ditto dave, stunning tune, actual b-side to rnb standard, remember weston coming back from the 100 club, having purchased roy's lp which includes this track.

Barbara Mercer-so Real
i suppose we could get into the debate of the different label designs and whose records are on what....but then we would get sidetracked!...the ronnie & robyn, embraceables appear in white & light turquois formats with a black bar across the top, sidra inserted in white letters and in a different font, whereas barbara, five of a kind and timmy willis appear on the plain background with sidra in bold letters....anyway, call on me/ so real IS without doubt, one of the finest double siders to be fortunately one of the cheapest bargains ever....and id say that just like everyone whose corresponded here, it really deserved to be a monster tune in its own right..ms. mercer also posessed a superb voice which appears on other labels/ under suedonyms ( lead vocals in groups ) i.e. embraceables, soulettes...if you wish to debate this as well, thats fine...imho its her on both of these productions.

i dont personally have this, i can only state that i have seen a pink issue, totally legit ( not coloured in with a felt pen! ), probably the rarest format though opinion may suggest the green...definitely the same logo

i second that emotion mate, a truely magnificent rollercoaster of a tune...it will always have its critics but to me it has all the elements required to establish a full dance floor...if it had secumbed to the bootleggers it would have been ground into the dust, but its acute rareity has been prevailent in protecting its status and long may that so be....

always does it for me pete, the intro & the fade out give the tune a unique twist...in between its full on detroit, yet, with a distinct difference, the bassline carries that tomangoes feel and the piano is almost honky tonk in, the instro break. remember well, hearing it at the casino, played under its suedonym...it just caught the imagination then...proof that amongst the pop paraphenalia and humdrum, digging a little deeper provided quality results, nonemoreso than in the hands of mr. searling, circa 78. i know you think that vicky baines sounds as if she was standing at the other end of the sink unit/echo chamber/studio when she cut country girl on may 17, 1966 but in a way it could easily be misconstrued as some latter day phil spector cast off, if anything it does have that aura of "niter tune" about it and as a subsequence, somewhat unfairly, dosnt get the recognition of the average crowd, not that their are particularly few copies of it....on the contrary, there appears to be quite a lot in circulation and hence, my belief that with its reputation it should be sharing more playlists.the nagging, incessent tambourine intro to heartaches, souveniers in metronomic time, leading into a hypnotic piano riff is pure essence of northern soul,..there's even a marimba lurking in there somewhere and adistinctly fragmented, edgy sax break,...so many unexpected ingredients!!, oh and lets not forget the monotone voice of mr. powell...it really pales into insignificance with such purile lyrics, but its all so predictably unpredictable,...thats why its a "does what it says on the tin" record.....and like the other two cohorts in this triumverate, it demands respect both as a dance floor winner, and a four figure aqquisition of prestige.

yes dear door lady, probably same for me....in my top three of all-time with vicky baines and william powell....and i bet a fair few on here will say they're all crap!!.....GO ON THEN.....CAN OF WORMS OR WHAT?

Cecil Washington
can i just say that if this record wont get you running to the dancefloor....uncle ted definitely will anyway am i right?...just as an aside to this..has anyone ever wondered why richard covered it up as joe matthews?......to me the musical structure is similar to the tamangoes.

Cecil Washington
i just love the way it leaps from 900 to 2k such a quality record......worth every penny of its assimilating value!!

Kings Hall - Windsor Suite

William Powell
dosnt everyone want one daz?, whoever won that got a bargain at that price when you consider what it has sold for in recent years. i know a lot of folk hate it, but to me it appeals because of its sparce production and the simple lyrics and equally simple, plaintive vocals

Dave Rivers In Hospital....any Update?
sorry chalky, havent looked for a couple of hours, hoping something would ensue, thanks for the briefing, if you hear anything else post up asap. gobsmacked......me and may were stting next to him when he was doing his set...he came on after me. we were having a laugh and joke and he seemed in good spirits and playing some blinding tunes...about 11.45 he just went without any warning, record still playing on the decks, lps about and singles box open, ted stepped in. may reckoned dave was sweating and looking for a drink, he said he felt sick. think he had some type of aural angina spray.....then he was gone. steff left a short while later. we think he must have called for an ambulence himself, he couldnt have driven, he seemed quite lucid given the circumstances and bearing in mind he knows what the warning signs are from the previous experience, he reacted quickly. anyway, we dont have a contact number so if you get any updates, keep us all in the picture. atb, rob

Was Wigan Casino Voted Billboard’S Best Disco In The World In1978?
last time i went would have been 79 so vicky baines, cecil washington, rita & the tiaras fits the bill though the latter may have been played a bit earlier, either way, these would have been top plays for richard.. i suppose stuff like william powell, the nurons, ike strong, rosie jones & mr.soul must have come just after. his 79 sets must also included a lot of new releases, such as tyrone barclay & roy dawson, though i honestly cant remember. one thing is for certain which im surw most of you will agree with, and with the greatest of repect to the other names mentioned, richard was at the helm of the thinking mans kind of tune whilst rw was just making up the numbers.

Anyone Seen One Of These Badges?
dunno about that steve, age-wise i just missed the torch & wheel ( would have been about 13 or 14 ) but obviously still at school and underage when went to the catacombs......and so were many others!, but im not an anorak on the badges...just that the quallty, colour and imagination that went into them, got better. i guess the image you posted up sums up what was felt people wanted at the time, to make a statement.....or, its certainly what chris thought...although the ulterior motive, of course, was to make money and he certainly did cash in there for a short period in our history. the badge is plain but essentially descriptive in that format.

Anyone Seen One Of These Badges?
chris was running the i.s.c., responsible also for the imfamous o.o.t.p. bootlegs which came in the wake of the success of both the torch & wheel. there had to be a demand for displaying allegiances as well as having the latest tunes, so there was a range of badges including i.s.c., right on, the catacombs etc. always thought that the black badge was classy & traditionalist as opposed to what looked run-of-the-mill. so at first they appeared on jacket pockets & collared t-shirts, eventually morphing to holdalls, by this time it would be mecca & wigan era, so there would be considerably more choice. think there were bagdes for va-vas & the pendulum, steam machine, top rank, hanley...later on heart of england soul club, yate, cleethorpes....and so on & so forth. there's probably far more knowledgeable people on the subject on here than me, but one things for certain, theyve always been collectable if not as valuable as vinyl....suppose that also applies to membership cards.

Anyone Seen One Of These Badges?
wasnt chris burton responsible for a lot of the badges at the time and not just the torch?
