Black Vs. White Cont....right Of Reply
agreed dave, i think our brother chalky's missing the point here, any "debate" dissapated at the outset. the truth is, its completely ridiculous that we should be laughing at the slanging match thats playing out here, any outsider looking in would reason that this thread is the perfect breeding ground for airing long standing, deep-seated grudges against each other...or is it a smoke screen,...playing off each other to drag more gullible soulies into this negative rhetoric? CHALKY......AS THE MODERATOR, YOU ARE IN THE POSITION RIGHT NOW TO CALL A HALT TO IT, SO WHY DONT YOU?? AND I MOST CERTAINLY WOULDNT QUESTION DAVE'S JOURNALISTIC WIT, HIS OBSERVATIONS, TO MANY ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR , THEY ARE QUICK, SHARP AND TO THE POINT AND UNLIKE THIS THREAD, HE AINT TRYING TO "VIRTUALLY" THROTTLE ANYBODY

Black Vs. White Cont....right Of Reply
cant quite believe ive read all this vitriol from grown adults who profess to love the same music as me. life's too short ( PARTICULARLY WHERE A LARGE PROPORTION OF US ARE CONCERNED ) to be worrying about identity/ethnicity/catergorization of what we've grown up with for 3/4 decades....that debacle began in the 70's with the northern/modern clashes......wigan/mecca....and look where that got us.......BOTH VENUES LONG GONE.....and we're still here. the black and white scenario was also part of that as well, but is it REALLY necessary to drag it through the wringer when we're approaching doteage/pension age?...do we REALLY want to be taking this arguement to/be driven to our graves....FOR GOD'S SAKE, CANT ALL PARTIES JUST BURY THE HATCHETT, LIVE WHAT LIFE YOU HAVE LEFT ENJOYING REAL MUSIC, FAR REMOVED FROM WHAT THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD HAS TO OFFER....REMEMBER THAT YOUR SAVIOUR AND YOUR SANITY WAS THE SCENE,....YOU JOINED THIS ESCAPIST MOVEMENT FOR PRECISELY THAT REASON....TO ESCAPE THE BORING MUNDANE WORLD OF REALITY....WHY KEEP SQUABBLING OVER ORIGINALITY?...ISNT THE MANTRA " ITS WHATS IN THE GROOVE THAT COUNTS" OR "ITS JUST GOT THE RIGHT BEAT"....BOTH QUOTES RELEVANT TO BLACK AND WHITE SOUNDS AND BOTH SOUNDS DOVETAILED TO CREATE THE MUSICAL KALIEDESCOPE THAT IS OUR BELOVED NORTHERN SOUL SCENE.... now please, get back to the bigger picture, call a truce, shake hands and get on with talking about things that you really enjoy.

Value Please Saxie Russell
THE CATACOMBS ANTHEM!!.......£150 is tops id guess as well, MAX had a mispelt one off richard domar, according to tim, domar had quite a few of them at one point but they are extremely rare....infact i think tim's is a mis-spelt one as well. i had a demo off him for £60 about 4 years ago......and of course, with relation to me and the catacombs.....ITS A "HEAD THE BEAM" RECORD!!

Love Is Like An Itching... Funk Bros Instr
concur, no legit release but due to the demand, it did get "carved" in a small run , about 6 years ago ( maybe as little as 30-40 copies ) with chris clark's "something's wrong on the b-side. taken in proper context its should be listened to on the "standing in the shadows of motown" award winning double cd....some other great backing tracks on there including the great crossover "for once in my life " minus stevie's vocals.....you can hear all the instruments in crystal clear definition highlighted by jamerson's awesome bass work. dont know if they'rs still available but its also worth checking out the motown karoake cds which you could find in wallmart (asda) in the states about 8 years ago,...maybe they're still online....distributed by "the singing machine" out of florida....they even produced a limited run miniature wurlitzer with the motown logo mounted on the front!!. "love is an itching" is still a guarenteed floopacker as is the cd only, unedited version of "nowhere to run"......again with that fabulous jamerson hook

Dave Hamilton's Detroit Soul - What A Great Cd
here, here dave, good quality releases are few and far between these days and the vast majority worth buying, are usually via kent. weve come to reason that a large proportion of the really top notch anthems have happened in the last decade, unreleased material, every bit as good as the stompers weve witnessed over the previous 3, that were legitimate releases and its been ace/kent at the forefront....too right its driven the scene onwards and attracted more newcomers to our cause and, as you said, long may it continue.....my one impending hope is that the deadlock with the owners of the rca catalogue can be resolved and we get vol.3 before we're pushing up daisies.

Dave Hamilton's Detroit Soul - What A Great Cd
gilly, firstly i have to say that the series of topper cd's you have been involved in with ady have been most invaluable in educating myself better about the music of detroit and exactly who the talented musicians were, who were responsible for these wonderful tunes that have enhanced our scene, particularly in the last decade. although i havent heard or bought this latest offering, i know there is a genuine and obvious need, not just from the point of view of adding to the saga, but the legitmate fact that by doing so, i like many others will have contributed to the upkeep of a family whose head has passed before, unlike so many other unsung hero's of ours who never got the unique opportunity that dave hamilton's family are now experiencing, god bless them. i am sure they feel the same way to you, the fact you showed such a valued interest in their fathers work and as a result, it has payed off both financially and historically...they have the satisfaction of knowing what he did was not all in vein and weare the recievers of a musical catalogue, unearthed by your determination and perseverence, that would have laid unknown and uncharted but instead, has given up a wealth of masterpeices to grace both our hifi's and our dancefloors. i for one, certainly hope this is NOT the last of the material both you and ady have been researching...i believe you must feel like you are on a wonderful oddessy, a voyage of discovery and at the same time you must feel great satisfaction that you are doing something that benefits others greatly,...if anything, the liner notes that you set out in the very first cd 10 years ago/, say it all, through what you have achieved in their's and dave hamilton's name, you've also earned a great love and affection and you in turn, have given that back. i love everything ady puts out BECAUSE of the effort that has gone into the products....too many same ole, same ole, rehashes to mention, thats why anything kent has to offer is worth savouring and that also includes what mr. rounce contributes, lest i forget. i would imagine for you personally, TOPPER has been a holy grail and for collectors of the vinyl, likewise as prices reflect. it was announced as the last great undiscovered label of detroit...how right was that prophesy?, 10 years on, we are still discovering the truth and our minds are being opened and broadened like never before....perhaps one day ady's other burning desire ( or should that be mine? ) of completing the rca quest, will be realised, but thats another story!. anyway, think ive done enough of the rambling now , so thanks for the treasures untold mate and lets hope they wont be the last. rob.

Detroit Land Apples
just had a conversation with the oracle mate, it seems this group would more than likely, just be session musicians. the bootleg if you are acquainted, was quality vinyl as opposed to soussan's trademark styrene and turned up circa, 76/77 alonside yvonne baker and the magicians/ servicemen amongst others and were convincing look-a-likes. apparently, john anderson was responsible for the detroit landapples. as for it being detroit, as logged in kieth rylatts book of last year, that could be contentious as well, bearing in mind that the song writer is listed as one george soul (e). the possibility of two g.s's existing at the same time? the more prominent one of course, is a famed southern soul icon ( alabama ) and if it is indeed one AND the same on this production the it is in the same boat as g.davis & r. tyler......a southern soul record with absolutely nothing to do with detroit.....its open to debate for "oracle" see: tim brown

Guy Hennigans Stafford Biggies,1987
remember guy playing the wheatsheaf in walsall during 80's, ( first time i ever heard JACKIE DAY - NAUGHT BOY ) and the black horse on thompson avenue when mart bradley ran it in early y2k. organised a couple of gigs myself and put guy on, still has some remarkable tunes and dont forget those instrumentals....such as BACKSTREET - DETROIT RYTHMN SECTION and SWEETER THAN THE DAY BEFORE. distinctly remember having a good gasp at this one-off acetate. some of the piccys taken in the last decade made me chuckle as i thought he looked a bit like robin hood ( if you dressed him up in that manner of speaking!! )...bit of a soul "bandit" then eh? do we all think perhaps, that mr. hennigan could be called THE ALL-TIME MASTER OF COVER-UPS?

Gil Scott-Heron RIP
we wake up again to find we have lost another uniquely articulate and talented musician, who, at one time or another, has influenced our lives through his provocative and justified statements. we found great pleasure in dancing to these tracks, most iconic of all being the bottle, yet we gained a profound understanding of the lyrics he put down and as a consequence, realized a greater overview of our world socially and politically. gil scott heron's output is rightly, critically acclaimed...in our lifetime's and generations to come, his contribution will be a yardstick by which other young, enthusiastic, talented musicians aspirations will be measured....its already happening and will continue to do so. be at peace brother.

Guardian - Motown Musical And Marvin Gaye Film
you know mike, it seems somewhat contrite of mr. gordy to believe someone ISNT going to do it long after he's rolled over so, bearing in mind NO-ONE lives forever, why dosnt he just embrace it and face facts that hanging out some dirty linen in the process REALLY isnt going to cause any great reverberations decades after they supposedly took place. he cant turn back the clock and put right what he fears even if it was possible and who on earth really cares...its not gonna influence or interest the scribes at hello! magazine is it?. a biopic portrayal of one of gordy's most enigmatic protogee's would be a welcome addition to all of our libraries if it is filmed true to the context of the character's life....it wouldn't be deemed true to life if the nuts and bolts of dirt dishing weren't included and lets face it,..marvin didnt exactly walk "the straight path" himself let alone references to the most important people in his career. as for a lavish musical celebration of a historical landmark label, is he intent on coming up with young people you bear a striking resemblence to his stars, in an attempt to give an audience a "down the years" view of how the stars matured to become the global phenomenon they are today and, of course, will it actually include the real heroe's we have come to revere and love during our own lifetimes. now if thats what he intends to do....that would DEFINITELY be worth seeing and possibly your "dancing in the streets tour" would be consigned to the backburner.

The One Show
well, ive just caught up with this, having missed it on monday...its always more of a surprise to find out who the closet dwelling northern soul lovers are amongst the glitterati. nevertheless, i dont know why but i tend to cringe at how the media portrays the scene on tv....do they really still NOT understand just how popular this music is...40+years on?. contradicting that, it also instills a glow that they DO pay attention..., however irreverand their attention to detail....could that be because they realize just who mundane the contemporary music format is today??er,....real soul produced in america is exempt of course which shows that a clutch of artists/producers are still interested in making creative music without resorting too much to technology, but that stems from the fact most of these people have instilled the idealogical roots that hark back to what was born in the 50's and 60's and theyre keep ing the flame alive in the new millenium. if there's a grouch here, its the fact they always wheel out the same tunes, synonymous with the microcosm of knowledge they have about the scene and they always refer to dusty bin ala casino minutae. that'll probably never change
