Mvp's Were A Black Soul Group....thanks Tabs
The Northern scene has always been about records that fitted the bill at the time , some being ultra soulful , many crass stompers , and some white artists that happened to sound right at the time .With the lyrical content and the fact that The M.V.P 's sounded different to a lot of other records at the time I can quite understand it's popularity , particularly as it's part of the sound track to " This England " , which would elevate this waxing to legendary status in many folks eyes .I wouldn't really care if I never heard it again , but with a lot of these records , they aren't just pieces of plastic , a lot of memories etc are tied up in them, and people can relate to them, rather like looking at an old photo , memories of a bygone era flood back .I don't think the black / white issue really comes into it , much of Gene McDaniels , Lenny Welch and even some of Ray Pollards sides veer close to M.O.R at times , as Cliff suggests , it's more a case of was it made as a Soul record [ Magnificent Men is a great example , they were obviously Soul fans .] It would be interesting to interview members of the group and find out what market they were aiming at .Best ,Eddie

Unbelievable show Mick , great records , and very informative chat in between .Great to hear a record dealer who is still really into the music like he was back in the day .Loved things like The Dynamics - Lonely man , and The Servicemen - Connie , plus Eddie Floyd and that Gospel side from yourself .Brilliant mate ,Best ,Eddie

Lost Soul
If you're still digging the music , then that's the main thing Mark , plus you never hear a crap record at home !! Must admit , with the internet ,you still feel involved in the scene even if you haven't been anywhere for a while , where as years ago I used to go crazy if I hadn't talked about Soul music to a like minded Soul for a while .Don't worry about it mate , do what you feel .Best wishes ,Eddie

Alternative Versions Of Soul & Northern Records
I picked up a Chris Farlow album the other week at a car boot " The art of " includes versions of Open the door to your heart , It was easier to hurt her [ Garnet Mimms ] , We're doing fine [ DD Warwick ] , I've been loving you too long [ Otis ] , Reach out I'll be there ,and What becomes of the brokenhearted .Open the door is pretty good and sounds like a duet [ PP Arnold ? ] to me , unless Chris is performing vocal gymnastics !! Record Finds In Peculiar Places
Not a record as such , but a few years ago my driving instructor told me that he was in a 60's beat group [ he also made stage clothes for Johnny Wilders Chicago Heatwave ] .What kind of songs did you play , originals or covers I asked ? " Well we used to do this song called " Fireman " which was a great song , but lyrically wasn't right as we were an all male band - don't suppose you know it do you ?, as I haven't heard it for years " His face was a picture when I took my Atlantic copy ' round his place to hear for the first time since the 60's .Wonder where he heard it first as it's a pretty obscure record isn't it by any standard .Interesting eh ? Best ,Eddie

Pointer Sisters Send Him Back Atlantic Demo
Thanks guys , the writing is red , so it's a boot .Only cost £1 tho' .Also got a nice white demo of Rosemary - Popcorn Wylie on Karen , which I think is a boot , but looks nice , and an Archer stamped Eddie Parker on Ashford for £1 each as well .Think the Eddie Parker is the 2nd release as the Archer stamp is small , and not raised .Also got a pile of other stuff for 50p including a Willie Kendrick " Change your ways " on Fox records.Obviously a boot / reissue , but when did this sneak out as I've never seen it before .It has Dean Courtney and The Carstairs [ sorry Pete !! ] on the flip side .Yes Pete Marrs Bar , see you on the 19th .Best ,Eddie

-
Start Of The Big Money Rarities
Wasn't Cigarette ashes - Jimmy Conwell one of the first big money records ? Sure I read in Dave Godin's column in B& S that someone , think it was Keith Minshull had paid around £80 for it , though that does sound a lot of money for the time [ early 70's ? ] Best ,Eddie
