  1. you know me & eulogies steve uncle ted loves em as well as mentioned here, lynn randell, paul anka and what about the tempests?...yes, some of em do float my boat
  2. we just accept it as part of our fabric. northern soul now is even more of a patchwork quilt with the inclusion of rnb, latin, popcorn, beat ballads and all manner of modern stuff and the proverbial pop record still features heavily...like a fine wine, some "white tunes" age better than others,...i dont, for instance, think any of the carolina's stuff, that has influenced the scene for a good many years now, has waned...very few black vocalists on many of the well known ones as we all know, maybe because in the main, they're all frantic uptempo offerings. does it really come down to drawing the line,...and lets get to the crux of the matter here, where U.K. releases are concerned...about a different country having a go at mimicking good ole' U.S. of A.?. because, prior to the advent of motown, what did we really have here?....simples,...POP,..which was trying to find a direction after exhausting rock n roll. then the beatles came back from their first tour exhalting this "new black sound" thatwas sweeping america...and everyone and his dog wanted to make their sound upbeat and hip. and i suppose the djs back then also decided that they'd supplement their record playboxes which had such a limited quantitiy of american imports with british fillers, groups and artists aping the sounds from across the water...eventually they started writing their own compositions...so those lads in barrow-in-furness gave us the cbs collectable "you dont mean it" and sue lynn squeeled, "dont pity me",...then the eurovision also-ran spouted "9 times out of 10". in the states celeb white artists jumped on the black bandwagon hoping for a belated hit, but fortunately for us in blighty, they presented us with some quality tunes that still fit the bill. we accept it for what it is....part of our fabric...northernsoul is the only music phenomenon to embrace a kaleidescope of influences...would the scene have burnt out had we relied only on black imports?...who's to say. some will say that the scene is shagged out now, but there are generations emerging out there, who are seeing this music for what it is and what it represents, and to understand northern soul and its beginnings is to understand how pop music has been an underlying driving force in where its got today.
  3. dave, i miss his posts as well mate, even though i wouldn't know him from adam, very intuitive, knowledgeable, pronounced and well respected amongst everyone on here i'd say....
  4. pete,....can i be referee here? soulsource stagnating??,...naw,......this is fabulous saturday afternoon entertainment!! beats the shite served up on telly,...C'MON EVERYBODY, LETS ALL HAVE A BIT OF KEYPAD FISTICUFFS!! dont you just love these icons?
  5. sorry for any confusion there chalky, i wasnt referring in paticular to the mello souls being played in 02...seems like it was that year to me though, shifty had it, played it at the ritz, never heard it before....staggering. with regards to margaret little, definitely played FIRST at the ritz by sam, only just had it off des parker, this IS a fact as i was there when it was played, it caused a sensation!...i promptly photographed it on the decks...the following week sam played it at the very last lea manor all-nighter...i'll check dave rimmer's dates...it'll probably turn out to be 2003 because he posted the entire playlist for THAT night on his website...incidentally thats the one i compiled.
  6. oh yeah?, find me one then!
  7. aye up you barsssssssstard!, you kept your name off the page to wind me up....didnt you? and NO........im not selling it you! :P
  8. like i said pete, never even knew it was a reissue, but til i got my copy, i didnt even realise it was on rampart, having only ever seen linda copies, therefore i presume its harder to find....you would have thought there would be MORE copies because its a well known label and being a reissue but it dosnt necessarily follow suit especially if it STILL sold zilch and whatever originally existed, got trashed.
  9. I WANT YOUR MAMA JULIE.......PLEASE??
  10. well, there you go dave, you live and learn!...i wouldn't have thought that but the soulsource school of wizards strikes again!! ....and wow!, to set eyes on an issue as well...suppose it had to exist based on the fact its a well known label and so is the record. whilst it may be a reissue, i think its rarer than the linda release, basically because you see more copies of the 65 release come up at auction, whereas the rampart release just dosnt. its plain the warner bros issue was edited.....how can someone possibly think that the intro was "dated"?, it sets you up for the dancefloor, you know just what is coming!.
  11. are we saying here, that we like the majestics because the band name rolls off the tongue easier and because the label is far more attractive in both its yellow and pink formats?,...because as far as the recording itself is concerned, there is no differential between these and the rampart release, with the exception of the warners release, which of course, is shortened...they're all highly collectable anyway!!
  12. i have a rampart demo, never seen an issue but wouldn't rule it out, orange or blue...most definitely the rampart release is the rarest of all formats and, of course, so much better with the intro as for who they are, its obvious they're one and the same...at least same vocals you hear.
  13. ditto, friday just gone, bob was his usuual awesome self at lowton and barry maleady as well, always had quality tunes and reads the dancefloor brilliantly. enjoyed reading all the previous....butch, richard, sam & ady...those fabulous rca acetates....greatest nighter for me, north v south pitching up against each other.....rarest of the rare at the ritz, 2002...mick smith, shifty, carl willingham, adey, butch, andy rix and those northerners...ee by gum!! first time out for margaret little & the mello souls.....even now, top tuneage being spun in the windsor suite and some big guns sitting on the back wall tapping their feet, including uncle ted who is one mean honcho behind the decks!.
  14. got to be honest martin, the sleevenotes are all identicle in each cd, basically because it was about the fact that original backing tracks were being used for the first time anywhere in the world on a karaoke cd, and with the blessing of universal...they were all about trumpeting that fact, as opposed to indepth details about the creators of the music, i know that this will probably result in head shaking again, yet another missed opportunity, but in contrast to that, the punter was getting the genuine article minus the familiar voices...so you get to hear earl, james and benny at work, displaying their unique talents....nonemoreso than on "nowhere to run"...outstanding workmanship and miles better than the seeburg spotlight band. you know....i dont know if theyre available anymore, as they were never issued here...ive got all twelve.....the only thing missing from the complete set is the limited edition jukebox which you could put them in, complete with the motown logo on the front. record collector did a big article on the promotion at the time, thats how i got to purchase them.
  15. of course the genuine backing track turned up almost 10 years ago now, on a set of karaoke cds issued by singing machine out of miami, florida...import only....i remember richard telling me he found the complete set of them in a walmart whilst on holiday!,...thats where "nowhere to run" came from....when richard heard it he totally flipped....also includes this old heart of mine, shake me, get ready etc...just a shame it took forty years for these to materialise, nevertherless we have harry weinger, motown's emminent historian to thank for putting the record straight.
  16. chalky, is this actually an lp by the group, doing cover versions of other artists songs?, thats the way it reads to me....in other words, not a various artists comp, therefore, a GENUINE lp?.....im trying to get to the point that if you were to actually play it out, its the next best thing to having an original single.
  17. thuoght i was right about the label ( plexium ), it has just recently been in sales, whoever was selling it wanted £35. honestly, you guys know more than me. didnt sound like it was a mfp type of album and i wouldnt have figured it was one of those totp albums either....sounded like a genuine u.k. issue. was discussing this with j.p. & ginger at the kings on saturday....the grand prix release is obviously a different kettle of fish, valuewise, i believe £350-400 for a copy...if it is a budget lp, surely it still has to be considered a genuine first release here as opposed to the soulgoldmine one?,...especially as in 1971 there wouldnt be any compilation under the banner of northern soul..technically speaking...the seller did state 60's lp though.
  18. please correct me if im wrong, but did i not see, for sale on here in the last 3 weeks approx a u.k. lp ( original 60's ) featuring "these things " by the blue sharks?...who was selling it and do they still have it? ive scanned at least 16 pages going back to the beginning of last month and i cant see it.
  19. the "chills n' fever" man?, what a great club tune that was in its day....another unsung hero joins the heavenly choir.
  20. SPOIL SPORT!!
  21. SO IS ANYONE GOING TO PUT UP A SCAN OF THE U.K. OLIVE GREEN DEMO? COME ON ANORAKS......YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!
  22. hats off to you andy, that is a truly breathtakingly, staggering read, adding colour and gloss to what we mearly percieved was the story. if ever there was an inclination for a biopic, this is it, right here, right now.
  23. i would say, that of all the commercial recordings he was responsible for at motown, that gave him his biggest u.k. success, "stoned love" was probably the one....reaching #2 on the british charts...but of course his involvment went way back to 64/65 so he really dedicated a large slice of his life and effort to the corporation...i bristle with emotional anticipation at the reception his eponymous offering is going to get at stoke on october 6th...i imagine i wont be the only one...
  24. in total agreement mark, a pivotal moment for the scene, a landmark discovery that has driven its own stellar value and its own feted storyline and, as is usually the case, the instigator knew not of its existance or subsequent popularity.....it could have been a film......bet frank's smiling thinking of that prospect!
  25. truly one of the greatest songwriter/producers the world has ever known, an absolute colossus at motown with a phenomenal repetoire and the man who gave us possibly the most universally known northern soul anthem of all-time " do i love you"....for that frank, indeed we do....god rest your wonderful soul.
