Just another Saturday night, listening to things I bought recently, things from my collection and any thing I like. Such sad news, I have great memories of Jon, such a genuine guy. I remember at one of his all nighters I needed to go and get some cash to buy a record. He handed me the keys to his car and told me where the cash point was to be found. So generous. RIP

After selling up my 7" collection I kept all my LPs and 12's and promised that I'd only buy new release 7"s or interesting picture sleeves etc. I've sort of stuck to my own rules! I've started to put some stuff up on mixcloud again, this ones a mix of 7"s including some New Northern Soul, some Modern Soul and just soulful tunes I like. The two standout tracks on the new album - Face Your Fear - are Till the End (real deal new Northern Soul stomper IMHO) and Heavens on the Other Side. The whole album is good and picked it up in HMV on vinyl for £20 ish.

Back in the late 80's Mick Godfrey ran a few Modern Soul Allnighters in Bedford. I was lucky enough to be invited to do a set at one of them. And even luckier that my old friend and travelling companion from back in the day, Mark Oliver, came with me, recorded it and kept the recording for 30 years!!!! Two sides of a C60 tape from 87. I've also started putting a couple of other mixes up there as I digitise my collection, at least that's what I tell the wife why I'm listening to my records every night :-)

So just got home from working away for a few days, everyone in bed early so dragged a pile of records out. Played Victoria Williams & J B Ledbetter Show Some Sign as I remebered playing that eons ago. Then flipped it over and found We're So Satisfied is bloody brilliant, and if I'd just been click playing would never have done that. I'm a happy boy :-)

Picked up the Capitols We Got a Thing on ATCO in a record shop in Greenwich last week, for £11. Pulled it out because they had a cover of Open The Door To Your Heart, among others, actually really good versions of Hold on I'm Coming and Knock On Wood which pleased me when I played it back at home. Then on the end of side two I found this beauty, and it's never been off the turntable since: The LP is spot on from start to finish, happiest purchase this year so far :-)

Dean, If legit and the first time on vinyl then play them out, dropped into one of your sets they would fit in a treat. I would love to hear a couple of the legitimately issued M-Pac Onederful things played out. As we used to say way back when if it's good enough ti play then play it. Cheers Mark.

Hi Youngsoulie81. 1. Why portable? I have a Riga Turntable which is great, pretty basic in terms of design but all the investment goes into the tone arm which is the most important piece. 2. Buy with confidence from many sellers on here. Listen to snippets of the records and buy what you like to listen to, not for its rarity. There's so much good quality stuff to start a collection with without busting the bank.

Pete, Tommo Oz, Ant etc I miss em all, I know that as we've aged we've gotten mellower, but not knowing any of the younger generation, I do sometimes wonder if there are any characters of their class around these days, hidden away among their youthful gatherings........... Then I think probably not!!!!

I went to see the film at the ICA in London last tuesday. Thought it might be quite good to watch such an underground thing right on the Mall, just along from her maj's residence. Fully expecting to be alone at the late showing. The two screens were at the back of the bookshop and there was quite a crowd gathered, all hanging round the books on art, looking at them knowingly, I couldn't make head nor tail of what was round me!! I did think, while at the back of the crowd, that when the other crowd were trying to get out, that if I started pushing at the back I could get the entrance to the screen to resemble the door scene from the Casino documentary. Low and behold that scene appeared before me on the not quite so big screen. I had a little chuckle to myself. The crowd of which I speak were 90% a lot younger than I, which was an interesting dynamic I hadn't expected. So in we go. Now at this point I need to state that I didn't go to the Casino, I started at Yate in 1980 a fresh faced 14 year old so never got to Wigan. However, during the 80's the scene was still full of the types of Character portrayed, I have met and knew well at least a few of every type of person portrayed. And one of my mentors in the early days of my journey gave me the same advice to me about never turning to the needle, as it was a dark one way street. So I think it was spot on in terms of the characterisation of the people. I think the sweary DJ's may be harking back to the 80's rather than the 70s. As for the darkness (lighting) of the film, I worked in dark factories and between Friday evening and Monday morning I never saw the light of day, the weekends were one long dark night of music, travel and mates. I really enjoyed the film, as I said before, never went to Wigan, but please don't hold that against me. I'll leave my final words to a young girl (no more than 20) who on the way out was trying to explain to her friend - "it really was like that up north in the 70s, it was only the music that kept them going" She must be studying history or something!!!

Good to hear from you too Jim, the first question is a bit of a daft one, I just can't remember when it was, no surprise there then. And yes I still have most of the records from back then, sold or swapped on some of the big tickets of the day, but have added quite a bit to the collection since then too. Currently working on brownie points so I can go to at least one of this years Peebles sessions ;-)

That would be me then Jim. :-) Not quite dead yet!! I did actually drive up to Scotland for the Shotts afternoon session at the weekender last year, then spent the whole afternoon talking to Adey Pierce, Jon Anderson and Butch in the record bar. Then I drove home again before the night session, not a bad round trip for a chat these days!!!

Hahaha, I too remember these tapes. Who knew how anyone got anywhere when trying to guess intros and find their way to some strange corner of the UK in the dark. Good to see you kept all that stuff Mark.

Is there a transfer window for the most wanted now then?????

I gave up buying big lads years ago. My attitude to collecting is thus, if I like it and the price is right and I've got a bit of cash, I'll buy it. I've been on the scene (and off a lot) since 1980, and there are still records that I haven't heard, or don't remember heard for one reason and another. I still get excited by picking up something that I haven't heard before even if it's a £10 "cheapie" that never got played because it wasn't rare enough.

I remember one trip to Stafford from Gloucester with my then girlfriend before I had a car. It was the well reknown snow all nighter when it was fine when we all went in and arctic tundra when we came out. Football in the car park etc. When the trains finally started running it was well into the afternoon and when we finally got on a train we both fell asleep. Waking up as we pulled into Bristol. So we jumped off and waited for ages for a train going back the other way. Finally got home about 12 hours after the nighter ended. Another classic trip was when the marks brothers went to a soul night in Cheltenham area. We were chatting to Brian Rae who was DJing at a nighter in the midlands somewhere but had drunk too much. So we drove him there so he could meet his obligation, but had no way home. So we walked and hitched from motorway services to motorway junction all the next day. Finally getting to a local motorway junction and walking back to his place about 5 miles. Finally getting there again about 12 hours after the nighter finished. We got into some trouble.

I'm not a tight wad by any means but hate paying fees for things I can avoid. Whenever I buy anything from online retailers I am happy to use paypal to pay as it gives a little protection. However for deals between friends (in this category I include all record purchasing from SS) I try to use bank transfers. you can split up the sharing of the account and sort code using different communications methods, email, text, instant message, to keep it secure, but there is no cost to either party and the money usually get to where it's needed quickly. Just my humble preference.
