  1. With 2014 nearly over , what do you think about the northern scene for 2015 ?.Will there be another twenty or so "nights" appearing in your neighbourhood ?. Will prices rocket(again ) for rare soul 45s ? . Personally I cant predict how "healthy" the scene will be by this time next year , can you ?
  2. Colins point about playing to the crowd and allowing for the different "tastes " should always be the number one rule for DJs , there are more ATB DJS out there these days and why not .

I believe the OVO venues will survive , the rest well that's exactly what they are the rest, I spend hours ( sometimes in work time /sorry boss ) searching for that extra special tune to buy and play , I don't spend a fortune but still come up with something different on each outing and that's the beauty of the OVO nights , you never know what you are going to get and long may they continue
  4. We charge £3 OTD at City Centre Soul at the Old Nags Head in Manchester and to be honest its an average price for admission in our neck of the woods ,am sure with all the competition we are seeing any price increase would be a disaster ,however we always have a very decent guest we play all on OVO ,its completely ATB and so far so good its worked , its definitely the love and not the money that most venues exist ,. you just have to see my bank balance for proof positive, those little bits of plastic just aint cheap anymore ..............
  5. as a warm up DJ the floor hasn't started by the end of my sets ! , seriously don't think there is a reason this happens , its the mood of the night !!
  6. Yes its the "slept on " tracks , there must be lots out there
  7. I suppose I have a bee in my bonnet about overpriced records on todays scene , not meant to offend here ,but its definitely becoming harder to have a decent play box without a mortgage.
  8. hi Meant individual records priced at £25 or less !, ill get my coat
  9. With the huge prices that we are seeing on the scene today , has anyone (beside different strokes ) tried this at their venues ? , playing tunes OVO that have not upset the Bank balance. if so what would be your £25 spot ?.
  10. Very sorry , hope they are returned , devastating
  11. at £120 its a bit more that I expected, will have to pass and pay my landlord instead this week !! , did expect the £ 80 mark on this one , but its a supply and demand scenario I suppose .
  12. Yes , That's the problem typing during work !!!

I blame the TV,If they brought back Its a Knockout ,half of these venues would be empty / closed , having said that I haven't got a gig on the 27th , am I doing something wrong ?

Agree above there is some poor events , but there are great events , whether too many I am unsure only time will tell if they survive , you certainly have to work at it too get any sort of following and offering great ATB on original vinyl works for me . there is definitely a growing number of "handbag " events , but if the punters want it , who are we too judge , I still believe if you play quality soul music you will come through, complacency has no place today .
  17. The good nights / days continue to strive and do well the not so good go away eventually , but there is no harm in spreading the faith and why not give some aspiring Djs a go .At the end of the day its the paying public that will choose, I remember the brilliant rare soul night held a few miles away from me a few years back ,great Djs superb sets but very few punters I am afraid you cant win them all and I can say is just enjoy

  20. Just reading this whilst eating my Hovis Butties . I tell you what its Grimm up north today !
  21. I think we all suffer from this , its the "strange world of northern soul " and never described fully in any TV documentary , a friend and one the best collectors in Manchester recently told me " if you ever feel like stopping buying , give me a ring , and we can talk it through " , I am afraid I am hooked and subject to me remaining solvent ( or sort of , until I retire ) then cant see me giving this up anytime soon , anyway who needs to eat and buy clothes !!

my 18 month old grandson recently walked past me whilst I was watching TV firmly clutching two of my prized 45s I had just purchased and left out , it took a large piece of chocolate cake to prise these away from him !! .Does anyone know if chocolate fingerprints on labels affect the price ???
  23. Best wishes for a speedy recovery
  24. i would hate to be classed as a "wedding dj " LOL , and always play something differant along with classics but again the policy should always be based on what the attendees want /demand , otherwise you can be left with that age old question " i wonder why that night closed ?", In any case Keep on Keeping on , every night should have "something special " that makes it unique and more importantly pleases the crowd PS I was getting more money when i was a Wedding DJ !!!!!!
