What constitutes going big? going from a 20/30 record to 150 quid? It has had constant plays on the scene for nigh on 30 years, been a very popular track for DJ's from my experience over these years. All of a sudden someone pays what many reckon is a daft amount and it's rarely been played prior to this? I don't know the demagraphics of those buying it but I doubt very much the majority are 20 somethings Don't get me wrong it is great to see records like this getting attention but common sense seems to go out of the window as usual with this scene.

It was a one off acetate but sure one was found some years ago on Columbia, John Manship sold to Sam I believe. I think if memory serves me correctly Richard Searling played it other week on his radio show so probably has the Columbia one now.

Irene and the Scotts has been played long before recent times. I was playing it late 80's early 90's and plenty of others have over the years. It is no more popular now with collectors than say 15/20 years ago, it is probably the johnny come lately dj's who are now cottoning onto it and pushing the price up. There are copies out there to satisfy demand, we've seen no end for sale in recent times, every week practically. That is probably the reason for the dismay in the price hike?

Radcliffe was busy in the record bar last week, busiest I've seen it for a while, Lifeline usually pretty busy, all tables taken anyway. Not all nighters busy though, 100 Club hardly any other week. I and others though have noticed more money being spent when out and about but have to agree it is easier on line these days, especially if you have specific wants.

The CD is out on the 8th. I'll have a word with Dave and see if I can sort a sound file over the weekend.

I asked Guy Mark and here is his answer.... No Chalky, I may have played in an all-Dayer oldies spot at the time, but defo not TOTW. It was played at early Wigan, and the other take/version was pretty common.

Trade Martin not particularly forgotten just extremely rare, one acetate copy and owned by Richard still as far as I'm aware. same for Jimmy Delphs, not many have a copy so not likely to hear it too often.

Asked on the Stafford group and not remembered on there either for any plays back then.

One of those I don't have a DJ for from that era. Used to get em on tape swaps.

I think it is the album version and the european 45 releases or one of them. German multi coloured one?

Both are 106, Bell Sound mix tougher than Nasville Matrix mix. The EL that is reputed to be Billy Kennedy is Thelma 115 (I think).

What is ridiculous? Lyrically it is terrible, the same for many novelty songs. As for dance craze records, there are some bad ones but there are some excellent ones, this just happens to be in the former.

Well done to Chris and Marcelle for 11 years of New Century Soul. Been tough at times, put a hell of a lot into it the scene and asked for nothing in return, you can be proud of what you have done. Last night also a chance to pay some respect to The Four Perfections and a chance for them to see that something they did a long time ago has had lasting impact. They seemed genuinely overcome by the reception they received and they and their family who came along seemed to have a great time. Take a bow, Chris, Marcelle and Dave Moore

So many big ticket sets are simply boring now as far too many DJ's seem to have a lot of them and they've been hammered in many cases. There is a genuine lack of imagination in the mainstream soul scene with both DJ's afraid to take a chance for the fear of not getting another booking and far too many promoters happy to sit back and not buck the status quo. As said the majority of today's big money records started off cheap rising in price as demand rose. Today's cheapie tomorrows expensive 45? But there are many big ticket items that if they were a tenner they wouldn't get a second play as many simply lack quality as well. I don't see a problem with the occasional nights like this where DJ's are encouraged to use some imagination and you never know you just might enjoy it?

I still have my doubts but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong mate. Listening to both (PL & BB & PD) Patti's voice sounds that bit smoother on her 60's recordings? Any idea of the recording date for the Virtue track? She signed with her group to Atlantic in 1965.

I've never had one fail either. It has to be mp3 or that is what is recommended. As far as I know the file size limit is unlimited now.

Anyway I've emailed Patti LaBelle so hopefully she will reply with an answer either way.

Why is it the soul snob insult is always rolled out when some dislikes a record. You've dismissed a £25 a record set night without even giving it a chance, what does that make you Phil? Thankfully we don't all share the same taste. it has a great backing but the lyrics are plain ridiculous and I can't believe anyone would serioulsy consider laying those down for a commercial release. I really do think in the cold light of the day after the session they realised what a turkey they had and canned it. The lyrics spoilt a good dance record. as for it being Patti Labelle, wouldn't she be tied up with Atlantic atbthe time of this recording? There would be no way she could put her name to another production if she was?
