  1. HI ALL This is an old Spin, I used to play it in the 80s, at the now demolished BLACK HORSE PUB, WOLVES, Underated ***** https://youtu.be/IHayZD3dyn8
  2. HI ALL Had to get my copy out to spin, I loved this track the most. when I got the LP of Mick Smith after he bout it back from the USA 1974, "OH! BABY" Is clearly the best track on the "NOLAN" LP. and all 45s are hard to find also this did not get a UK release, The B side is a very nice version of the REGGAE spin, and would go nice at scooter club event, As for rare, a word that is so over used and not in context any more, it's elusive plus hard, my copy has been through a few people over the years, and shows it's vintage, with owners names scratched in, To get a mint copy under £50 is a mugging, it has always been about, that's why you think it's cheap? £200 in your pocket could you get 4 or 5 minty copies over the next 24 hours? as always DAVE 69. HI ALL, The use of PVA Wood Glue, Is the best & safest way to get rid of years of crap that gets into the record grooves. as it lifts the muck right out, I must mention that whatever cleaning method you use, PVA is a must! and safe, I come across the idea in the early 80's when I was in charge of a kids Adventure Playground, there was an article on what to do on wet cold days working with kids,it was in a book published by the ISLINGTON BUS Co, Remember APG back then attracted the unclubbable kids, so it was educational, it showed you how to make a record, by using junk, the PVA was to show the kids that a 7" record was stemmed from a mast disk, so you put 4 to 5 layers of the PVA over the plastic, leave it 24 hours and the remove it, this part of the demonstration would have been planned prior, the article went on to demonstrate how to make your own record and record player using a foil milk top a pin string beeswax & tin cans and wrapping foil, in fact PVA has many good use, making a face mask and so on? another way is to use a lint free cloth meths and a vacuum cleaner, with the small 5" T shaped head attachment, and suck the muck out. I have used this method to get rid pf warps in some records with great success, DAVE69
  4. HI ALL... I DID SAY , THAT YOU NEED A GOOD ACTIVIST TO GET THINGS GOING! & THAT PERSON SHOULD COME FROM THE CITY of MANCHESTER, WITH CONTACTS? IF THIS IS DONE! I WILL BE PROACTIVE, IF YOU HAVE JUST 10 PEOPLE, TO GO TO THE WHEEL WITH MEDIA KNOWLAGE, THIS TIME IN 7 DAYS THE WHOLE OF THE UK WILL BE AWARE, IF THE 2 FOOTBALL TEAMS GET SOPPORT? THE CLOSING DOWN OF THE TWISTED WHEEL. SHOULD GET MUCH MORE?? AS ALWAYS DAVE K
  5. HI ALL My answer to this question, makes me feel old, as to-days soul scene collectors are aware of a few thousand records, even the most rare of rare records, are available to listen to on your PC & there are sites just like Soul Source where info is shared freely? However when I started looking for rare soul in the early 70s the info was not shared so freely and when it was it come as part of a deal. I would spend hours going through records in warehouses lock up second hand junk shops, looking at record labels writers publishers being blind was a big part of the scene, This is why I moan about people whose collections are just made of £150 records and higher, OK for those who started when I did, but to have a collection that was acquired just with cash surly is not the same as the early scene, however i suppose if i had loads of spare cash to spend, I cant deny that I would buy my own top tunes that i need? Also if you think about it look at the records from 72-75 how many were by white artists, just take a look at the top 20 CBS UK RELEASES and you get the picture, these records were all bought blind originally and were huge for there sound, as it fitted in with the northern soul tag, however SHANE MARTIN is still a great NORTHERN SOUL SPIN DAVE
  6. HI ALL....YES it is RARE! Why not sell it to a listener of SMOOTH RADIO FM? DAVE69
  7. Hi All....This great Philadelphia Label, has many surprises, for those who try and complete the run, And to confuse the issue most of the label was repressed, In the back pages of Soul Source, there has been many similar entries as this, to my knowledge very few records on the label are Bootlegs such as the brilliant Mike & Ike "Sax on the TRAX"? also you cant always rely on just collecting the original Demo, as some Demos have blank sides on them missing out the rare track altogether, and then there's the old scenario of plenty copies of certain records and very few of others?, The top artist on ARTIC was Barbara Mason, of late many people who by passed her records, have come to appreciate her great voice, The Volcanoes were an outstanding group, and they seemed to have a knack of anticipating the UK rare soul scene 2 years before it really kicked of, they must of realised this as when just a few years on and a change of name, they recorded some of the worlds best loved DISCO records many of which are still more classy than the obscure finds that are played, NUMBER 1 as above is the original and I would put a Value of £10 - £15 remember the UK Soul scene is based on DEMAND? so it becomes hard to put the into the value, also the demand for the groups LAWS of LOVE & HELP WANTED, have put this in 3rd place? DAVE 69
  8. Hi All I have put this Detroit Classic from the RIC-TIC Label on to-night, for 1 reason only, After following the thread about selling up your Collection, would you get the same satisfaction from watching this? or having it at home to play as and as often as you want, and thinking about the whole history about the label and all the detroit record labels, or be a 2 dimensional freak,? Freddie Gorman RIC-TIC 101 DEMO, Value £20 real value to me right now, priceless! DAVE69
  9. Hi All As far as I am aware, we all no how Ian discovered the record, thank GOD he did, as far as I am concerned, this classic of classics, would have never seen the light. except the light of the flames, when the TK warehouse burnt down? and we no that at the time again by fluke John Anderson had a copy, and only 3 demos turned up. The record although not Northern Soul as in 100mph stomper, soon become everybody's fave, The next bit is vague, but the news of the record success was soon given to Gene Redd, and within weeks of it's 1st plat at the MECCA, Blues & Soul had an advert advertising that the record was available for sale, I will dig it out if needed, my assumption was that all the copies were 1st issues of the record, pressed up just to cash in on the MECCA spin. now we no that the DEMO was as said, and we no that the issues were pressed by or on the say so of Gene Redd, because of the demand, also that explains the use of the Label. Also John Anderson had a copy. and he had contacts, but so did Global. and also John Abbey at Blues & Soul, the answer is there someplace, as it was the only advert of it's type in B&S. Did it have connections with Contempo? who knows, the answer is who put the advert in B&S, and finally the amount of Copies that exist, in my opinion must differ from the initial release, so we now know a few more DEMOs have turned up, but most are bootlegs, and I reckon there are hundreds of Fake Issues or Counterfeit 2nd issue, Did Neil Rushton put it out once, if so he will no if it come from a master tape, if so it could well of had the instrumental on it. or been a 4 track tape and dub of the vocal, just a thought, And I am not suggesting Neil did the dead? so it makes the original DEMO Very Rare DAVE 69
  10. ¯»¿ Hi All Over the many years of collecting, as Ian has said above, from my teenage years, and apart from a couple of years, when I grew my hair and bought LP's not just the BLUES LPs that I still love, but my venture into listening to records where 1 track was 20 minutes long, and I attended the Roundhouse & the Middle Earth club when it was based in Portobello Rd, I used to like the Finches Pub also. and looking back I must admit I did enjoy seeing live acts (that's something most of you missed out on, but common back then) my collecting has focused on the obscure & rare, as most of you know! i was very influenced by Mick Smith, (as I think I must have given him more name checks in my weight up than anyone) but those who have known him as long as myself and the fact he lived down the road from me, would agree, you could not have a better mentor, over the Years I have always gone to him first for records, as he seemed to know everyone back then, However Mick to many of you is more known as a dealer in rare records, and as I have often mentioned, there are 2 collectors scenes and 2 sets of prices, The Rare Soul Scene dealers work on the principle similar to drug dealers, as once as they see you are hooked, then they really go to town, as soon as you get the record that you are after of them, they suddenly wave the next goodies in front of you, Also they cast a hypnotic spell of loyalty of obedience, i am sure that we have all witnessed, a collector for whatever reason sell there collection off, and the dealer, apply the the buying techniques, Already the word cherry picking has been stated, this tells you that the dealer wants to see how desperate you are for cash? Often you will see the Dealer go through a box and start putting records into piles, these piles start at £5 & stop at £30? anything above that will be put into a separate pile and taken as his right to buy at half price assuming that you know the current price? The trick is what your body language is saying, what they look for is 1 they know you need the money and 2 you don't want to sell? 3 you think that he is going to by them all? OK I am stereotyping a bit and I am talking about a box rather than a collection. and in my case if I took records to Mick he is well aware, that the records he wants from me wont be in the Box, but he ain't bothered as for example if I died this week, he knows that MARIE will give him the lot to sell for her? That's why my current collection has taken me so long because I could have splashed out big money with Mick to put it together, but I must have only bout about 50 of him in 10 years and most have cost well under £50, I have got more pleasure buying records this way than pocking up the phone and getting him to put my collection together, The moral of this story for me is, that the last collection I sold was my US records, since the what I got for them, if I kept them today I would have got the same for 2 of them, that's how much the scene has changed, I have always blamed the Magazine Record Collector, for turning Record collectors who would sell records, into Dealers, when they started to put adds that had no price, but the word BIDDS next to them, or Auction, I still believe in the issue whatever the price of a record on sale, offer half the amount, especially these days, as the dealers are in the same boat as you, but in some respects worse, as they have all there £££££ invested in stock, so the table is turning, I nearly started to sell up the other week, and I have now decided it is to painful, DAVE
  11. HI mate what info do you need to know? as started your topic, talking about trying to complete the SOUL SOUNDS LABEL. and then go of on a tangent, did you think he still had some left in his boot? he has been of the scene for 40 yrs, if he went to prison, it was not for BOOTLEGGING, as he just sold them, he did not make them! and although Dave Godin use to write about the bootlegging that he was alleged to be involved in, the people who collected them, were not to bothered, and as for the actual music on each record, even today there is not a naff one on the label, By the way I have the complete set, and some are extremely hard to find, of course Ranking Johnny Boy Manship, knows every thing there is to know in the world, it will cost you though? DAVE 69
  12. HI ALL GIRLS! I Would of thought, rather than the 2 days of non action, from SOULSOURCE members, can't at least 1 of you get in touch with GREENPEACE!! as they are really passionate on the subject of SAVEING THE WHALE! SOME OF THE PIONTS PUT FOREWARD SO FAR, HAVE MEANT NOTHING? THIS IS WHAT TO DO!...So far the best suggestion is to agree on is it worth saving? if so why?...... The concept of it being saved as a building of NATIONAL & LOCAL HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE, seems to me the obvious starting place, if they can save a semi-detached house in Liddypool, because of the link to Macca! and the BEATLEMANIA! (Youth sub culture) The importance to pay homage to the Manchester Club the LIVE Acts, and the cult following, for young people to gather together as the only way to hear music, BLACK MUSIC, At a time when the majority of the country had racist & bigoted views on any thing foran to them, It is now excepted that the MOD culture of the inner Cities were the 1st people to start the integration process in England, the early All NIGHT clubs owners, were taking a huge risk, by establishing these Clubs, that only 18 moths earlier, would have been raided by the youth cult of TEDDY BOYS, My paint can be better made by looking at the immigrants who lived in NOTTING HILL! Although to us the Soul Scene is our life and our passion, made with a bond of love, greater than our lust to reproduce! for many of us it is a religion (belief) that we can't live without, Again the next big step towards integration, come as a shock reaction f the working class youth towards the more privileged middle classes, who were given far more privileges to further their education, only to be HIP and Drop out, or establish sorority groups that stated all men were bad! and saw the answer to be liberated from their shackles to have the right to be feminists, I am not knocking or mocking them for this, But the girls that I met in 68 smelt of body Mist, MUM Roll on, Yardley SEA JADE, and liked to shop in CHELSEA GIRL. In 1968 the reaction to the freaks turned hostile, they looked down their noses at us, Eventually there snooty ways got answered with a leather sole, and then by BOOTS, these younger MODS were given the name of in the South East BOVVER BOYS, BOOT BOYS & AGRO BOYS, As a Micky take on the Cockney Accent, by 1969 they were christened with the name SKINHEADS, in the South East the integration carried on, but the big difference was that the majority of SKINHEAD Firms started to attend the local West Indian Clubs and most up market clubs played the new soul FUNK! the new Jamaican Music Reggae appealed to the 15 to 20 year old, However although the style went northbound, the SOUL Scene went UNDERGROUND, so much so, that you would never of known it existed, as invitation was by word of mouth only, When I went into the twisted Wheel Club in 68, it was by pure fluke as I had watched West Ham play, we were going to Blackpool, but hit the Pubs around the rail station, and just stumbled across the bob next to the wheel, Now the reason behind this post, is if I can appreciate the importance of the building and how it stands as a statement as to all the original clubs, instead of yapping on, lets at least organise a demo to protest and for those of you who still don't get the point or the difference between the Wheel that closed in 1971 and the opened one, all I can say some of us are or have fallen on hard times, the true fraternal spirit of the original club goers would take me and TOADY BOY and all the others back for that last time visit. in fact I would do the tent thing that they did at St Paul's just to make the statement? it's back in your hands BROTHERS & SISTERS RIGHT ON KTF SAVE THE TWISTED WHEEL CLUB OK! 13. Forgive me Father, for I have sinned, It has been some time since my last confession about opening my trap, before reading the article? and it seems that I do this to Pete more than any other, for that, Father I deserve what I get, 4 Hail Marys & 2 Our Fathers, in the name of Te Father, So sorry Pete and I take back any thing that you object to, however my point about the buying in records for resale is true of most dealers, and it is generally excepted that a dealer in rare record has to work on a different set of prices, than the general public work with, I am a bit more fortunate than most as I will always haggle a price down 20 to 30%, but for example Micks records are already priced 10% cheaper and more in his box? but when I read the entry to me it read in line with my reply, the copy in my collection was £40 from Kieth Minshal who wanted £60, but again sorry I did not mean to offend mate DAVE
  14. HI ALL Thats a good bit of info Mick, as I thought it looked proper until you gave that info. I remenber getting tis and "you succeded" in the same SOUL Pack but gold issues and "just like a Yo Yo" Ruby Winters, from Contempos 73, DAVE

Hi All I always liked the badge thing, even before the Northern Soul Badges, as A kid I wanted a set of US ARMY SGT STRIPES, & a FISH TAILED PARKER, WITH MEDELS & BADGES ON, I have always looked at the badge thing as being very MOD, as it made a statement, OK I do agree for some of you it may be crass, I can still vivadly remember the TORCH LOOK of a LEVI jacket with the TORCH bade above 1 pocket & the BLACK RIGHT ON FIST above the other, SKINNER JEANS and ROYALS, And I think the reason that I might give them more time, is the fact going to an All-Nighter was a long trip. for example WIGAN was 280 miles trip, and the badge was a statement, HERE IS THE 1st PROTOTYPE, FOR THE EAST ANGLIAN SOUL CLUB 1975, I AM NOT SURE BUT I THINK IT IS THE ONLY ONE MADE? IT WAS GIVEN TO ME BY KEN COX, DAVE 69
  16. £75 Pete is about the right price, this is not a common record, in my opinion, I think sometimes mate you are quoting dealers buying in prices, and not the common retail value? not everyone buys 3-500 records a month Pete, Don't get me wrong as I value records on rarity not on the current demand, the amount of records that are now half the price of 1 year ago? in the last 10 days there has been 2 Jimmy Thomas G&W DEMOS up for SALE, so going from that point of view perhaps you have a point? DAVE69
  17. HI ALL I like this thread, so my comments about this are so that I don't forget this site is for sharing info, not a off shoot of EBay. the question from BLAKE H in "what's in your box" looks like this to me :- I have a rare record, what's it worth? that's OK, but the bit that I find comical he does not want any one else to find out? why! because he wants to sell it, So Soulful that he is with this info he is not prepared to share? should he be told the truth or be mugged? as he just wants to sell it back to the most eager person that gives him a high value and has not got it! This is a classic muggers trick! I just want to no what mug buts it? for a bigger laugh DAVE 69
  18. HI ALL.....What a great label DIRECTION was, BROOKS & JERRY "I GOT WHAT IT TAKES" is the CLASSIC that we all loved when it was played on a SATURDAY NIGHTM But like a few records from this era it was purchased at record shops that were not asked to contribute there sales figures that were used, at the time to make up the top 50, if you read earl BLUES & SOUL MAGS, JA & DG were always slagging of the BBC, RADIO 1, got it the worst! Below are 3 DEMOS that really just reiterate what has been stated, DIRECTION as far as I can tell, from my own records, did not follow the EMI route with records that were never deleted, but re promoted with an updated DEMO, the ISLEY BROS "THIS OLD " & DARRELL BANKS "OPEN THE DOOR" got new DEMOS to cash in on the new rare soul scene, as BROOKS & JERRY were in the same class as the IMPRESSINS "you've been cheatin" as for the label, which is a classic label to collect, with some rare records on it, but for some reason it seems to-days scene just want about 5 of them??? below are the 3 different DEMOS Tommy Hunt is BRILLIANT & NOT EASY?? DAVE 69
  19. dthedrug replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
HI ALL this is easy! the very worst labels, are the one's that are disfigured by people, who have written on them, And I am not talking about, for example records that have come from US RADIO stations, or A&R, As it goes without saying that writing is a part of the records history, and put on the record for obvious review reasons, we may find this annoying now, however this was an important job for the station at the time, that's why again for example the record company official A side or PLUG SIDE is blacked out and XX XX are on the reverse side? The reason or Rule I also find acceptable on UK DEMOS, that come from the intended RADIO STATION, PRESS REVIEWER or PRO DJ, This would include records with NOC, as many PRO DJ would knock the centre out, this is a part of the records history, In my collection I have some records from RADIO CAROLINE, would anyone on this site try and remove the sticker, of course not. I remember, PEP had a 1st issue of DOBIE GREY "THE IN CROWD" YELLOW LONDON DEMO, WITH READY STEADY GO! stamped on it, to me it cant get any better, But when you find a rare record that has "RON 4 SHARON", KTF WIGAN RULES!, SK&F??? AND SO ON REALY ANNOYS ME, However I don't seem to care if it is a REGGAE RECORD?? that's my look on this subject DAVE 69
  20. Hi All Jimmy James UK 45 has an excellent B side, it's also on the UK EP however they all play at half the volume, also on the Australian ASTRA LP Recorded live at the MARQUEE CLUB, with Alan Bown on the other side, UK LP does not have the track, why! I really don't no! but it must be rare as I sold it in BEDFORD 1977. Have never seen it since, I had a few Artists and all the covers were water damaged, some people say the Okeh Issue is rarer that the colored vinyl, It may well be but the Colored DEMO looks the best? Dave
  21. HI AS WE APPROACH THE HALF CENTURY OF MOTOWN UK RELEASES* AND NOT THAT FAR AWAY FROM THE 1st RED & WHITE $TATESIDE DEMOS, AND THE CELABRATION OF 50 YEARS OF THE TAMLA MOTOWN 500 SERIES, I thought it was time to look again at the values and what is HOT TO-DAY IN ....DOES IT HAVE TO BE MINT TO BE RARE???? HOWEVER NICE THEY ARE OR BAD, THERE IS ONLY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MINT ONES ABOUT, & I ONLY NO 1 SET OF MINT R&W DEMOS? AND THAT MAY HAVE BEEN SPLIT UP?? Over the last 30 years the TMG500 series has been lusted after, long before the big money went on rare Northern Soul the goal of most collectors was to complete UK soul labels, For me I tried to get every release on the TAMLA MOTOWN LABEL, And it was not until I got to know John Wilkinson from Notts, in 1970/71 that I saw or took notice of the US MOTOWN, TAMLA, GORDY, SOUL, VIP Labels, my very 1st US MOTOWN record was "Nothings to good for my baby" Steve Wonder TAMLA Records, I remember showing it to my cousin who had some Rare MOTOWN like the TRIBUTE TO UNCLE RAY LP, However it was not until 1972 that I saw my 1st RED & WHITE TAMLA MOTOWN DEMO And by the end of 74 I decided that I would give up collecting TAMLA MOTOWN UK all together after finding out that a collector who lived in Langham Place of Oxford St had as far as I was concerned every thing from LONDON AMERICAN, FONTANA, ORIOLE, $TATESIDE & TAMLA MOTOWN, This put me in a HELPLESS situation? (pun very much intended for the astute?) However in 2012 I find myself without intention having around 150 UK DEMOS out of the red & whites there are some minty ones, some ex noc ones and some really bad ones (but play great) So lets prepare for the 50th Birthday of TAMLA MOTOWN with what's HOT & what's NOT? values. :wicked:HERE ARE 4 RECORDS TO START WITH, THE TMG555 IS A CLASSIC COST ME £15 STILL MINTY THE UPTIGHT HAS NOC MINTY £10 SHOTGUN MINTY £15, GRT READY VG+ NOC Car Boot £1. 4 CLASSIC RECORDS, THAT THE WORLD KNOWS HOWEVER IN DIFFERANT CONDITION, THE ISLEY BROS "THIS OLD HART OF MINE" TO ME IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST MOTOWN RELEASES AND I PERSONALY RATE THE RECORD AS 100 X MORE DESIRABLE THAN SOME OF THE CRAP IN THE 530# DAVE
  22. Hi All I have just had a good look at some of my CHICARGO records including the CHESS group of labels, and although I don't pretend to be an expert at all, the only difference I can tell is the Johnny Sayles record with the words distributed by ..... 7 the DJ copies are manufactured by CHESS, and the one without are still CHESS printed labels, so you could argue that the DEMO & the distributed words on the label are 2nd pressings otherwise it would read MFG, BY CHESS PRODUCING CORP. If you see my point, also the wax is similar to smaller CHICARGO LABELS??? DAVE
  23. MIKE All I can say about the Flamingo, I have already said, however what I can't say in words was the electric atmosphere, that hit you as you entered Wardour St, the same is true for all the West End Clubs, and I suppose to some degree similar to those who go to the 100 CLUB for the 1st time, however, Today's SOHO is nothing like how it was in the 60s. Again I have written about that, The Flamingo differs from most clubs of the time as it was Cosmopolitan
  25. Pete I would advice you to think! before you use some of the above methods, they may well work, However the record is a PYE And the labels will look dreadful if you put any thinner type liquid on for more than 2 seconds, I would suggest a thin paint brush dabbed in lighter fuel cover the area a bit by bit approach dust with a dust or fag ash on sticky or tacky surface then suck of with vacuum cleaner however you do it, it will still show up darker once removed, on PYE labels RED ATLANTICS and some POLYDOR labels, if you are selling the record leave it to the buyer, as a sticker mark will only knock about £15 of a rare British 45, but a poor attempt to deceive the buyer could not 50% of the same record, As I say think first if any of the above are known to work on a PYE label. I would also like to no? my tip for everyone is look at web pages that do fine art restorations? DAVE
