A youth culture left in the hands of old men'
a quick blunt but straight answer to the thread title a youth culture left in the hands of old men is no longer a youth culture. Seems pretty obvious really, been said before, but most of all scenes music or otherwise generally only last two years at their best, then people or circumstance change....as for the music well you just can’t fault that can you, but then we all know that.. 🙂 mal

Poll: Version Battle - Not My Girl
Johnny for me as well, I have the platters 45 from going to that years anniversary, but I would love an original of Johnny Hampton. Think the more sparse no backing singers feel of Johnny’s version gives it a tad more to the ear, and I love his voice:-) that platters you tube link was recorded far too fast to really make that version sound right though... The rise of the 'NEW' soulie and the soul revolution.
Of course, but I do think collecting vinyl will eventually decline, and I’ve mentioned 2030 in my post as a time by which that might happen. ‘Might’. ! But Honestly I don’t know it’s just conjecture isn’t it. I still crave some in that blokes top 500.... actually because when I was younger I’d have never bought allot of them, but now I actually like my oldies collection, I like getting them on Aussie labels, makes it a bit different... but we don’t tell people what to buy do we? that would wrong and very narrow minded... lol m

Wav's are going to kill your disc space mate, good quality MP3 should do it as Chalky says, keep the bit rate up, don't compress them and they will sound fine I'm sure.. For ages I recorded allot of my original 45's as Wavs, still got allot if your interested, or I have their MP3 counterparts if you have stuff to swap? any Genre, decade, But I'm not really into Funk much... lols Mal

The rise of the 'NEW' soulie and the soul revolution.
I don't know about 'the new soulie' and all that, but I was thinking about what kind of soul music and how we will enjoy soul music in the future. I can for see a smaller 'scene' or amount of lovers of the music, of what we know as Rare soul, or northern soul, that's happening as we speak I think as the generations get older and sell up. I think the balance of the type of music will change, If you take all the new productions that are coming out, stuff like the brilliant Benjamin & The Right Direction et al, it may well grow in terms of live acts in the flavor of their sixties forerunners, listening digitally will be the main way to 'get' the music, and the collecting scene will be smaller I think... I don’t think newcomers to soul music whether its old or new in the main are going to pay the prices that are being charged these days, that model if you like isn’t something that’s going to make it accessible, it’s always been a niche thing anyway.... We cant say with certinaly what will be happening in 2030, but it wont resemble whats gone before... and that's right, stuff evolves... what do you all think? Mal

Best live performance
Ohhh, Edwin Starr at the Q club in Birmingham, late 9ts I think... he was on with Steve Mancha, JJ Barnes...and a host of uk jocks, brass section on ‘Time’ literally blew me away!! Great night A close second, Mary Love singing ‘Baby I’ll come’ at the Kent label party in Kentish Town, about 2005/6 I think, don’t remember the dates now but that for me was knockout, and Maxine Brown and Tommy Hunt sang the samd night as well :-) it was a 7/8 min rendition of the song, simply awesome !!! malc
