How do you know it would never have existed? I dare say there would have be some sort of soul scene without Motown but who is right or wrong I guess we will never know. Other labels were collected just as much if not more, especially for those who preferred it more soulful/gritty. Granted many did get into the scene through Motown but many soon looked elsewhere when they realised it isn't all about Motown, especially since much of it is commercial and as I said aimed at a white pop market.

There are tons of lesser known 60's tracks too, or should I say lesser played. You only have to go through dealers websites and listen or refosoul to find them. All it takes is a bit of patience, something DJ's and dancefloors don't have these days. Dunno about tons of 70's, think most 70's, like the 60's, are known (maybe not to the dancers but to dealers and collectors they are known) but again they maybe haven't the quality of previous 70's before them. DJ's and collectors moved onto 70's some years ago when the 60's started to dry up.

Motown R&B??? Much of the popular Motown is just that pop. It was aimed at a white pop audience. Berry Gordy knew he couldn't mass market and sell millions to the black audience, thats why he didn't use photos of the groups on the sleeves to begin with. There are 100's of labels that strived to create their own sound and not copy/impersonate Motown, other Detroit labels included and many of these are just as important to the scene. Not everyone subscibes to your ideals, Motown, yes it made some great music, some shite too, but it isn't the bedrock of the scene to all of us.

I see this topic has gone the way of many before it....... Was the original question era or genres? or do they mean they same the 60's was the best era!! But today there are very few quality "new" 60's records being discovered. Like Ivor said the few that are are acetates or unissued tapes. Crossover has limited appeal so hardly the mainstream Northern Scene, you can't dance to most of it, ok if all you do is sit and listen. Much of the mainstream Northern Scene has hardly progressed for years sticking to what was in eras gone by. There are still plenty from the 80's that will be still unknown to many who weren't there so maybe that era is an area that will eventually be tapped into, some of the top DJ's are already going back to the 80's with plays like the Limitations and The Flairs (Butch).

What Northern Soul is all about IMHO. Its far from perfect but that's probably the appeal of the record, a bunch of blokes giving it their all in the studio.

you're not looking hard enough. there's been a few through ebay, one on JM's auction (700 odd quid) and others sold via lists.

Not everyone thinks it is brilliant.....I wouldn't go as far as to say it is sh*t, just average.

dunno Nev, I was just wondering that if someone has two copies of a highly collectable record such as the Young Brothers, then I was wondering if he had any other gems in his collection, or even doubles. As for slagging off, you should know by know what Soul Source is like, some have nothing better to do or say than slag something or someone off.

well to these lug oles the Whats Your Game sounds much stronger than the present copy on ebay and the Baby side has no where near the hiss etc the copy on ebay has now. Listening to both soundfiles they sound different. The description also give a different grading too. The seller clearly states he found two copies in the same collection.

nothing to be sorry about. one side is in pretty decent shape and if the grading for the flip has he calls it is of usual US standard then it will be more like vg+ or better to some UK dealers. Its a rare record and as it is only the inferior side (IMHO) that is damaged it will still sell.

dunno about fidelity but there are two releases both with a different take of Baby.

who gives a f*ck...the seller clearly states the condition and half a dozen bidders, who I would assume have read the description are prepared to take a chance, presumably on the "Whats Your Game" side which plays pretty good to these ears and not the inferior Baby. what has 100 watchers got to do with the end price? doesn't mean they are interested in bidding. I'm watching, have been since the day it was listed but purely out of interest.

Hi mate, hope you had a good Christmas? I can just picture some poor soul trying to get to the toilets with Ozzie, Tommo and Co sat at the top of the stairs!! Great all-nighter whilst Guy ran it. Didn't feel the same when it opened again few years later. Be good to see what they didn't show!!!
