  1. thats a fair comment russ, as would anyone else's be on here...airing on the side of caution perhaps with wistful optimism thrown in?...i'd hold on to your hats everybody because, if you've not been paying attention, he is quietly and very inconspicously going about putting together an awe-inspiring playbox, which was witnessed by many at the dunk on sunday...but i can assure you, knowing the man as i do...it isnt stopping there...he's always had it in the blood...he's always been completely wired to the scene....he knows what the movers & shakers are...and, if he hasn't already got it, he's sniffing out the acutely rare and quality tunes that he has always been internationally known for....he's chasing down a lot of stuff that he originally sold ( i presume he means things that he rashly sold back in the day ). dont be surprised to see him fronting venues that you never dreamed he would appear at...this man is flexing his muscles again....remember this:...HE was the backbone of the casino in its heyday...with john anderson as an outlet for groundbreaking music and richard's capacity for, not only mesmerising but influencing many subsequent headline djs of today, he drove that monolith of northern soul forward with profound credibility, whilst at its helm, preaching quality over innanely, adverse pop dogma that was being pedalled as soul. be optimistic.....the arch crusader is on the march again!!
  2. tremendous tune bro, been around for years, remember its association with the catacombs...thats how long it goes back, yet even i naively, was unaware of its significance with reference to bob babbitt....well, no-one would...would they?.....the complete anorak probably didnt exist til about 20 years ago...such a very strong detroit production though.
  3. mr. searling....because, believe it or not...this man has took a back seat, stood in the shade and watched everyone else take centre stage for many years now, but unbeknownst to us all, he's just kidding!....THE MAN has STILL got the tunes and thats with reference many times ( tongue in cheek ) to whats lurking in his garage...he pulled a box of spellbinding tunes to the table at the dunkenhalgh yesterday that would knock many into a cocked hat...he's STILL got the charisma and magnetism to get people's attention and spell it out to them,...just like he did at wigan all those years ago...so you can produce a list as long as your arm....and i say that with the greatest respect to the whole panorama of djs i have got see see, listen to & befriend...all unique and justified in their own appeal...but, people.......richard can quite simply turn it on, when he wants...the man is a hero & a legend...and those are words not to be taken lightly...put him at the top of the list of any respected all-nighter and he will deliver the goods in spades! .
  4. agree with that, must have still been covered up when mick derry was playing it at places like the wulfrun hall & locarno all-dayers, circa 77/78

  8. spot on bro, and like i said, these aint boots..they're legit second issues
  9. sean chapman has one and bob hinsley,however......soul sam had a legit 2nd issue for sale last week....so, the so-called bootlegs actually aren't...£80 it was and i also know sean has the same one on his sales lists...believe me, even these copies are bloody hard to find.....so much so that the price has rocketed,....but an espanola/blue lettering is gonna set you back at least 4 figures...or thats the general concensus of opinion.
  10. i agree with you as well chalx, the isley bros appeared on a four track boot with barbara mcnair - it happens every time, marvin gaye - sweet thing & the temp's - ive gotta find a way....but not seen a forever on a boot at all
  11. correct mr.dewhirst, all the reputable edicts state this fact....it was primarily an lp track, though just how good it was in the eyes of those in the seat of power and their incomprehensible ability to have blindsided it for a quite staggering period of time, will forever be an unanswerable question....the execs did however have the good grace to pay attention to the beckoning of the people who really matter......the record buying public of 1970
  12. ian, just quoting what is dictated in the bartlette publication which is a good many years older then our british representation, the ere were OVER 40 TAKES, so its highly likely knowing what we know about the well being of jamerson, that HE would have featured during this strung out labour of love, but perhaps we can summise that he must have had a bad day and didnt show at the final cut, hence bob babbitt plays on it and gets the credit, fully deserved of course....its also in black and white that this record did not appear on vinyl until 1970 despite the track being over 3 years old...and became the hit that it did off the back of its popularity in the clubs here, only when berry gordy was made aware of this fact did he wake up to the possibility of an unforeseen moneyspinner......good job he did, smokey may never have realised a number 1 and the subsequent re-releases of other tracks that charted here giving him belated fame that he had fought hard for in the 60's.
  13. well, the information you have all read, concerning bob babbitt, is that in fact it WAS him on toac....how can this possibly be a confusing issue people?? ....its listed in his official discography 1970....toac was released in the states 09/24/1970 on tamla54199A...released in uk on 9/11/1970. it was originally recorded 09/11/1966...the remix dates are unknown. quote from bartlette publishing " off the record" "SEVERAL DIFFERENT TAKES OF THE SONG ARE IN CIRCULATION, THE MONO EDITION OF THE LP FOR EXAMPLE FEATURING AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT VERSION TO THE FAMILIAR STEREO SINGLE". toac appeared on the lp "MAKE IT HAPPEN" in august, 1967, feb 1968 in the uk...it is motown's 4th best selling single...EVER! the reason it took til 1970 was quite simply because berry gordy overlooked it, it wasnt squirreled away in the vaults, it was on a legit lp and nobody paid any attention... according to terry wilson's book; tamla motown, the stories behind the singles, james jamerson's trademark jams are on it, so that adds another dimension to the requisite that it took 40 takes to get the track how smokey wanted it. IF ITS A RUMOUR, THEN LETS SQUASH IT NOW,...ACCORDING TO ALL RELEVANT INFORMATION..NOBODY ELSE WAS INVOLVED IN THE BASSLINE OF THIS SONG...ITS IN BLACK & WHITE THAT BOB BABBITT PERFORMED ON IT AND THAT THERE WAS ALSO INVOLVEMENT FROM JAMERSON.

  16. spoken like an accomplished professional that you are, lorraine. have you read the obituary in the dfp? bet you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife at pied piper, it must have bristled with electricity when these guys were around....wonder how jack, eddie & joe are taking it?, probably never see them on these shore again...just so privilaged and humbled that we saw them perform at the apollo and then the festival hall, the following year...ironic that within 7 days of that concert, joe hunter passed away...got to shake his hand, have a chat and take his picture...for the last time. im sure that you would express on all our behalf, this side of the pond, our sincere condolences to bob's relatives. take care soul sister.
  17. dont understate it mick, MOTOWN...IS the yardstick by which all other musical influences & tastes, stand or fall....with you all the way on this one bro.
  18. i have to say,may and i were very fortunate that particular january evening, in that we waited behind in the auditorium. i had with me weldon mcdougall's book...i asked alan slutsky if he would ask the brothers if they would oblige us with their autographs....moments later he came back, job done...we have a treasured memory...its hard even now to come to terms with the fact that 3 of the 6 have passed over since then.....as we say, the only certainty in life is death....but the historical documents that bob and the other guys bestowed on the world, will never die, their music will be like the stars...eternal.
  19. absolutely andy, looking forward to what you've got on the menu as well mate, going to be a very diverse session that may even stop people from wandering in and out just incase they miss something...well thats the plan!
  20. intrigues - im gonna love you - yew bobby patterson - right on jody - paula dee dee warwick - where is that rainbow - mercury lp les mccann - strange little girl - limelight lp irene & the scotts - why do you treat me like you do - smash had "rainbow" on a 7", never knew it was completely different from the lp cut, difference in year of production as well atmospheric & sublimnal lyrics plus the heart wrenching chorus in the hands of a "to die for" diva every day a copy of bobby patterson appears on here......so unbelievably cheap...so unerringly brilliant...why its not mega bucks is beyond me...perhaps the vinyl well hasnt dried up enough yet. irene & the scotts......well, sadly weve just been told about the loss of one of the accredited writers of this double a-sided masterpiece, robert kreinar ( bob babbitt ) along with micheal & raymond of " man without a woman" fame. you wouldn't put it past bob playing bass on this one as well!. lots of talk on here recently as well about les mccann, this penchant in recent years for latino grooves is well founded, born off the back of totw's noteriety for all manner of soulful expression...time for another blast. intrigues...least known or easy to find of their yew recordings, yet not stupidly expensive it would seem, great crossover track with a philadelphian feel to it...and they went on to cut the wonderful "fly now, pay later" but thats another story..
  21. would this happen to be the same tune butch was playing at the 100 club some ten years ago now? titled " they are sayin", if it is, what a stonker! oh,...and any chance of a copy of ellie greenwich please somebody?
  22. robert kreinar aka bob babbitt, who stepped up to the plate as the prime alternative to jamerson, who even in the great man's shadow, accredited himself to a jewel encrusted plethora of motown anthems and a myriad of moonlighting sessions that are interwoven into our northern soul scene. i can say it was a privilage to have witnessed this great man display his unwavering talent and ability firsthand at the carling apollo in manchester some 8 years ago now, a display jointly with his fellow funk brothers that i will never forget. the abiding memory is that his contribution to popular music was finally recognised after over 4 decades in anonimity...finally achieving the spotlight he so richly deserved. there's a great rythmn section being put together upstairs.....one day we'll ALL get to see them perform. god rest your soul bob babbitt, funk brother
  23. definitely colin, an inspiration to generations...richard searling, who always strives to broaden the boundaries of quality soul new & old, ian levine, an original pioneer who bridged the gap between here and the states and unloaded a wealth of tunes on the unsuspecting and naive northern soul ear in its infancy. and when the dust had settled on the "nero fiddled as rome burned" wigan epoch, butch, keb and guy taking up the mantle of preservation and mutual sanity at the helm of totw with a host of other likeminded connoiseurs in tow. pep & soul sam, for being individualistic both in persona and playlists, the latter to this day, still considered a man of his own mind and opinion whose choice of records on the whole have gone against the grain...and not to the detriment of the scene.....AND after the dust HAS settled....colin's still standing, never had to reinvent himself....still original to the bone...and still on the eternal odyssey of discovery, to bring the best music to the attention of an appreciative and broadminded audience.
