  1. Probably the biggest "disco" record ever played on the Northern scene.
  2. EVERYTHING by Wales Wallace is absolutely brilliant !!!
  3. Spyder Turner - "I Can't Make It Anymore" Dells - "Make Sure" Wales Wallace - "Somebody I Know" Jimmy Jones "Ain't Nothing Wrong ...... " Barbara Jean English - "If It Feels This Good"
  4. Dave Godin maintained that in Donna King's "Take Me Home" she utters the line "don't you have enough f**king hearts.... " - think she says the word broken - but you listen & decide.
  5. Try here https://www.soulbrother.com/shop/detroits-golden-soul-ron-murphy-masters/
  6. We tend to focus on the post '75 tunes - the jazz funk/disco - new release from that period stuff. We even dress normally too !!
  7. There is a benefit night for him on November 29th in Blackpool. Info here https://www.facebook.com/groups/168667893279666/326529247493529/?notif_t=group_comment_reply
  8. Ian Levine does not want to be part of it. Les Cokell is no longer with us Tony Jebb no longer DJs & is not in the best of health If we are going down this route why not mention Billy The Kid - Keith Minshull - Stuart Freeman !!!
  9. Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier Pete ... been to the shop to get my missus a "Wedding Reunion" card ...........
  10. Do any of these venues have anniversaries ?
  11. The "split" had begun as early as 1974 when Colin & Ian had decided that so much great new music was coming out of America it was impossible to ignore - who else would have played "The Bottle" ? Now regarded as one of the biggest records ever played. Of course playing contemporary releases wasn't new - The Wheel was doing that back in the late sixties. A lot of the music released between 1973 to 1976 are now seriously sought after tunes - you could pick them up for less than a quid up The Highland Room back then - Bill Brandon, Bessie Banks, Ujima etc. Yes, there were people who went to Wigan & had never been to Central Drive who assumed all that was bought or played was "Disco sh*te !! In 75/76 up The Mecca, in my opinion, there were 3 choices given you the way that the music was going. 1) Leave the scene altogether because The Mecca wasn't playing what you wanted & neither was Wigan. 2) Stick with the music at The Mecca - but still embrace 60s because there was still good stuff being discovered. 3) Embrace all the new stuff & dismiss all the 60s stuff. You have to remember in 1976/77 there was an influx of people to The Highland Room who went to hear new soul & Jazz Funk - Northern Soul meant nothing to them. 70s soul & crossover nights have never been more popular than today - yet certain DJs were heavily criticised for doing just that over 35 years ago !!! What goes around comes around folks !!
  12. Great record - what Northern Soul is all about !!!
  13. Her version of "Rescue Me" off an album had a few spins back in the day.
  14. "Love is a smile you give me that makes my day seem brighter Love is your arms around me makes my troubles lighter" My mum's favourite Northern tune - I can still hear her singing along to this in the kitchen when I was a teenager.
  15. Nice record - but she certainly isn't dancing to it !!
  16. Epic replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
The first 70s "re-issue" had the instrumental of SIMC on the flip.
  17. The American 7 inch although recorded in '72 did not get an official release until 1976.
  18. The problem I have with these debates is that the particular "genre" is discussed in isolation. Of course I don't wanto listen to 1 or 2 hours of relentless re edits & remixes just as I don't want to hear 15 or 20 house tunes at 123 bpm on after the other. As long as a DJ produces an interesting and entertaining set that is enogh for me - if it contains a couple of quality edits/remixes I am happy with that.
  19. It was Rita Coolidge.
  20. Nice one Pete - "What Goes Around Comes Around" !!
  21. Why are all the records in this video & most of a similar ilk from the 1972 Torch/Mecca era & the Wigan 73/75 era ? Do other records discovered after those periods not get played ? The people who actually went to those venues back then craved to here new discoveries - not the same thing played over & over again.
