property of Mike Vickers. Mike Vickers was responsible for the arrangements on Kiki Dee's version of this track that was released in the UK on Fontana Records. As far as I can ascertain apart from Kiki Dee's version of this, the only other version that is known of was recorded for Roulette Records in the USA by Derek Martin and that remained unreleased until recently. This appears to have been recorded for Demonstration purposes only and was sent to the UK on tape and then cut to this acetate for reference. I'm not 100% sure the vocal is by Anthony Gourdine but it sounds just like him and I'd imagine this track would have been offered to him first as Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike wrote a huge amount of material for Little Anthony and The Imperials. The label and sleeve are stamped "Franklyn Boyd Music Ltd" who were Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike's Publishers in the UK. In VG+ Condition.

Kiki Dee - Magic Carpet Ride
Meant to mention it earlier but forgot - Derek Martin did an unreleased version of "Magic Carpet Ride" during his Roulette years. Derek
