  1. could cargo and ballast not concievably have been the same thing ? killing two birds with one stone ?
  2. sorry , just read headline , i,m out.
  3. what are they?
  4. Minshull did used to play Garnett Mimms every week without fail , almost a signature record for him aroud 4.30 5 a.m ish ,in 76, loved the rec ord like no other at that time , picked up a uk demo in the record bar for thirteen qiud and within the hour swapped it for a u.k issue and fifteen qiud , so a garnett mimms frree and two pounds profit ! would i have applauded the playing of it ? most definately, yes ( heard it so many times over the years that it does not have the effect on me that it used to but well worth its top twenty place in the top 500 )
  5. Cheers Jim, all the best for the upcoming nights , i apologise for my earlier negative comments, if i was out there , i would really love to attend something like this , hope it is a massive success , Mike.
  6. DUBAI SOUL CLUB TOP TEN (?) Delcos "Arabia" Drifters "Ive got sand in my shoes " Kiki dee "On a magic carpet ride " Saundra Mallet and the Vandellas "Camel walk " Eddie Regan " Playin hide and Sheik" Edward Hamilton and the Arabians " Baby dont you weep " Martha and the Vandellas "Heatwave" Exits "You got to have money " Stevie Wonder " Castles in the sand " Maria Muldar " Midnight at the Oasis ".
  7. Dosent really appeal to me this, Dubai has to be one of the most soulless places on the planet , the idea of having Russ Winstanley Djing on a rooftop at xmas ? The musics spiritual home is in the industrial heartlands of Northern England and the big Northern cities in the USA. , It fits there , resonates with the surroundings , wouldnt go if you paid me.
  8. Two books i found very interesting WHAT THE MUSIC SAID , MARK ANTHONY NEAL and THE DEATH OF RHYTHM AND BLUES , NELSON GEORGE . Neither book is about the Northern scene as such , more about the evolution of black popular music in America . The first one was only published in America as far as i am aware ( could be mistaken) sure there would be copies on Amazon. The Nelson George Book pinpoints the decline of the soul sound from the mid seventies .
  9. Yes i agree, if they are trashed in a particular hard to define way, (like the one above ) , others can seem spoiled with the slightest mark or blemish , strange .
  10. Yes , Siz would definately have djed there , also i remember Hovis from Oldham or Rochdale djing , Think Siz and Tony Just took over where Martin Christie left off with their Sunday all dayers at The Ardri in Hulme , I think round about this time the pair of em cashed in on the 79 mod revival by slanting some events that way .
  11. Dj ed at the Carousel maybe half a dozen times ,Martin Christie was the promoter , Bumped into Martin a couple of years back , what a rum c*** he was !also ran all nighters at Rafters in the early eighties. And in the late seventies, Friday northern sessions at at a club just a bit down from Shorts on Brown street, which was at one time known as the Stax club. .
  12. Surely the essence is the effect the music has upon the listener, its ability to touch your soul, transport you back to a magic world and time now long gone, the emotional connection and identification . dancing, ovo arguments , Clubs , djs, promoters , personalities , badges , fashions , etc all peripheral to the central experience of feeling the music deep inside .
  13. Thanks for putting that up Paul .
  14. At some point in early 77 i think , the oldies all nighter had gone massive so fortnightly allnighters on a friday were run( with limited success but maybe five or six hundred in ) they must have been profitable because at one point it was decided to open up mister ms only for all nighters when neither the main oldies or the fortnightly ones were running ..... so i thought i would give it a go, anyway , it was obvious from the start that it had not been advertised properly and only 9 ( nine ) people turned up ! After about an hour everyone present realised this was going to be a dead loss so it was closed at about one a.m. problem was i had come on the train from manchester , was wide awake( ahem) and had no way of getting home . another guy from little hulton was in the same boat . A Guy called Billy Mac from wigan and his mate Robbo heard about this and the four of us went back to Billys for the evening , at his place the night really got going , remember his sister and her boyfriend coming back from a night out and giving me a bottle of vodka to work through , A forgotten chapter in the casinos history.
  15. The less the English heritage blue plaque committee hears about that particular activity , the better.
  16. Tezza, yes ok concede the point about a heritage site , not sure about your last paragraph though, you wrote : "Northern soul is not as important to the rest of the world as it is to us, we should remember that and embrace it . It is ours and we should protect it from the profiteerers and exploitation brigade . Remember with fondness but dont put it on a pedestal to be a target for the unbelievers ": ? not too sure what has been proposed would have this kind of effect.
  17. I like the idea , actually surprised it has never been done before , As for heritage , yes it is very much a heritage site , no doubt in my mind about that , would also be willing to contribute . No need for anyones name on it , London has these blue badges on every corner , Manchester has quite a few nowardays as well, Fairly certain that the site will be given some kind of official recognition in the future , how far in the future i would not like to say . dont think this is attaching too much importance to the idea, after all many people(including myself) are into local history and you know , it is only a plaque, and if nothing more will mark the spot for future generations of a very colourful piece of the towns history.
  18. Plenty of good stuff in there , but it was patchy , is it definately dec 79? i would have dated that playlist about four to six months later, sure stuff like the phantom janitor and reuben howell were massive then, maybe they were being played but there full impact had not been felt . The Saturday nights were poorly attended especially after the oldies all nighters , but the Friday nights were monsters .best all nighter for my money at that time was Clouds in Edinburgh .
  19. how can i get some extra organ?
  20. Well spotted Tony, the tone arms are different, well that makes three of them out there at least ( unless the tone arm was changed at some point )
  21. See Ian Levine in a different light now.
  22. Looks like at some point his neck chains could be a problem, the smaller the moving parts the better . would technics just make one pair, ? would imagine they are worth a fortune ( and cost a fortune to make ) if there are only two of em ,
  23. A man of renown should never wear brown .
  24. Sunny soul, so you had a part in organising that night , what a small world , what year did these nights begin? were these the start of the thriving Australian scene we hear about today , what kind of numbers were and are currently involved ? have there ever been sounds that have only been played in oz ? is it mainly an oldies scene etc, etc.. also, what do you know about " sharpies " , to my understanding this is some kind of working class youth culture peculiar to Australia, are there any parallels to our mods and skinheads and do they follow a certain music ...
