  1. Many thanks to Brian and to guests Pete Mattock, Kev Such, Ciro, Pete Hulatt and Nancy Yahiro for a great first session of 2015! Very entertaining and some amazing soul played by everyone as always Here's what I chose to warm the room up this time anyway: The Valdons - Just how much can one man stand (Secret Stash) Gene Washington & The Ironsides - Got to get through to you (Colemine) The Up Tights - How long must I wait for you (Soul7) Mixed Feelings - Sha-La-La (United) Chuck Stephens - Paying for your love (Leo Mini) The Jaedes - Big Surprise (Athena LP) Dee Dee Warwick - You tore my wall down (Complete ATCO recordings CD) Shirma Rouse - L-O-V-E (from her great MP3 album of 2014 "Shout it out loud") Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - We get along (Daptone LP) Beverley Shaffer - Meet me halfway (Secret Stash LP "The One-derful! Collection") Charlene & The Soul Serenaders - Love changes (Volt) Cheers and Happy New Year! Steve.
  2. Agree that would most likely lead to more plays, but crazy when it sounds so good on the CD hey!
  3. Love going to venues where CD's / MP3s can also feature and make the most of some amazing previously unreleased dancers from last year including the likes of say:- - Dee Dee Warwick "You tore my wall down" (The complete Atco recordings double CD) - Julis Wright "I pray that things will change" (Kent CD "Brent...superb 60s Soul Sounds") - Chuck Jackson "Where did you go" (Kent CD "Satisfaction Guaranteed Motown Guys 1061-69") - The Natural Resources "If there where no you" / Toussaint McCall "I'll laugh till I cry" (Kent CD "Dore L.A. Soul sides" then also on Kent Select 45) - Dynamic Sounds Orchestra "Take me back" MP3 from their unreleased album (thanks again S.P.!) Even better if more brand new releases like Soulutions can get an airing as already rightly mentioned...eg tracks like "L-O-V-E" from Shirma Rouse MP3 album released late last year just superb I think. The remixed Preston Shannon 45 "The way I Love you" that Soul Junction released last year just brilliant too and loads of others. Okay maybe not for a busy main room but certainly smaller rooms. Here's to another great year of soul anyway . Steve

Can't leave this thread hanging with unlucky "13" posts today so Happy New Year all and if it's anything like last year for soul (events / releases new and old / meeting more people / swapping more CDs / hearing so many things for the first time etc etc) then I'll be very happy Cheers, Steve
  5. I had the same but seems Paypal picks up price before VAT as the actual amount on the Paypal email confirmation which follows is the higher (correct) amount. Thanks for starting this thread Ian...the Philly 40th box set is a genuine bargain and a great end to the year! Happy New Year all, Steve
  6. Received the new Valdons 45 through the door today "Just how much can one man stand" and absolutely stunning soul I think. Brilliant work guys and please keep doing what you're doing! All the best, Steve link here for anyone interested: https://shop.secretstashrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-valdons-just-how-much-can-one-man-stand
  7. Gimenez E) Thanks again, have a great Christmas and look forward to seeing you all at the next one first Sunday of Jan.
  8. ...and the fact that you get "Where did you go?" on the other side of the original 45 has got to make this one of the most soulful, most affordable, most almost everything releases ever. A mate gave me a "spare" copy a few years ago and I'll treasure it as long as I'm here.
  9. Great read that thanks and another top quality cd comp too!
  10. How good is this Chuck Jackson version of "where did you go"?! Certainly stopped the conversation in my car on Saturday night and thanks again Nicola for bringing it along...superb cd right through and yet another amazing release from Ace.
  11. Not that I needed a reminder, but this thread has also once again proved just how talented Curtis Mayfield was. Not only for the songs he wrote and sang himself or with others, but for songs like this which other artists sang. A great CD from 1995 "Curtis Mayfield's Chicago Soul" has so many on it, including the Major Lance recording of this song.
  12. Major Lance too I've just discovered! Brilliant.
  13. I didn't know that thanks. Brilliant having just listened and proves once again why this site and knowledge of everyone who uses it so good. Just love different versions of great songs. Cheers, Steve.
  14. The one and only (thankfully!) Brian Goucher told me about this one just last month then played it at the last Sunday Soul Sessions, so best thank him rather than me....something I do most weeks for the soul he's sharing. Agree though..this site is amazing for discovering more amazing soul. Cheers for noticing the playlists and hope to see you there one Sunday eve!
  15. Hi. Yes and this previous thread might help half way through it. Great LP. Cheers, Steve

Cant seem to find much more on this one and only 45 released by the them as far as I can tell in the mid 70's, other than this thread from 2007 and Sean's post in the middle...so if anyone else has any more info or knowledge of the lead or backing singers doing anything else? Thanks, Steve.
  17. Strewth...anyone got any good tips for reasonably priced insurance over and above standard house and contents? although guessing you have to provide insurers with updated lists and est values / photos etc from time to time, which could be hard work.
  18. I'll be happy to trade a lovely condition issue of "I'm not responsible" for her LP (+ a few hundred quid to go with the 45, depending on condition of the LP and sleeve) if anyone interested? Thanks, Steve.

Well I couldn't keep waiting for you to sell yours again . All the best, Steve
  20. Still looking out for this 45 if anyone can help? Thanks.
  21. Strewth I know I loved hearing everything at the time, but looking back at these 100 or so choices a couple of days later makes me appreciate once again how lucky we are to be able to pop down the road and hear soul like that on a Sunday night whilst having a pint or two and some banter. Great to hear you playing the Gary Griffin 45 after the story you told me about it Brian and this cool vid gets played almost daily in my house with the sound right up since you first introduced me to this one.
  22. Thanks again all for another top night of soul. I'll start the ball rolling on what was played this month (we're trying not to repeat too much at this night if we can help it!). Brian, Trevor, Pete and Russ will add theirs too hopefully Glenn Jones - Keep on doin' Theresa Davis ft Jerry Butler - I can't stop Bloodstone - Possible The Chestnut Brothers - Travelin' on Dee Dee Warwick - What manner of man Dee Dee Warwick - Where is that rainbow Carmelita - Rosebud Cooperettes - Win all your love Herman Davis - Gotta be loved Reggie Soul and the Soul Swingers - My world of ecstasy The Up Tights - How long must I wait for you Julius Wright - I pray that things will change Brewster Crew - I'm one who know Ebony Diamonds - I'm so lucky Bernadette Bascom - I don't wanna lose your love Patty Stokes - Is it true The Illusions - It's just an illusion Master Keys - Tears Talmadge Armstrong and the Escotts - Give it up Rob Davis - We are who we are Preston Shannon - The way I love you Alo Key - Let me throw my arms around you Willie Hutch - I'm gonna give you respect Dennis Lee - Sunday afternoon Cheers, Steve.
  23. Just rediscovered this great article from 2010: https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-news/the-epitome-of-sound-the-story-r2059
  24. Feels like a raised "#" or something? Never tire of hearing anyway.
