I wanted to ask the same but apparently it's only by checking the matrix that one can tell the difference so likely a bit useless...

Johnny Maestro 'Stepping out' on Scepter WDJ Ex+ OFFERS
Was minty when I first acquired it. It was originally found by a record dealer in a Radio stock in the USA. All the 45's from that lot had such tiny writing presumably to distinguish each time the type of music. Now I have to "downgrade" it as a real nice Ex+. Still strong sounding Ex+. 600dpi scans to attest that visualy. This is Johnny's last singles with the Crests. It was obviously not well promoted. Still the promo copies of this 45's appear to be scarcer than the commercial releases. This is the only way to get this "rarer" mix with the dramatic high pitch wail of Johnny at the end of the tune that is not featured on the stock copies... PM me your offers for consideration until Wednesday midnight ! mp3 from with both sides with needle drop and and lift and scans from the actual record. johnny maestro.mp3

Blue-eyed Soul?
This Johnny Daye 'stay baby staaAAAAAayyyy...' is a long-long firm favorite of mine. I was told sometimes back that the guy was white. So I listened again and again to my copy of 'good time' on Jomada and couldn't hear the "white" bit. Still, I omitted to it since I didn't know for fact otherwise and it wouldn't change my liking to the his 45's anyway. And when I got this Stax 45, I thought to myself; Ha ! Now I know, he's black ! Search for it on the net, landed on this; My venture into black music as a kid started with Jamaican music after buying a Prince Buster 'FAB' LP as quoted for reference by my likes of the day then like the Specials, Madness... I still vividly remember coming back home and laying the 'FAB' LP on my deck and looking at my 2-Tone records starting to wonder 'what am I going to do with those now ?'. Then came the obsession for soul music even before 'Northern'. Never too much into the R'n'B thing and even less into Country or Rock'n'Roll, Swing stuffs and all that Jazz, I focused on those sexy vintage 45's. Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae and Soul were "black" colored music. In the studios at least... Or the recording side of the mike mainly... Or most of the times at least... then the other times something else of the other color; white, red, yellow or brown. Blue doesn't count as the Smurfs can't sing and they are Belgians. So like most I'd say to find pictures or footages of the artists to have a reference to put in context was and still is always a quest. And now to be proven wrong once again, is always a blessing since my "pride" is worth less than the truth in my book. Word Up ! Bless you Johnny Daye.

Emanuel Laskey-Dont Lead Me On-Mix Question?
Nope, top one one is the previously unissued one credited to Emanuel Lasky on 45 but is actually Billy Kennedy. Second YT clip is the scratched-out matrix ! My mate with the "thin" mix has too much hassle with work, wages and making ends meet, like the other half do, that he didn't find the time yet to drop by... I will keep you posted with a real recordings of both sounding better than these for a real comparison.

Brothers of soul I'd be grateful
No I doubt that these vinyl issues were first releases even with a misspelt title. Likely some kind of "rush release" to satisfy an immediate demand. The Creations on sis label Zodiac had the same fate.

Poll: Version Battle - These Things Will Keep
No offense intended on this side either, but I know my "POP". Even the few "guilty secret" records I still own and that I still kinda like and easily admit to it when pointed out; I just toss my hand in the air and try to take a I don't care I like it proud attitude for few seconds before letting escape a "guilty" smile and few words I know it's Eeek ! "POP" but I still like it... Where I always had issues with Euro productions even when the vocals are the real USA thing. So I could never like the Blue Sharks and since I didn't remembered how it goes, I just went and listen to it again on YT. Straight from the opening of the tune I couldn't keep it up as the vocals screamed "POP" and I ended that YT session right away. I totally admit that one like or even prefer this to that but not to admit that it's not soulful and has to be something else like the "POP" thing ensemble can fit, is not really arguable I find. God Bless !

Poll: Version Battle - These Things Will Keep
Fogert yt, Berry Gordy got ripped off once again... myself I think not. The Requins Bleus is so uninspired pop where the Velvelettes never did a bad song and every 45's they did bare at least one fab song !

Brothers of soul I'd be grateful
Well this is the vinyl press also. Where the orange is a styrene one. Value wise I believe this red label vinyl issue fetches a tad more. As to how much, I don't know.

Emanuel Laskey-Dont Lead Me On-Mix Question?
I will ask my friend to whom I sold my ex-copy without the scratched-out matrix to bring it along next time he'll come over my place and do an mp3 of it with my now scratched-out matrix copy and post it on here so you can compare both versions from there and find out for yourself where to take it. I made my choice

Emanuel Laskey-Dont Lead Me On-Mix Question?
It's not really a matter of first or second "mix" but rather of 'take'. Likely because of a mix/master mistake during the recording session provoking a confusion during the release or such kind of story. The first pressed copies that are more commonly found are the non-scratched out matrix and have a mix/mastering issue as there is no bass channel giving it a "brittle" thin/sharp sound but maybe to an effect of slickness... to some ears at least. Then you have the less common scratched out matrix copies which are clearly another cut since even Emmanuel Laskey's singing differs and here the mix/master channels are clearly balanced with bass and full horns to give the tune BODY ! Finally, and I got rightfully called-off above, the unissued later released version of Billy Kennedy...

Poll: 60s or 70s Which one was the most Soulful decade
Hope to agree we're talking about the singing here. God knows I love my few instrumental 45's but soul is voice first right ? If agreed, I'd say vocal wise in the 7T's the singing seemed more liberated generally. To a point when it became a style and at times turned into a caricature of itself. The problem with any recipe that works and sells is that copycats and opportunists are just around the corner and the thing can become unbearable as embarrassing. In the 6T's I believe that the vocals were often more "refrained" and at times also caricatures of themselves. But hopefully there are plenty of fantastic exceptions from the early 6T's through the 7T's and 8T's. But one has to admit that "inspired" soul vocals were random in the 6T's and that it became the more 'conventional' vocal approach in and all along the 7T's. This is why we dig for our 'rare soul' music. To find the one that will thick all the boxes in one's heart. So I've given up long ago to set barriers in decades, orchestration and Hi-Fi on records only to listen if the record actually can satisfy my soul thirst. On the pol matter I'd say "inspired soul singing" was more widespread during the 7T's but when it comes to count the tunes coming to my mind to stick being "soulful" voices, they are all 6T's...

Rare jimmy james & vagabonds.
Use to see it a lot and then never picked those up. Rather a too often seen and not considered record in my eyes at least. So I don't think it should be worth much even today...
