  1. Are the Esquires of "Get On Up" & "And Get Away" fame , featuring the Moorer brothers, still performing ??? And one time member Mill Edwards / Mill Evans ? And sister Betty Moorer of "Speed Up" fame ?
  2. How 'bout Spyder Turner ... or Freddie Hughes ???
  3. Of acts that are still with us and still performing and still have what it takes and who have elevated status on the rare soul scene , I can't understand why someone isn't speaking to Howard Tate and Garnett Mimms ???? How 'bout a double bill ? Both still going strong and Garnett Mimms looking absolutely great. Check this out .... https://funky16corners.wordpress.com/2008/0...ome-old-sounds/ Imagine hearing the opening chords of "Looking For You" and Garnett bursting into song, now that would be something !
  4. Jackie Ross at 20 quid ? Giving it away ! Someone bite his hand off quick !
  5. I've always maintained that the Willie and the Mighty Magnificents and Frankie Crocker 45's use the exact same basic instrumental backing track , but that Sylvia and Joe Robinson used creative licence in the studio by fiddling around with the one take of the track ... for example putting party noises on Frankie Crocker's record , not to mention speeding up the tape , and the sax too ... whereas on Willie and the Magnificents' record the speed is slower , the tambourines are brought up and Willie and the boys rap over the top of it all ... but I am convinced they have the exact same track !!! Anyone who knows the story of the Robinson's eccentric and rudimentary set up at All Platinum/Stang/Turbo would concede that this is entirely plausible.

Tony, is there more than one take of the Shirelles' "Look Away" ?
  7. PATRICE HOLLOAWAY-- BLACK MOTHER GOOSE--USA CAPITOL sol £5 Beats Sam Nesbitt's version everytime !!!
  8. .... and in its most desirable form it was issued on an Australian Invictus 7"
  9. Yep, that's right, Blowfly's version is disgustingly funny, but even more hilarious and comical (and a hell of a lot cleaner!) is the version by Archie Bell and the Drells where Archie turns the lyrics around and laments the fact that Uncle Sam has called him up for army duty just when he's got the biggest record on the planet , so there is poor Archie just ... sitting on the dock of the bay .... !!!!
  10. Anyone got any info on who the artists were ? Who were Stevens & Foster ? Did they record anything else ?
  11. Careful Ian, Mr Manship might even start offering "low doc" loans to down-at-heel soul collectors in order to allow them to bid ridiculous amounts of money on those auction items ...
  12. https://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...A:IT&ih=021 Well , blow me down , have a look at what this copy of the "The Champ" by the Mohawks went for on ebay the other day. Several questions here: * Issued of course on Cotillion in the US, but how many issues in the UK have there been of this record over the years ? The first in the UK was on blue Pama was it not ? * And does this particular UK issue justify the finishing price ? * The item description of this UK issue states "Reggae Version" ? Is this indeed a reggae version by the Mohawks - and is there any other "alternative" version or mix by the Mohawks - other than the original that we all know and love ? Or has this seller just incorrectly described it as a "reggae" record when it is in fact just the original version ? I expect our resident ska / reggae & UK label experts experts Pete Smith and Tony Rounce to add their weight here !
  13. Linda Jones ... the soul singer that that most overrated bit of white pop trash Janis Joplin always wanted to be but never even came close ...
  14. Who said there's a global financial crisis ?
  15. Latin Soul & Boogaloo music is and remains an inextricable part of the northern and rare soul scene ... as well as soul music's rich tapestry in general. Anyone who seeks to deny this fact is an ignorant fool. Old timers often tell me that Hector Rivera's "At The Party" and Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce" were as popular as any sound on the earliest northern scene, and then throughout the next 40 years various boogaloo tracks have weaved their way in and out of the northern scene. And this debate about white singers is just as stupid ... many of latin soul's greatest vocalists were in fact black (eg Jimmy Sabater) ... that is, if the colour of a person's skin happens to be the way you determine what is "soul" and what isn't.
  16. Just on this Isaac Hayes theme and the adaptation/appropriation of his songs, purely by chance I recently happened to throw on to the turntable the B side of the Pointer Sisters mid 70's funk classic on Blue Thumb - How Long (Betcha Got A Chick on the Side) and found a track entitled "Easy Days" which incredibly is a fantastic dreamy cross-over VOCAL version to Ike's instrumental "Ellie's Love Theme" one of the most loved tunes from the Shaft soundtrack. So Easy Days by the Pointer Sisters is my crossover tip for the moment ! Have a listen: https://au.youtube.com/watch?v=kXduHkUs29o
  17. The Casualeers " When I'm In Your Arms " released on Laurie , superb record ... if you can keep your mind on the music that is ...
  18. PM'd you Mark
  19. The vocal version of Soul Sauce to play is that of jazz organist Shirley Scott !
  20. Also begs the question, was Connie Austin related to the other King label artist of the time - and James Brown alumni - Leon Austin ... "the Mighty Burner" ??? In fact, the plot now thickens a little ... if you read this about Leon's allegedly violent disposition https://stepfatherofsoul.blogspot.com/2005/...-his-house.html and his interesting background https://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/lates...ciatedies.shtml ... maybe just maybe there is a connection between the two artists ??
  21. Like Sean, I've never heard that story about Connie Austin before and I don't think much of note about Connie was contained in Kent's CD booklets on the King label releases Vols 1 & 2. Connie's version of Ball of Fire is superior to Marva's ... but only just. And don't forget the other side of the Connie Austin record , the stomping mover "She Made A Mistake".
  22. Do you have both records ?
  23. There's a nice version of this song by Aussie blue-eyed soulster Robie Porter on the US Diamond label. Didn't Roy Hamilton also do a version of this ?
  24. No , it is definitely Van McCoy , albeit singing in a slightly lower key than usual from his solo recordings.
  25. But with the greatest respect Chris, why does that piss you off ? No one forces you to buy their records, if you don't like their price, or their apparent logic, just don't buy. It's always your choice. Very simple really.
