Of all the great northern available to the scene, some have to resort to playing a piece of crappy pop music. And people slag mid 70s Wigan off?

Iโve read extracts I downloaded, not much mind. As you say heavy going, they aren't for the enthusiasts really.

Lisa Stansfield 8-3-1 how much ?
I think you will find it is the so called soul police who say play it from the cd. Those who bang on about OVO usually in my experience are a bit clueless and have some sort of agenda. We managed for decades without the term and it seems to be the new breed of johnny come lately Djs and promoters who bang on about the term.

Lisa Stansfield 8-3-1 how much ?
If I was the promoter you wouldnโt be playing it off the sonic wax boot. Itโd be cd only or not at all. not specifically this track but the obsession with vinyl irrespective if its legit or not over the original cd is pathetic. Corey Glover another example.

Keeping the faith: A History Of Northern Soul - Kindle
I realise who it is aimed as is not the man or woman in th street and it is for other academics. Hower given that the market it is aimed at would I imagine be very limited you think they would make it more accessible for all. Especially given the fact that the culture is pretty popular right now. ยฃ30 I might have stretched my budget and bought one.

New Kent CD Review - This Is Fame 1964-1968
Florence Alabama Music Enterprises, or simply FAME, the world-renowned recording studio and record label owned by Rick Hall in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It produced a wealth of hit records for many artists and was instrumental in creating the sound of Muscle Shoals. As well as the hits the studio and label also had an amazing amount of material that didnโt make the charts or was simply left in the can. However Ace Records struck a deal to go through the vaults and subsequently many tracks have been rescued and issued thus further preserving the legacy Rick Hall and the extremely talented group of writers and musicians has left behind. Compilations of Rare and Unissued, The Hall of Fame and The Fame Studio Story have all chronicled the amazing story and depth of music from the studio. Further compilations from its stars such as George Jackson, Clarence Carter & Jimmy Hughes as well as several 45s, EPs and box sets have introduced the studio, not just to seasoned collectors of Soul and especially Southern Soul Music but to a whole new generation of fans as well. The latest offering, This Is Fame 1964-1968 is a compilation of the very best the label has to offer both released and at the time unreleased recordings. Dancers, ballads, heartbreakers and tearjerkers, hits, failures, obscure and unreleased. The studio and label have a vast wealth of material and this compilation highlights some of the Southern Soul and in particular The Sound Of Muscle Shoals the studio and label has to offer. James Barnettโs โKeep On Talkingโ, Art Freeman with โSlipping Around With Youโ and June Conquest with โAlmost Persuadedโ, just three tracks from the label which were seized upon by the UK Northern Soul scene many years ago in the quest for obscure American Soul/R&B 45s and have since gone on to become scene classics. Jimmy Hughes, one of the labels more prolific artists is represented with โSteal Awayโ a hit from the studio in 1963 and the R&B mover Hi Heal Sneakersโ. The Del-Rays with more R&B Dancers with their take of โFortune Tellerโ, members of the Del-Rays, Jimmy Johnson & Roger Hawkins would form part of the famed bunch of musicians Rick Hall would put together at the second time of asking when original members left for Nashville. Recently discovered material from the likes of Dan & Spence โLong Agoโ, James Barnett โIt Tears Me Upโ & Ralph โSoulโ Jackson with โYou Really Know How To Hurt A Guyโ and more, all have featured in compilations since Ace and Kent Records delved into the Fame archives. Fame songwriters Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham show there was more to them than writing but recording their own compositions for themselves too, Penn with โTake Me (Just As I am) and Oldham with โWish You Didnโt Have To Goโ, both tracks jointly penned by the pair. Both would continue to write many hit records for other acts, both at Fame and later elsewhere. Soul Music giants, George Jackson, Otis Clay, Clarence Carter & Arthur Conley with tracks that exemplify the Southern Soul sound of the time. Jeanie Greene, a Muscle Shoals session singer is the second female on the compilation with another track that old saw the light of day in recent years with the down tempo โDonโt Make Me Hate Loving Youโ. 24 of the very best tracks the studio has to offer, compiled by Dean Rudland who also provided the extensive liner notes. I realise I am preaching to many who are already converted to the church of Southern Soul, but the work Ace/Kent have put into showcasing the small studio on East Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals should ensure that its legacy is enjoyed by soul music lovers for many years to come. The Stafford bit on my site gives the cover up name alongside the actual title in tne podcasts. Dave Flynnโs site Anoraks Corner is probably the best place on line, he has a page dedicated to them.

Detroit My Home Town - A Vinyl Lp from Hayley Records
Detroit hold a special place in the world of soul music. For many it is considered the capitol of soul music amongst collectors. It is a very emotive and subjective argument of course but Detroit does hold a special place in the heart of the Rare, Northern Soul scene. Partly because of the accessibility from the very early days with many acts having travelled to the UK since the 1960s to the present day but largely because of the depth of quality music from a myriad of labels all out to grab a part of the black music scene in Detroit dominated by Motown right through the 1960sยญยญยญยญยญยญยญ. Richard "Popcorn" Wylie @ in the UK Hayley Records, based in Coventry owned and operated by Rob Moss and is a UK label dedicated to unearthing and releasing previously unissued material recorded largely from Detroit, by and large from the 1960s but also the 1970s. 2020 marks the labels 20th anniversary and to mark the occasion its first vinyl LP has been released. Entitled โDetroit: My Home Townโ it features a dozen tracks from the aforementioned City, 9 having seen the light of day on previous 45 releases from Hayley whilst for 3 tracks this LP is their first outing. J.J. Barnes, one of Detroitโs best loved artists kicks off the album with Lucille. This received some turntable action vias Dean Anderson over the years after the reel to reel tapes were unearthed and some โacetatesโ cut. The Stylists caused a stir when it was released a couple of years ago. The Perfections feature with their take on Tony Hestorโs โJust Canโt Leave Youโ. Other tracks that featured on Hayley 45s are Tony Hestor with his version of โKeep A Hold On Meโ. A female take surfaced some years ago with Diane Lewis on vocal duty. Mid-tempo reigns supreme with Bobby Sheppard & Surely & the slightly more up-tempo Gilford & Shruggs with โDonโt Let Me Lose Itโ which if memory serves had turntable action years ago when an acetate surfaced? Deon Jackson, one of Detroitโs greats with โIโve Got So Much Loveโ, Sharon McMahan with her take of the song she penned, โI Have No Choiceโ that was released by Johnnie Mae Matthews and Jimmy Delphs are the final three sides that saw a 45 release via Hayley. Jimmy Delphs surfaced a few years ago when the guitarist appeared on Soul Source and sent the track to some members which was then cut to disc by an enterprising few and played to dancefloors up and down the UK. The album features three previously unissued tracks. Jimmy Guildford with a cut that was intended for Thelma Records, โAll Over and Doneโ. Northern Soul Royalty in the shape of Rose Batiste is next with โItโs Not What You Say (But How You Say It)โ. Recorded at Golden World, we are not sure what label it was intended for but thankfully Hayley brought this fine mid-tempo offering to vinyl. Mention the Detroit Soul scene or indeed Northern Soul and Popcorn Wylie wonโt be far from the conversation. He features with one of the sceneโs perennial favourites and one that has featured throughout all the eras of the scene โGoing To A Happeningโ. However, this is minus Tommy Nealโs vocals but does feature the backing vocals, provided by Popcorn himself, the sound engineers Ed Wulfrum and Danny Dallas and the Lewis Sisters, Pat & Diane. The album comes on nice thick vinyl and if you love good old fashioned Northern Soul or the more soulful sound of Detroit this is a worthy addition to any collection and has received very favourable review and plays amongst DJs on radio and โliveโ on other outlets since its release. Look out for other 45 releases as Rob aka @Rob Mossand Hayley Records continue to celebrate 20 years of quality unreleased soul music. http://www.hayleyrecords.co.uk/vinylalbum/index.asp

USA eBAY This sounds good
If it is and looking where it would possibly come in the listing for Eastern Records I think it may possibly be Tina Britt, it does sound something like her if you listen.

Contact label Chicago and The Traits
Discogs has Paulette down as Paulette Dispenza so Barryโs wife maybe?
-
Contact label Chicago and The Traits
The Traits far from unknown or even semi known these days IMO. It has had quite a bit of turntable action in recent years. One of the variants was always pretty cheap so maybe why it was ignored by some?
