No Recent Northern Discovery Would Have Cut It At Wc
Seen to reall you and me having this discussion before Kev. Still think the Mello Souls would have made it, maybe not in 1973/74 but towards the end ('79/'80) if RS had got hold of this I still think it would have gone down taken the roof off Two more from Butch that I thnk would have gone down well, Shirley Turner (Ann Robinson) World of Happiness and Jesse James Love Is Alright. Diane Lewis - Ain't Got A Chance Too. All in my opinion of course.

No Recent Northern Discovery Would Have Cut It At Wc
John Vincent told me that he offered it to Richard S and it was turned down with the "too good for the northern scene" comment you mention. Not sure if it was after Wigan closed or at the tail end when offered to Richard. Great record!!

Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
Bang on about Lifeline pal Maybe all promoters should insist that DJ's play 4 or 5 records from left field just to spice things up a bit

Dance Competitions
Personally Billy I think they spoil the night these days. I witnessed the same one Wicksy did and the best dancers sat it out. To get on in a dance comp it seems you have to either look wierd or throw themselves about for the whole duration neither in time to the beat and totally lacking decent footwork. Like Rob said the choice of tracks for dnace competitions doesn't give those with decent footwork the chance to shine, the choice of tracks certainly needs looking at and the judges should be looking for the dancers first an formost not the acrobats....don't get me wrong I love to see the floor tricks but it has to fit in with the track, in the breaks etc not for the whole track.

Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
I gotta agree with all you say about the fancy dress Mark. Was at a do other day and on the dancefloor there was some ridiculous looking outfits, seems that is the criteria to get into the top three of a dance comp as well cause certainly couldn't dance. Those doing the floor tricks don't even do it in time to the music, just throw themselves about with little grace and style. Does little IMO to encourage youngsters onto the scene.

How Much Money Have You Spent On Northern Soul?
God knows, impossible to work out. For years everything I earnt went on getting to venues etc and records (after board, ciggies, drink and something for the weekend)
-
Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
Lifeline isn't a smaller venue The way forward is for promoters to program dj's who can play a well balanced set, that flows that also includes a certain percentage of underplyed, semi/unknown tracks, there are plenty that are good enough and are cracking dancers but are disregarded in the name of safety first attitude. A Dj who seems to get on these days is one who waves a blank cheque at records, not one who uses his or her imagination. And I see so many plugs for venues that claim to be underplayed etc but often fail to deliver when I've either been or seen playlists.

Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
you forgot to mention the best upfront all-nighter (not just my opinion either )Simon, Lifeline October 31st. The only other nighter with a likeminded ploicy that makes me want to go without driving for over 3 hoursis the Wilton (oh and Bidds when I can). I agree with many ofyour points, the scene has been a failing scene musically by and largefor years. It gets more and more retro every year. Many people spouton about how they want something different but you never see them whensomething is promoted for them, even local to them!

Why Do We Have Dj,s
A DJ is there to let those who booked at taxi know it's turned up at end of night A Dj's job is there to entertain and educate (otherwise there is no point going out) but the balance has to be right according to the venue and the policy. But there a too few promoters these days who are prepared to stray from the norm and get DJ's who are prepared to educate with a few unknowns/semi-unknowns, which is a pity.
