Northern Soul Top 500 Rareities
LOOK,....apologies to all if its already been done, but its a bank holiday and i suppose a good many of us are bored, not gone anywhere, hence we're on soul source chewing the cud over "gently" last night, so here's the rub.....id like to see the dj's, collectors and all round know-it-alls get their comprehensive heads together and come up with a definitive format. shall we use a yardstick of rareity OVER value,as, in this day and age, there are records that simply dont have a reliable valuation as no one knows how many copies really exist. im pretty sure it would also make a very good book, sitting snuggly on the shelf next to the already acclaimed "most popular" gospel. suppose for starters MELLO SOULS is up there.....just another 499 to go then....any takers? WELL IT BEATS LISTENING TO GOLD'S TOP 1000 POP RECORDS OF ALL-TIME DOSNT IT?

over 150 replies?.......SO YOU DIDNT WATCH IT?.....DID YOU?.......YEAH RIGHT!!....BET AUNTIE BEEB IS WELL PLEASED WITH THE VIEWING FIGURES!.....WHAT HARM HAS IT DONE?......NOWT....i didnt just have a good chuckle at it, ive laughed even more at some of the off the cuff, off subject comments here from the light hearted relief brigade as opposed to the flesh-on-the-bones theorists who need to lighten up before the coffin lids start banging

definitely a boring sunday in every sense of the word....except for this, because if you watched & liked it or not......IT GOT PEOPLE'S ATTENTION, DIDNT IT?....yes, it was a detective series that unless you're anorak for that type of thing, you wouldnt entertain, probably chosing a film or some documentary instead....but BECAUSE it had those magical little words "NORTHERN SOUL" attached to its plot....it was a case of..OOOH,...WHATS THIS THEN?.....be honest with yourselves.....you couldnt,...could you?......you just had to have a sneaky look. of course from the perspective of accuracy it was flawed.....BUT WHO'S BOTHERED??...ITS A TV DRAMA SET IN THE 60'S...it just so happened that this episode was written with the idea of a dancehall that just so happened to cater for a 60's soul clientel, as a backdrop for a murder case entangled in racism. i suggest its necessary to let your imagination run wild where the "northern soul" element is interpretated...just pretend fw is just another record, the same as everything else, same goes for the clothes, dance moves, record prices etc...its artistic license from our standpoint as well....yes?. i happen to like watching this series, because its set in the north, but moreso because its plots are significantly more convincing than t'other copper drama on itv...and i loved the fact that the program didnt send us up because the "soul" wasnt the centrefugal point of the storyline. the producers of this drama have to keep dreaming up interesting & realistic storylines ( and it is an original idea to use a sensible music style ) for it to have such successful viewing figures......and,....think on it.......last night's would have attracted considerably more than normal...am i right?.

dear lady, i dont mind if you're on the vino so long as its a nice quality that cost you a few bob and not some shoddy cheap stuff that gives you a thumping headache! even better if you're drinking it whilst watching another ripping detective yarn set in good old blighty....and this series is infinitely better than heartbeat which, quite frankly incorperated cornation street style comedy....having said that,.....the former did feature sliced tomatoes in one episode, though they weren't exactly back droppin' on t'moor

ditto paul, just scratching my head about that as i was aware dave myers is 12 years older than si,....but perhaps he did just about catch the tail-end of the casino, albeit as a 14/15 year old....which aint necessarily unreasonable as during the course of its existance, the venue probably turned a blind eye to a good many underaged soulies...its about heads in and the cash tills ringing. perhaps the tin hat brigade amongst us are long overdue a raincheck....everytime something visual wants to pay homage quite unintentionally to "our culture", its run for the air raid shelter...just cut some slack please??? be open minded, enlightened and enjoy a good old nostalgic view of a straight laced copper and his hip sidekick...and just imagine what it must have been like to have been in on the fledgling scene right at the very start....i missed out by about 4 years, but so did a good many other stalwarts my age.....and i dont necessarily read any of the 60 somethings bleating about the intrusion here, so all well & good!

Janus - (Label Of The Week)
this the same group as on mutt etc.?
-
Janus - (Label Of The Week)
stunning tune!, henry atkinson introduced me to this and i notice its subsequent value is justified although it really should be pushed by some of the big names to get the recognition it deserves....their stuff on yew is good as well.
-
Janus - (Label Of The Week)
always quoted as one of the few things he was worthy of having played himself, and a record a good many actually like, proper all-niterspin and would definitely go now....picked up a minter off tim last year after not having heard it for years and it really is very catchy, plus it commands a reasonable price.

Chicago Soul Icon Carl Davis Passes On
i'll second that...dave, i think we're all magnanimous in our view that yours is a lovingly devoted overview of a fabled & feted son of this wonderfully exuberant music that embues our minds & souls. god bless you carl, a revered guiding light, an arch exponent of afro-american free expressionism, but above all else, a pied piper to the dancefloor....and to you dave, your thesis on the man is compellingly exemplified...i salute you sir.

Save The Twisted Wheel
that must be a fantastic outcome for all concerned, but it must also appear as an unexpected surprise as well,...the fact that the developers have recognised the importance and significance of this venue in a wider context only goes to show that respecting people's views and feelings is paramount and thus the numbing effect of the club's loss is tempered with the revelation that its inner heart will be preserved for posterity, wether in the confines of the new struture or deposited on a new site. what is for certain, is that the memory of its existance will never be diminished.

Dirty Secrets: Which "oldie" Will You Never Ever Get Sick Of?
TAMANGOES.....................................SSSSSSHHHHH!!!,.....is that the sound of 2000 feet running to the dancefloor? that bass intro, that tight on the fours beat, that pleading demeanour in the vocal, those crashing horns....its supreme rarity value,....its "2 & half minutes" of,...man, you're like, on another planet....the realisation that richard chose to cover up cecil washington as joe matthews instead of.............wow!

Dj's I Wanna Hear Out More At Allnighters
rarest of the rare, may day bank holiday all-nighters at the ritz WERE BEYOND COMPARE...thanks to richard.....infact probably the best four years i experienced on the nighter scene along with the 100 club, were at the ritz....hairs on the back of your neck stuff!. im totally thrilled with the comments of chalky, marc & carms...guess we're all rowing the same boat here...i firmly believe we're gonna see this man making a defining impact on the scene again. i hope adey gets him darn sarf at some point soon..i dont think he'll refuse it, despite the fact he's full on with the promotions.....you cant knock him there either...his choice of venues for his events are of supreme taste and quality, the flagship of which is now firmly the dunkenhalgh hotel in accrington and although thats just my opinion, i'll put it ahead of the king george's basically because you can get your head down as well in some luxury. i remember when the management at walsall town hall booked a northern soul night on a thursday evening in 1978. richard & dave evison came down to the midlands with a full 52 seater coach....on a thursday evening!!?,....600 people in the building...yeah, that was back in the day but he was in majestic mode then and...logic suggests he'll still do it now...you know we talk about who's a great draw to see live wether in concert or p.a. at a soul gig and we're drippin' saliva at the prospect of the vibrations at prestatyn...there are great djs and.....GREAT DJS...its not pretty when i say catagorizing people's ability is like a league pyramid...i refer to jouneymen/women who are doing a fantastic job to support our scene, to travel around the uk at their own expense, who give their time unselfishly and, in most cases freely...without them crate diggin' for a kaleidescope of tunes that fuel the interest, we would have run out of steam long before we had clocked up over four decades...we have figureheads.....these are the people who started the revolution....and most are still with us, plying their trade with undiminished enthusiasm...RICHARD IS a watchword for the truth about how soulful our music is, a visionary who has propelled the scene forward as every year has gone by, by introducing us to more modern tunes that fit the groove, whilst still displaying a propensity for the 60's ethos, never forgetting his roots and reminding us all of our mantra, to keep on keeping the faith, to say right on brother/sister and mean it heart & soul, and stating that it's whats in the groove that counts...THERE ISNT AN ALL-NIGHTER ON THE PLANET THAT WOULDNT BE ENHANCED THAN ONE WITH RICHARD SEARLING HOLDING COURT.

-
Dj's I Wanna Hear Out More At Allnighters
adey, get him on mate, because im emphasizing he's up for it, this man has grasped the nettle again and you know only too well, he will take the dancefloor apart....im sure the 100 club is a challenge akin to his desire to play the twisted wheel, which came to fruition after many years...im also sure he'll find the offer too good to resist.
-
Dj's I Wanna Hear Out More At Allnighters
yet another one on here, quoting it RIGHT....as was the header " djs you want to see out more at all-nighters...AND LET NOBODY MISUNDERSTAND... richard searling IS capable of playing a set at ANY NIGHTER, it dosnt have to be oldies...HE IS imaginative, HE DOES READ THE CROWD, HE KNOWS WHAT RECORDS ARE SUITED, WHERE....AND HE TAUGHT ALL,...AND I MEAN ALL OF US ABOUT WHAT QUALITY SOUL MUSIC IS....does anyone, with any sense on here, SERIOUSLY THINK he cant cut it?,...i despair at cloud cuckooland mentality.

Gods Gift To Woman
jordi lad, you cannot be serious?....HOW can you possibly....SPEND TIME AWAY from the scene?..come on guy, outside of reality ( the scene ) the world is totally alien, corrupt of talent musically and so claustophobically boring...you're a top bloke, why dont you influence the people around you, turn their heads...perhaps if they look up to you, they might surprise you and actually get a kick out of the music you introduce them to....and in turn you can show them this.....anyway, get yourself back on track, smart bloke,...you're far too level headed to be part-timin'.

Trips - Bring It Back (Victoria)
quality tune, west coast, ripe for today...i was in the same boat last year,.....wow!, gotta have one of those ( even though its been around for donks ), subsequently did, courtesy of mr. manship...appears to still be relatively cheap...but like all good things, once it gets noticed, the supply dries up....in the crossover mould really, but suits both rooms...just needs the big tickets to really push it, as it deserves it.
