Blue-eyed Soul?
Its rare for a white person to sing soul music like a black person... About as rare as a black person to have blue eyes. Here is a nice piece of blue eyed soul from a great lady (in duo with George Benson) The plot thickens..

How far would you travel..
To get to a soul night/nighter? 100 club and about 250 miles is about the furthest I've travelled, but what about you? Ed

Blue-eyed Soul?
Pop is short for popular. Popular means it appeals to the masses. If it's successful it will sell well and make lots of money. I'm sure at the concept stage ALL records set out to be popular, whatever the colour of the artist etc. Berry Gordy sussed that out early doors, and got his artists making records for the masses any way he could. Blue eyed is exactly as you described in my opinion. Must make up 50% of the 60s element of NSoul. Ed

Poll: Version Battle - Ever again
My mistake perhaps from reading the posts. Gene 67 release and bernie 69 release. I never heard of Gene until about 79, and even then only as record listing as opposed to a regular play out. Probably one of the most obscure records to have two versions. Ed

Poll: Version Battle - Ever again
Back in the day before t'internet! Bernie was a massive tune. Sought after and at least a weeks wages. Not long after though, Gene was appearing on lists for about the same money, but not played out much. We all realise they sound very different, hence the poll.. It is a revelation Gene got played before Bernie... TSWONS !! Ed

Bernie for me, and it was a very sought after tune. However if there was no Bernie, I think Gene would have still done well. Ed

Babe Ruth Elusive
Spiritually, 27 is about right.. Mechanically, these 55 year old bones are restricting the quality and quantity of what I could do when I actually was 27. More of a 5 day lover, than 7, in the dance floor sense! Ed

Babe Ruth Elusive
Although I went to the Blackpool Mecca a few times, towards the end, I did not experience the pure quantity of tunes getting played week in week out which meant, so I'm told only 3 or 4 weeks of exposure for many records. Cleethorpes somewhat embraced the same thing with so many breaking records like elusive. Its inevitable that some recent 'discoveries ' are simply dusted off tunes put at the back of the box back in the day. So is the sun in 1979 would have been a proper oldie by then! Ed

Mickie Champion - What Good Am I
Before she died a couple of years ago, did anybody hear Mildred Sallier, or MIckie Champion sing this live? I did see her advertised in the LA music guides about 2005 still doing shows out there. Ed

J Manship Auction Results 09/08/2017
I had a Charles Johnson when nobody would give more than a fiver for it. Sold it for a tenner. Thought I'd done well... I should have put a sell on clause in the sale, like the footballer transfers do now:) Ed

never heard it before, but had to buy it
I disagree, I think the author is talking about impulse buying a tune, immediately he got a chance to do so because he thought the record was awesome. Not looking at a label and thinking he would take a chance. That would make another thread. Ed

I stopped buying records a long time ago, but came across this track and ordered the cd straight after. What a voice.. Ed

Biggest selling Northern Record - Gloria Jones - Tainted Love ??
Must have been a sensation when it first hit the Northern scene. Unique and almost Taylor made for the furious dance floors back then. Ed

How you got into northern soul
Falbala, reaching for the best, out on the floor, the flasher, sharonettes going to a go go, the night, sexy sugar plum. Around 1975, these were the few tunes that broke through at Baileys and Tiffany's nappy nights, where ' bigger boys ' performed the ritual know as 'northern soul ' and we're mobbed by girls girls and more girls, and me and my mates thought we better get some of this action. So we went to a few youth clubs where records like bar b que, Queen of fools, and panic, got played and we learned to dance, basic steps of course. Soul nights, all dayers, all nighters, and that was that, hook line and sinker. Ed

What was on at the 100 Club in September 1985
A great venue for atmosphere. Been going a long time as well https://www.the100club.co.uk/history/ Ed

Agreed. Please do that. A simple request to see what's popular today around the country, has turned into a farce. Ed

The top 500
Its strange but when I first started to go to all nighters in 1976, it was frowned upon to wear a Northern Soul patch or even mention it as a term. The mood had sound to rare soul etc, even though disco, funk, jazz funk, was entering the playlists. Today we see the term Northern Soul being celebrated. Adding northern gives licence to play non soul if in fact the DJ and crowd demand it. Not really sure how the term made such a huge recovery, but it has, and records like Bob Sinclair survive and prosper. Just like cats eyes, scratchy, interplay, and a multitude of others did. The post was simply to offer up popular tunes today. Its not about serious debate on what is or not fantastic soul music! Ed
