Getting to nighters
Reminds me of a night at Blackpool Mecca, me and my mate, about fifteen/sixteen. Missed our coach so hitched back to Rochdale. Second lift dropped us in Moss Side at about 4:00 am. We were approached by a gang of about six brothers. "United or City?" was the question we had to answer for safe passage. Scary night!

Does anyone know who designed any of the sew on patches?
Hi Lewis, I designed two patches for Wigan. What would you like to know?

I am starting a Northern Soul night in Chengdu, China. Does anyone know what the PRS situation is? I'd be grateful for any advice or referrals. Cheers.

This England question about music
Yes Paul, the music was dubbed over. The filming lasted for a good few hours so you couldn't say they were dancing to a particular track. A lot of folk wouldn't dance at all. Would you if you were smashed off your box and people were shining arc-lights on you? Terrible, terrible night. End of an era, etc, etc

So this Odyssey by Homer is just about getting home from the Trojan wars back in the day. If so.......................................... ;-)

Are we really gonna let it die with us?
Yeah I agree if you are talking about collectors but let's be honest, most folk are not collectors. Even in the early 70's a lot of dj's were fed records"discovered" by someone else who had done the dirty work. Btw what's so bad about the early 70's? That's when most of the best music was unearthed isn't it?
-
Are we really gonna let it die with us?
That's only true if you are a collector. The vast majority of people didn't/don't collect records thank god! :-)

Are we really gonna let it die with us?
I have recently returned to dj'ing after about forty years. I live abroad and have sold most of my collection. When I dj I have a memory stick with about 2,000 tracks on it. I don't have a playlist but maybe a few sounds that I want to play. When I used to dj I would have about 200 sounds to pick from but now, with such a vast repertoir, it's a lot easier to follow the dancefloor and keep it busy. I try to stick to sounds that I have owned but......... The (mainly) old crowd that I play for make requests (in fact I print request sheets and scatter them round the club) and I have never been one to refuse a request unless it's really inappropriate - say Dock of the Bay or something. I was asked for Stanky Get Funky, which is a sound which I would never have bought, and get requests for rarer stuff which I would never have been able to buy. I play them. I was in England a few years ago and went to an ovo soul night, there was some good music played but the dancefloor was totally ignored, I found this a massive culture shock. Any definition of Northern Soul must include the word 'dance'. The newer, younger people want to hear music they can dance to and it's a bit silly to try to tell them they can't because I don't own a particular piece of vinyl - it means nothing to them unfortunately. Back in the day we all went to nighters where pressings, bootlegs and EMIdisks were played, didn't we? During the week we all listened to ilegal tapes made from live venues didn't we? Would we have stopped going to nighters if the sounds were more readily available? I doubt it. I have only one queasy feeling about playing rips and downloads and that is PRS, which let's face it has always been a bit of a grey area. A few that were requested at my last gig: George Blackwell~Can't Lose My Head Greater Experience~Don't Forget to Remember Ty Karim~You Just Don't Know Bill Bush - I'm Waiting

Just to keep the record straight. Whilst I did contact all the Wigan DJ's, only Richard proved to be a true gent and gave unconditional help and assistance. Many thanks to him.

What is the name of that record? Thanks

Northern Soul Holiday On Ice
Manship's Real Deal People selling records leads to entertaining haggling between the owners and potential buyers. On `Manship's Real Deal' Northern expert and presenter John manship is party to that give and take, the results of which can produce big windfalls or big busts. Episodes feature collectors trying to sell their items (often with some historic value) to dealers, but if the two sides cannot reach an agreement on a price, the seller walks away from the bargaining table and takes the item to the auction site, hoping to make more money than the dealer offered. Of course, placing one's trust in a positive auction outcome is a gamble in itself. (Only the names have been changed)

Happy Playing Mp3's And Cd's Nottingham
No. It's illegal. The law was passed at the XIV international congress in Blackpool and became law in 1992. "Insofar as vinyl shall be the only material allowed for music purposes at a 'do' - notwithstanding the attendant dealers are allowed to sell all materials (including CD's, mp3's and reproduction badges), promoters and DJ's are to ensure that all vinyl is from the original release of the record and NOT any subsequent re-issue. This is to be enforced irrespective of the paying publics desire to hear music what they like." The spirit of the law was to prevent any recurrence of "The Todmorden Incident". I hope that answers your query

Is It True No One Was Ever Prosecuted For Drugs At Wigan Casino
I feel genuinely sorry for Russ. I have heard other, recent instances of his progressive fabrications. It could be indicative of early onset dementia, I feel sure he wouldn't make these things up. Perhaps someone who knows him could have a helpful word?

Newbies And The Current Scene
You've been given some bad advice mate. Dance how you want. It's not a competition, and never was. Most people just enjoyed dancin' to the music, and none of us were as good as we now believe we were Don't forget, white guys can't dance anyway! Just enjoy what you hear in your head - fuck everyone else.

Rarest 45 On Coloured Vinyl?
1974, on top-deck of 400 E. Lancs express to Bolton, Les from Ashton showed me his Bobby Patterson - My Baby... The sexiest thing this thirteen year old had seen outside of my mums Littlewoods catalogue. Could never understand why they didn't do more of them. Was it a major cost issue, anyone?
