great story, didn't know that ... always assumed Richard had found it on his infamous trip to Philadelphia or got it from JA.

Dave is right Larry Clinton was played around 1978 and yes was definitely before the unissued Eddie Holman tracks assume you refer to 'were im not wanted' and 'Hurt"? As far as I know all the copies of LC in the late 70s and early 80s were white dj copies, the first time I was aware of the red issue was mid 90s when it appeared on a list for £1500, along with Gwen Owens, Mel Britt DJ etc. someone in the north west was selling them can't remember who. Ted is also correct Ian Clark had mint white demos in the early 80s I got mine from him too, Soul bowl also listed it once or twice around that time. As for Eddie Holman when Chris King first brought him to the UK in the mid 80s to perform at Stafford he didn't initially have a clue what the Larry Clinton 45 was and pretty much didn't want anything to do with it, certainly didn't want to learn it and sing it. I was asked or invited by Chris to attend the first rehearsal by Eddie, who was totally bemused by when shown the Larry Clinton 45 with his credit on it and had to be cajoled by Chris into having a go at it only though after he had run through 'hey there lonely girl' ... again. Eddie also had absolutely no memory of 'hurt' or 'where I'm not wanted', amazingly by the end of the week at Stafford he and Snake Davis had near perfected all three from a cassette tape I loaned Chris.
  3. There was no direct connection between the Belgian popcorn scene and Stafford. Yes plenty of the sounds played could be classed as popcorn but it wasn't intentional, more a coincidence.

Chris bought 'Lady in Green' from Gary (Rushbrooke) driving over to his house immediately Gary decided to quit just to secure it. Chris was an unsung hero in many ways, Eric Mercury, Ramona Collins etc.
  5. "COVERS 33" don't waste your time if you want your shipment this year, they use second class royal mail for delivery on smaller orders which in this internet age of enhanced expectation feels like a decade.
  6. still looking for this ... anyone?
  7. Extract from Gary Rushbrooke's 'Detroit is Happening' in Soul Source magazine circa 1979/80 'People who don't appreciate how records can be rare should go to this city, in the late 60s and even in this very day when a company issues a record and it does not sell it will go out of business, existing on a day to day basis and relying on every record to be a hit can be a very dangerous. Awake records who issued Eddie Parker I'm Gone and Shane Hunter Sweet Things needed one of them to sell so they could carry on, neither did so the company closed down and all the stock was destroyed When I was talking to Larry Lick owner of Velgo records he recalls how he went outside and smashed hundreds of copies of Gwen Owens so he could make more room in the warehouse, also this was a faulty recording and should never have out to shops in the first place'
  8. I agree with Steve Foran regards this, and am a little puzzled as to why this has rocketing in value and cred since the 90s. I sold my copy back in the 90s for around 700, I think it actually hung around no buyers for a week or two. Regarding the rarity, there was a fantastic story published in Chris Fletcher's soul source by Gary Rushbrooke 'Detroit is Happening' which touched on this.
  9. Paul could you tell us why you listed bootlegs on ebay last year and didn't describe them as such. The auction house was advised which of the listings were boots prior to the items finishing but the descriptions were not changed? for example Rubin ... https://www.popsike.com/NORTHERN-SOUL-RUBIN-YOUVE-BEEN-AWAY-7-KAPP-EX-PROMO/251162605052.html

  14. Definitely a Pat Brady record first played spring of 1985, the copy Pat bought was offered to me by John Anderson for a massive £500, this was off the radar price wise in 1985. To put the price in context delites lover cuppy at the time was £30, William Powell around £50 etc. etc. It sounded fine when I heard it at soul bowl and it went big for Pat for a year or two, have to say though listening to it now it does sound bloody awful.
  15. Silver Blades may have been originally a Mecca owned ice rink with a club above the rink, but the main "Mecca" club was in Manningham Lane, featuring in the film Billy Liar, ironically the same film also shows Silver Blades under construction. The club above Silver Blades was 'Anabellas' and had a popular northern night in the mid 70s around 1975 so not 60s as far as I know.

Agree with Tony not much quality there, seems like loads of below average stuff making way way beyond its normal sale value. I bid on a few things including the Jock Mitchell which unlike some things seemed reasonable at 270 plus buyers premium. I had intended to go to the auction but there appeared to be too much unsalable dross on sight of the catalogue. They did have a 'northern soul expert' advising them apparently. Provided everything sold that hammered and wasn't just scrubbed the sale room will have made a pretty packet around 20% each way in buyers and sellers premium.
  18. Still looking for this Steve? this was (prior to the odd copy turning up) always one of those legendary titles discussed along with Nolan Chance on Bunky and even a suggestion of Stanley Mitchell on Musicor!? seem to remember being told by Ron Pedley that Richard Sealing had a copy of the Belles on NZ, so have you asked him?, you never know he does sell things from time to time. ... George
  19. this topic has been discussed and bottomed at some length here are the last two threads on the subject, hopefully giving you an answer.

  21. Manny has talked about producing an iphone/ipad app in the past. You wouldn't need to charge £30 for the app to make it viable because you wouldn't have the big overheads for the print.
  22. Yes I noticed this the other day, previously a normal fund withdrawal could take days possibly a week, the funds are literally now transfered fee free into your account within minutes. If they are refunding fees does it possibly mean someone has made a challenge to the legality of the previous set up?
  23. one offered in sales by PhilT, reasonable price too compared with other recent copies
  24. This was massive for Keb towards the end of Stafford and just beyond, I eventually convinced him to part with it a few months after TOTW closed but had to trade Charles Brandy on Blue Cat to get it. As far far as played at Wigan ... not as far as I know it was deemed as a new sound when Keb played it, just because its on a Wigan CD doesn't mean it was played there. If you still want a copy on Doré Andy Dyson did have a spare, it has also turned up on ebay for around 500 within the last year (bargain)
  25. superb read Andy thank you, all these years many people didn't know the whole story ...
