  1. H9 ALL A BIT OF BETTYE SWANNE THE RECORD IS MINT DTHEDRUG
  2. HI ALL...MY CHOICE TODAY WOULD BE THE VERY SAME RECORD IF I WAS ASKED THIS QUESTION IN 1975, THE RECORD I HAVE PICKED IS THE B SIDE OF A CLASSIC FROM 1969, AND THAT SIDE IS ESSENTIAL TO OWN AS A BUTTON DOWN BEN SHERMAN, IF YOU FOLLOW MY DRIFT? THE VERY FACT THAT IT'S A B SIDE, SCORES PIONTS, THE AVERAGE PRICE FOR THIS RECORD IS FROM 20P TO £2, BUT IT'S VALUE IS IN THE SHERE QUALITY OF IT. INTRO SCORES HIGH PIONTS SONG AND IT'S SOULFUL MESSAGE SCORES TOP MARKS, DANCEABILITY, THIS RECORD WILL STOP YOU SITTING DOWN ROMANCING...AND GET YOU ON THE FLOOR DANCEONG MOVEING YOUR FEET TO THE BEAT, IT;S GOT SOUL POWER BUT IT'S NOT JB IT'S GOT THE WOW FACTOR THAT SOUNDS SO NICE YOU WILL PLAY IT TWICE EVERYTIME THIS RECORD HITS THE SPOT WITH WHAT IT'S GOT ... WHICH IS SOUL FROM HEAD TO TOE, SOUL, IF YOU CAN DO BETTER FOR THE PRICE YOUR SOUND HAS TO BE NICE, LET ME HEAR YOU SAY YEH!... BOGALOO AND UPTIGHTEBOUTOFFSIGHTING WHAT THE F**K IS IT, IT'S DTHE DRUGS #10 ALL TIME FAV, IN HIS TOP 10,000 SOUL ROOM FONTANA 45B TF 1058 278 838 TF THAT'S MY PICK AND I HOPE YOU LIKE IT AS MUCH AS ME? HERE I AM, SOME OF YOU WILL NOT YNOW THAT RECORD BY THE INFO I HAVE GIVE! SO FOR YOU PEOPLE ONLY.. A TWISTED WHEEL CLASSIC WITH A TOP SIDE THATS GOT THE TRUE SPIRIT OF 69 "IT;S THE MAGIC OF YOU GIRL" STEAM, A TRUE CLASSIC SOUND FROM THE BEGININGS OF NORTHERN SOUL, IF SOMEONE COULD PLEASE PUT A CLIP ON FOR ME, WE COULD JUST HAVE A SUMMER HIT? NA NA NA NA HEY HEY KISS HIM GOODBYE, I AM PLAYING IT NOW DAVE
  3. HI ALL......THIS IS A GREAT QUESTION,,, TO THE NON SOUL OR REGGAE FAN YOU WOULD THINK THAT ALL OUR MUSIC SOUNDS THE SAME? AND TO MY OLD DEAR "GOD BLESS" SHE WOULD BANG ON MY DOOR AND SHOUT "TURN THAT JUNGLE MUSIC OFF" WAY BEFORE GOLDIE AND THE CARE NAMED THE FAST RAGGA JUNGLE MUSIC? THE TRUTH IS ALL ABOUT ECONOMICS, THIS WAS COMMON PRACTICE IN THE 60s & PERHAPS FOR FANS OF NORTHERN SOUL, THE ONE AND ONLY TEDDY VANN MADE AT LEAST 6 RECORDS WITH A BACKING TRACK THAT HE JUST WOULD NOT LET GO UNTIL HE HAD A HIT WITH IT. RESONANTLY WE WERE TALKING ABOUT NOLAN CHANCE WHICH IS A BETTER EXAMPLE OF HOW RGE SAME BACKING TRACK CAN PRODUCE 2 REALLY DIFFERENT RESULTS BUT BOTH BEING QUALITY ALSO IN THE SAME CATO GARY IS YVONNE BAKER V THE CHESTERFIELDS (THANKS BUTCH) HOWEVER THE PRACTICE STARTS MUCH EARLY ON, WITH CHICAGO STUDIOS BACK IN THE EARLY 30s WITH THE BLUES, MANY SONG USE THE STANDARD 12 BAR BLUES RIFF, AND THE BIG CHANGES COME FROM ONLY A HANDFUL OF BLUES MEN, PERHAPS THE MOST FAMOUS RIFFS WERE BY ROBERT JOHNSON WITH HIS GORDY CHANGE FROM THE 8TH BARR TO THE 12TH BARR AND TO THE ELMORE JAMES RIFF OF "ROCK ME BABY" IF YOU COMBINE THE 2 YOU HAVE EVERY R&B ROCK N ROLL AND WHITE ROCK RECORD (WELL NEARLY) ALSO AND MUCH MORE NOTICEABLE, IS ON JAMAICAN REGGAE, AS IT WAS THERE WHERE THE PRACTICE BECOME THE NORM AS WHEN I STARTED BUYING REGGAE RIGHT FROM THE START THE INSTRUMENTAL SIDE WAS INFARCT THE MORE IMPORTANT SIDE OF THE 2, IN 1968 WHEN I GOT ERIC BARENTS THE HORSE / ACTION LINE, I DID NOT NO ANYTHING REALLY ABOUT THE MUSIC EXCEPT THAT I LIKED IT, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT IT WAS THE LATEST SOUND FROM JAMAICA, AND NO ONE OF MY AGE WENT INTO THE MUSIC IN DEPTH BLACK OR WHITE, BUT THE INSTRUMENTAL SIDE OR VERSION AS IT WAS CALLED OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS POPPED UP TIME AND TIME AGAIN, IN FACT POOPED UP IS QUITE APT AS IT WAS ANDY CAPP POP-A-TOP THAT MADE MOST OF US AWARE OF THE VERSION SIDE WHEN HE TOOK A REWORKING OF THE EARLY 6S BILLY STEWART SONG THAT WAS COVED BY DERRICK MORGAN ON BLUEBEAT RE RELEASED ON TROJAN IN 68 AND STARTED TO PLAY ABOUT WITH THE A SIDE VOCAL AND THE B SIDE INSTRUMENTAL, FROM 1 RECORD HE GOT AT LEAST 30 MINUTES OF MIXING TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL POSSIBLE, AND IT'S GOOD FUN TO TRY AND COLLECT ALL THE CUTS, AND IT'S A LOT MORE THAN THE THE STATEMENT "TURN IT OVER FOR VERSION 3" AS VERSION 3 IS NOT THERE? I HAVE 10 CUTS OF FAT MAN/POP-A-TOP. WHEN IT IT COMES DOWN TO IT, IT'S ALL ABOUT SAVING MONEY, PUT A DJ ON IT OR A MELODIC OR JUST MAKE AMPLIFY ED DUB NOISES AND YOU HAVE A HIT? THIS PRACTICE THAT STARTED IN CHICAGO AND WAS SKILLFULLY PUT TOGETHER IN JAMAICA, GOT PICKED UP BY CHICAGO BACK IN THE EARLY 80s GOT REARRANGED IN NEW YORK AND TURNED INTO HIP HOP, THE SAD THING IS SINCE IT WENT BACK TO THE STATES, THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY NOTICEABLE HITS TO COME FROM JAMAICA SINCE SNOW & CHAKA DEAMUS & PLIERS DAVE

  5. HI ALL ....IF ONLY YOUR LOVE OF RARE SOUL AND YOUR COLLECTION OF RECORDS ENTITLED YOU (99%) OF US, TO GET A SPOT NOW AND AGAIN WOULD BE NICE!, THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS MUCH HARD HITTING & INDEED POLITICAL, THE WAY I HAVE SEEN IT GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS:- PAYING YOUR DUES - THIS MEANS IN IT'S SIMPLE TERMS, WHO DO YOU BUY YOUR RECORDS FROM? IT'S NOT THE RECORDS YOU HAVE? IT'S WHO YOU GOT THEM OFF, AS TO KEEP YOU AS A GOOD CUSTOMER, ("WHICH MEANS, YOU SPEND SHIT LOADS OF CASH WITH A DEALER WHO ALSO DJs AND WILL KEEP YOU KEEN BY GIVING YOU THE EARLY SPOT AT AN ALL-NIGHTERS")THE IN CROWD - YOU GET YOURSELF SO BLINKERED, WHEN YOU BUY YOUR RECORDS, YOUR LOYALTY TO THE RECORD DEALER BECOMES A LOVE AFFAIR, AND YOU REALLY THINK HE FEELS THE SAME BACK? (THIS SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED WITH FRIENDSHIP)LOYALTY - ONE OF THE BI GIST NEGATIVES OF THE RARE SOUL SCENE IS THE POOR SUPPORT GIVEN TO SOME GIGS OR VENUES, THIS NORMALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU MISTAKE LOYALTY WITH SUPPORT (PROMOTERS OFTEN DELIBERATELY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR LOYALTY, BY CLASHING A SOUL NIGHT WITH A NEW VENTURE? AND SPOIL THE CHANCES OF NEW DJs GETTING A CHANCE TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES, OR EVEN WORSE JUST TO SPOIL THE EVENT? THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED RESONANTLY TO NEIL RUSHTON ATTEMPT AT DUDLEY ZOO (THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION) AS ON PAPER IT SHOULD OF BEEN A PACKER, INSTEAD OF A NO STARTER? WHY AND HOW THIS HAPPENED ASK YOURSELVES.MOST OF US COULD DO A GOOD SPOT I'M SURE, BUT AGAIN IT GOES BACK TO WHAT RECORDS YOU PLAY, ^I REMEMBER THE NIGHT I PLAYED THE CLASSIC SULAVANS AT THE BLACK HORSE IN WOLVES - PEP DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL, I WAS NOT ASKED BACK TO DJ AFTER THAT??THE BEST WAY TO GET A SPOT AND PERHAPS THE EASY EST IS JUT COME STRAIGHT OUT WITH IT TO THE PROMOTER AND ASK FOR A SPOT, SHOW HIM YOUR TOP 50 TUNES AND SUGGEST A 30 MINUTE SPOT TO START WITH, IT HELPS ALSO IF YOU GET YOUR MATES TO SUPPORT YOU ON THE NIGHT BY STAYING ON THE DANCE FLOOR AND WALKING OF AS SOON AS THE NEXT DJ PLAYS HIS/HER FIRST TUNE, EVEN IF IT'S THE BEST RECORD OF THE NIGHT,THE TRUTH - NO ONE IS WILLING TO GIVE UP THERE SPOT, SO YOU CAN HAVE A GO. WOULD YOU?TO SUMERIA'S _ AFTER 30 YEARS OF LIVING IN WOLVES, THE BIGGEST AND MOST NOTICEABLE ISSUE, IS IF THE WOLVES & THE STOKE CROWD GOT TOGETHER AND DID AWAY WITH SPOILER NIGHTS, THE SCENE WOULD VERY QUICKLY GROW BACK TO THE HALCYON DAYS OF THE 70s OR EVEN THE EARLY NIGHTERS AT KEELE.TO CONCLUDE - IT'S NOT ABOUT RECORDS IT'S ABOUT ATTITUDE AND DOES YOUR FACE FIT, AND OF COURSE MANY COLLECTORS DON'T WANT TO DJ AS FAR AS I AM AWARE, WHO KNOWS AND WHO CARES?? Mr KILWORTH
  6. Hi All .....That reminds me there was a BOOTLEG of the WINGATE Love-in STRINGS - LOVE IN inst / JJ Barnes _ Sweet Sherry, early 73, that BOOTLEG was probably my favorite Northern SOUL record at the time, I always thought it was a shame that it was a boot instead of an Oriana issue, still my fav boot of al time DAVE
  7. Hi All ... Just to add my info on the London UK issue, I forget the name of the people who printed the labels for DECCA but I do recall reading about the London Issue way back in the 70s and not in a soul fanzine, but in a music trade magazine, where the question was asked if DECCA had pressed the copy as a stock issue, the reply was along the lines of the Demo came out right near the end of there license deal and EMI was going to distribute, Normally the record (Darrel Banks) would have come out as a LONDON issue, but as it was a minor hit in the US, EMI wanted to use it to launch it's new acquisition, And there was no objection from DECCA to argue over this record so the planned issue was stopped and I think there is about 14 weeks between the London Yellow Demo and the STATESIDE RELEASE, ii have never worked out the actual time, adding to this the LONDON STOCK Labels where printed at the same time as the yellow demo labels, now the only way a London stock copy can exist is if a worker got a label and did a 1 off? and although thee is no proof of a stock copy existing, it can not be ruled out, there is a similar situation with a T-REX single? I rate the RED & WHITE DEMO as rare what ever the answer is All the UK DEMOS are rare but the GREEN & WHITE DEMO is nice it is not in the same league as the RED & WHITE or the YELLOW and BLACK LONDON that does not exist would be worth a fortune, it would be good though if someone had some labels, as the T-REX missing number has labels?? I wish i could remember where I read this, but it is along them lines, DAVE

  13. Hi All.......AH! HA! what a great article/s this is the sort of honest , and straight talking of recall, it almost drew me to romance, well recommended, Now I will not try and be clever and rash in my opinions about it all starting from LONDON, as we all are aware of the history of the MOD sub culture , and after the cockney reds thing and the SKINHEADS STARTED AT WEST HAM & MILLWALL, (true)? I will not venture that the MOD movement started in 5 mile radius of SHEPARD'S BUSH in 1962 and spread very quickly to the teenage wastelands of the home counties and the large city's of England but I will say it did not have any NORTHERN PIT BOYS IN THE RANKS, THINKING OF THE GREEBO BLOKE FROM KES, comes to mind?.. and leave it down to you! CHEERS FOR THIS PAULDAVE THE BLADE!
  14. Hi All it would have to be this rare UK Nugget in it;s most rarest form a PAMA PRE on SHOCKING PINK PLASTIC, I did not realise this existed as a single, but for the astute ones it does not, this is a rare non PAMA EP FEATURING 2 TRAX BY THE VOLUMES AND 2 BY HOAGY & LIZ "i WAS HERE 1st - HOAGY LANDS "THE NEXT IN LINE" i CANT DO A SOUND CLIP AS THE RECORD IS TOTALLY UNPLAYABLE?? BUT IT JUST SHOWS YOU WHATS STILL OUT THERE, LAST WEEK IT WAS A RARE BUNKY AND THIS WEEK I HAD A RARE BUNK UP, VALUE PLEASE? Mr KILWORTH
  15. Hi All .....Chalky I did a posting yesterday to this, but it did not post?? the fact is I have to agree with your statements as fact, this sale must be the most disapionting one for a long time, every thing about the disc is right, or was right, and the price it raised, shows how the scene, (collectors) has changed, the BUNKY copy was one of the big mystries of the old NORTHERN SOUL scene, along with CHUBBY CHECKER'S "YOU JUST DON'T KNOW" I remember that it was stated by most that it did not exist on a US imprint, and it was recorded in London?? but we all no now it does exist on a Wesst coast label, and is a rare exampl of a rare UK record being more valuble on a US COPY, (THERE ARE NOT MANY) I suppose that the price differance of the UK copy against US copy was the guide we should have used in the case of the BUNKY copy? Hoever the BUNKY copy is in a differant league the Mr Checker, If it had been mine I for a start would not have sold it, but traded it against other rare stuff with a collector who was looking at the record as a rare example, not as an investment, as it has proberly depreciated already as it was stated"if JM cant get the top price who can, it is also worth considering that the £4K i valued it at, and I was being conservitive or so I thought, makes me wonder what are the expectations of records that have been discoverd from the 80s and onwards worth?? thos collectors who have paid £2K for a record have to be asking what is the Bench mark, it I was to cash in? in cant be the rule of thumb that it;s just 1 of 5 known, anymore, Have we returned to the old days when the top records ended up as white elephants?? Again I find myself saying aint I glad that I collect UK soul, as the vast majority is class and realy inexpensive against the rare US Origanals? To conclued when I got my copy from JA Soul Bowl, I was still under the inpresion that the shooting star label was it's rarest form, thats what happens when you buy a record for £1.75 and years later the £200 I gave Lil Dave Weldon for the DEMO copy I still have still makes the BUNKY COPY $2500 dearer. thats quite a mark up seeing that the only differance is the Name?? what Price is the Constalation DEMO woth today has it gone up on the back of the BUNKY find?.. and the Frank Wilson Bit Chalky I got so wrong! But there you go! Mr Dave Kilworth.
  16. HI ALL JUST FOR THE RECORD...."BEING A ROCK STAR, IS NOT WHAT IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE" IF YOU CACH THE DRIFT? YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THIS "CRACK USERS NEED TREATMENNT" ??? MY MATHS SAY IF YOU HAD THE WHITE DEMO AND SPENT THE REST ON CRACK , THE BUNKY COPY WOULD END UP AS THE REAL DEAL/ Whatever the finishing price is, is not the point, it is still one of the worlds top rare soul records, Plus you have to add into the equation, that the Frank Wilson record is a MOTOWN record, as such being a MOTOWN record it has world market appeal, the same can be said about Reggae, Northern Soul Market is a much smaller market, and thats a fact, Nolan Chance Just Like The Wheather on BUNKY IS worth £4k and upwards and in a differant class than Frank Wilson Which has been released! Not in the states but on the famous UK black TAMLA MOTOWN LABEL, plus it was BOOTED, GOOD LUCK JOHN and dont take the Bait,:ph34r:Mister Kilworth
  17. Hi and thanks for info, for some strane reason! I have never considerd myself as a collector of MOTOWN, but oin throuh the UK TAMLA MOTOWN Label there must be over 400 TMG records from the 5,6.&700s and 100+ reen & White DEMOS and 13 Red & White in various condion also I have a small number of the and while the collectors want the rare stuff I am very happy havein BABY LOVE & MY GUY as red & white DEMOS the later in my opinion, is one of the best recordins Berry Gordy JR released, it has every thing, plus a few EPs, So althouh the TMAS reetins from Hitsville is a US recordin (Nashvile stamped it was intended for the UK & Europe Fans only, so in a way I could always keep it till I find the riht collectore to have it (makes a ood Jinle for myself , with the hello Dave quotes???) I remember Sharron Daveis was writer on MOTOWN in Blues & Soul, so I will have the do the FLICK as EVD would say I will ask Mick or Ady as I am sure ady could write a ex book on MOTOWN,
  18. HI TOADY BOY .. WHAT A RECORD! JUST HAD TO BLOW THW DUST OF MY NU-BEATS , APART FROM EVERYTHING I LIKE ON THE RECORDING , THE #1 FEATURE IS THE BRASS WHICH CRYS OUT TO BE SAMPLE. AND THEN THE BACKING VOCALS, NICE PICK. HOWYOUDOIN TOADY BOY DAVE THE BLADE, "NO MATTER WHERE IT'S MADE I AM SHARPER THAN A RAZOR BLADE! I TELL YOU! SO LETS TUNE IT UP AND REGGAE! BOSS,
  19. HI ALL..... As I am no expert on Jazz. what I like is what I Like approach, however the opportunity for you to have a nice pile of Jazz at a bargain is on offer, i have looked at some of the prices of some of them listed and although no £100 record, most are in the £20-30 price bracket, the music ranges span from the late 50S moder jazz to the mid 80s jazz funk, there are over 10 LPs in the JOB LOT and my price is such a bargain, I will give more info to any Jazz fan who PM me, I relay dint want to sell these to a dealer, lets say that again if you are a dealer? and you would like them the price is not negotiable, and I cant stand cherry pickers, especially when the offer has no rubbish. if you have never listened to jazz buy this pack with 3 mates and have a jazz weekend break, just a idea! Dave
  20. HI ALL,,,Back in 1964, DAVE GODIN visited the states and mat up with BERRY GORDY JR on behalf of TMAS, this visit resulted in the Limited release of the GREETINGS FROM HITSVILE. Although I first bought Blues and Soul and Home of the Blues in the late 60s, I actually started to keep my copies from #56, and although I have all copies now (need #2) none of them goes into the history of this release beyond what I already no. Are there more in depth articles about TMAS and the DISC. Also how limited was it, as some say 300 and others say 1000? what is the value today, as I remember before EBAY, this was a HOLY GRAIL RECORD?? DAVE

IN MY YOUTH IT WOULD HAVE BEEN, I always wanted to do the stonedheng trip! I was knackerd after this, still I have ticked it of the list of 1000 things to do before I DIE? The record on the LEGRAND LABEL is the one that I had in my origanal US collection and the best for sound quality. DAVE
  22. HI ALL Some LEVI JACKETS with badges on make a massive statement about the person, and like them or hate them, The HELLS ANGELS LEVI is the ultimate example of of a good LEVI, ... I still have 3 BIG E LEVI jackets and all my WIGAN BADGES, None of which would be put on a Jacket except the red rose origanal above the left top pocket, the jacket for sale is missing a bar towel, what a nasty look that was, DAVE

Hi All I am sure there are 3 female versions on various Motown albums?? cant think who Theo, (that a poor reply?) I had a great version by William Stevenson? on EMBER which Mick Smith had of me a few years ago, and well worth getting, I always get confused with this title as there are 2 different songs Johnny Nash has a good version???? At least I tried DAVE
  24. Hi Pete thats the first and only copy I have ever seen, I cant see how this, is possible as the Demo as we all no is the blue label. my copy is a green issue, and there was some talk on value , the green issue and the blue are about the same in value and rarity, if that is right this unknown demo must be the rarest copy of them all i don't no the current value of the blue but the green demo must be at least 25% more , as this sort of tk Mick it's his type of record, anyway, pray tell me how can you sell suh a record, and don't say money needs? a very nice find, it should get quite a lot methinks, but i am old school? PETE £200 is a good fair price I disagree about the low price for the green issue as for every 10 blue you see 1 green?? DAVE
