  1. I hope no one minds but I was taking my usual lunchtime stroll and more came into my mind. Most from schooldays. Roy Orbison - Crying, Running Scared, Only The Lonely Lettermen - The Way You Look Tonight, How Is Julie Ray Peterson - I Could Have Loved You So Well, Tell Laura I Love Her Gene Pitney - True Love Never Runs Smooth, I'm Gonna Be Strong, I Must Be Seeing Things Classics IV - Traces, Stormy Jay & The Americans - Come A Little Bit Closer, Sunday And Me, She Cried (and of course Living Above My Head, but that's Northern I believe) Lou Christie - If My Car Could Talk Plus some real wimpy stuff I am too embarrassed to list. In my case I love 60s pop possibly because I was a teenager, and therefore the records have a particular meaning in many cases. Would be the same for people in the 70s, etc. Notwithstanding I reckon it was the best decade for music overall.
  2. Impossible to do an all time list as it changes, just so many great pop records, so many memories. Just a few in no particular order. The Turtles - Happy Together (reminds me of the first holiday with my girlfriend (now wife) April Stevens & Nino Tempo - All Strung Out Righteous Bros - Soul & Inspiration Beatles - If I Fell, And I Love Her, Happy Just To Dance With You Association - Cherish Buffalo Springfield - Rock 'N' Roll Woman, Expecting To Fly Laura Nyro - Wedding Bell Blues Union Gap - Woman Woman Richard Harris - McArthur Park, Didn't We Fifth Dimension - Worst That Could Happen Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic, You Didn't Have To Be So Nice Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby, All Summer Long, Wendy Sorry there are so many, but it was a great decade for pop music as well as soul. These come to mind as I sit here, but no doubt could think of loads more if I put my mind to it.

Thanks Gene, I can remember the record, I was at school at the time, but even then had my interest in trivia. Just couldn't remember if it was her. I didn't know she had made so many records until fairly recently. Couple of good tracks on the Goldmine CD of Big Top stuff, issued 3 or 4 years ago. Were any of her other tracks played anywhere, apart from I Go To Pieces.

As I never went to Wigan I only heard Nine times out of ten comparatively recently when a friend sent me an RA of it. Couldn't believe it. Indifferent Eurovision stuff. how could it be played at a northern night. We all may have laughed about the Gap Band at the Plinston dance competition, but at least I'd call that a soul record, probably get shot for saying that but you know what I mean. And people moan about Modern soul records. I suppose not going to Wigan I shouldn't comment but it does surprise me that stuff like that was played. What year would that have been?

"Just tell him Jane said hello" was the answer record to Elvis Presley's "Just tell her Jim said hello". Was Gerri's the only version as I can remember the song at the time, but can't remember who the singer was? Reckon she did some good stuff, but never topped "I go to pieces ... everytime", one of my favourite NS tracks.

Well said Gene, another artiste who had his work covered by white pop singers. Did he do any other soul records apart from They're Talking About Me?

Thanks for posting the playlists Paul. Funny how I've just done a brief review for KTF and I could hardly remember a track that was played. Looking down your lists it is all coming back to me. See you Saturday.

Just a quick note to say it was a great night, good music and great company. Probably drank too much, trying not to think what I was like. Guest Simon Bridger did a very nice spot with a good mix of music. Please post up some playlists guys. Thanks to all concerned.
  9. Gwen Owens - Wanted And Needed Dena Barnes - If You Ever Walk Out Of My Life Brenda Holloway - Crying Time and loads of others I can't think of now.

I prefer a fast track to start me off, but if something I really like comes on I get out there. I always pretend to myself that no one can see me. That way I don't worry what I look like.
  11. Cheers Mike, all is now okay and I can hear it. Nice to hear the tracks I missed on th original broadcast, and also thanks to Hippo for posting it.
  12. I have been trying to listen to the Derek Pearson on BCB Part 1 - 60 mins in the Sounds section but am getting nothing. Tried clicking away and nothing happens. Is there a problem with the streaming or is it me? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question. Hope someone can help. It is not my sound card as I've just checked that I could play a Real Audio file.

I Believe In Miracles is a great track in my opinion. It was played at Soul In The City, which is primarily a Northern night, when it was at the Old Blue Last pub near Old Street. I believe Rob Messer played it. But of course there wasn't a dance floor there. How do people on here feel about playing records like this at Northen nights?
  15. Haven't bought them yet, but I fancy the 3 UK Sue Story albums that have come out recently. I know they are a mix of blues, R&B, rock'n'roll and soul, but for an old ex-mod like myself they are a great collection.

  17. Thanks for posting your playlist Gene, Lesley and I really enjoyed it, actually we enjoyed the whole evening at Boogaloo, thanks to Michelle and Rob Messer as well. Sorry we had to go before the last DJ took over. Which was the R&B one you played Gene, I hadn't heard it before but it was really good?
  18. The Walk by Jimmy McCracklin was issued in about 1958 on US Chess, on UK London, I imagine on both 45 and 78. It was played on BBC's 6.5 Special. In 1964 it was played in London "Mod" clubs, and on the dance spot on Ready Steady Go. It was re-issued on an EP, R&B Showcase on Pye International. In my opinion a great track that I would love to hear played now.
