  1. Funnnily enough I was reading a biog of Janis joplin last night where they clamed these guys were into Dylan and the folkies rather than soul and funk

they don't sound too bad, apart from the mix, but I don't know if its because the're on a small stage but the seem so static for a soul band, just not dynamic enough in the performance department.
  6. its all in the past tense this underground debate, lol.
  7. isnt 10 just about the abnsolute minimal legal requirement for an event that size? doesnt seem like a lot to manage that size of venue with that amount of people in it.

It should do, but to most Upfront means, non northen (mod, latin, R and b, ect) 60's Dancers, Ok you get the odd earlly 7ts funk thing thrown in, but lets be honest here, the upfront and apparantly open minded crowd, dont want to hear anything that sounds like modern soul. When you going to hear a Boggie record at one of these events? or even a 9ts garage record?. honest answers please.
  9. that's nice, its got a great loose feel to it, but the band can really play, jazzers on their day off, I guess.
  10. thanks dave, always wanted to know the back story, any official release? it was on a bretby boot lp wasn't it?
  11. It was massive at the 100 club at the same time.
  12. I can remember hearing this played at Keele, what's the story on this one Dave? I wasn't really into the scene at the time.
  13. hope you were taking the p Adey, the decline in quality of Beeb 2 directly coralates to its celebritfication
  14. got it from the library a couple o years back top read steve
  15. 3) do you think their are enough young people interested in the scene and if not what could we do to get young people involved? Many thanks. Kieran - nowhere near enough! - Northern soul needs to get away from the 6ts obsession that will inevetably kill the scene, move the scene onto to be more progressive and inclusive. Its not and never has been a 'retro' movement, the ideology is far more attractive and important than baggy trs and F wilson!

    sounds like a dooley's b side.
  17. I really love the 'what's happening stateside' budget album they put out in the 8ts, played it to death, loads of great cuts, garnet mimms, isleys, marv jonhson.

totally agree, he's got shite taste too, if i hear another mention of alice russell, jeez. Not always keen of trev nelsons picks but at least he's genuine.
  19. its not that bad, I like it in fact, can just imagine lou Rawls covering this on one of his capitol albums, it would be wayyyy beteer than this if he had done but not bad for a contemporary record, like the arrangement.
  20. derek, the other side is a massive and very classic break tune that is imense imho, not fit for a northern floor perhaps but outstanding in its own right.
  21. All due respect Steve but apart from really cheesy stuff like the snake ect its probably one of THE most played oldie's, its been absolutely played to death over the last 10, 20, 30. 40 years give or take, usually of 2nd issue's or pressings amitidly, great sound, just hammered.
  22. I didnt say played, just around, I can specifically recall the comment because I was so suprised myself.
  23. North's a state of mind rather than a geographical location.
  24. About 4 years ago a very close, older friend said 'I've always found record collecting somehow unrewarding, all those records, sut on a shelve'. It did my head in a bit the comment, got under my skin and basically having never organised shite all I decided to put on a soul night in my local town, it was good, the first few very busy, it grew and evolved a bit, I got to play the tunes, there was a purpose to collecting. Even though I'm not involved in soul nights directly anymore I still get to play bits of my collection and its nice feeling involved in something. collectors shape music, they form the tastes of wider society, the're important, and its just sad that Northern has always been so wound up in that exclusivity/ $$$$ thing that it really does feel like your getting nowhere, unless your super Ted or a handful of wizards with vast fortunes and castles in the sky. Paul it doesnt have to be that way, buy records, all sorts, god dam it even reissues! explore the limits of your taste, enjoy music and be free of that musical straight jacket known as soulocollectitus .
  25. very true, at least 7 inches are a handier size! lol.
