  1. This is a very sad day for NS a genuine guy who loved his music and loved his friends RiP ML
  2. I will go where I want when I want and there is nobody on this scene capable of stopping me ML
  3. There are thousands of details thousands of punters who know the truth who have heard and seen what happened at various venues over the years they are the forgotten majority , Im not slagging Sam of at all he might be a fine human being I don’t know him that well but I do know that I am not fond of his spots and some of the music he plays and this is a soul forum isn’t it? Everybody,s got their own unique opinion and that’s mine and I will stick by it . It’s nothing personal we will have to agree to disagree, if I had to go into detail now that would be something else. ML
  4. It should matter what he plays, he,s supposed to be entertaining and kicking a vibe in for the crowd not playing maybe one tune in a full set for some anorak that’s what’s up with this scene it does matter, And the scene will continue to decline unless most people demand it matters, ML
  5. Hi Tomangoes It’s not for me to say what records I’ve broke it’s for other people to remember I wouldn’t be so vain as to say I was the first to play a tune but I do know this that I’ve played many a tune what well done Dj, s have come to ask me what it was , what label it was on , how much was it? And they hadn’t heard it before that’s enough for me. Come to think of it I broke six records one night when I dropped my box, ML
  6. Hi Tomangoes i don’t remember rubbish records but I will say this if the question had been Sam,s worst records you would have needed a set of Encyclopedias to list them all .I know from experience over the years I’ve had to follow him on after his spot on numerous occasions to a dance floor where the only thing missing was a bit of tumbleweed blowing across it . I’m just doing a little bit of Arron Neville I’m telling it like is , To much Emperor,s new Clothes on this site instead of honesty if you like Soul Sam,s music good luck to you . I Don’t . That’s what as ruined this scene lack of truth I didn’t ask the question just gave an honest answer to it. There are a little too many false idols on this scene It’s the Music what’s the boss. Again no Offence meant just the truth . ML
  7. Don’t want to sound disrespectful but he,s also played thousands off records that were absolutely rubbish , never ever heard him play a full hour of good tunes yet, Rose tinted glasses spring to mind, Anyway each to their own. No offence meant just the truth ML
  8. Rr Hi Roburt Billy Walker made a few popcorn records his self besides opening all the baked potatoe fast food outlets he opened one in Wigan circa 1965 66 It was a great time for soul artists and in my opinion was the real Golden Age of Soul most of the artists listed live in London found their way up north to the Working class cities of the midlands North East and North West to leave the path for the start and beginning of NS it was a magic time with magic music and magic Artists, some of them loved it over here that much they never went home and made the UK their base those who did return home kept on coming back they were all in their Prime then, I’d love to have a time machine go back and see them again just like I seen a lot of them the first time that would be Soul Heaven ML
  9. I never bought a 45 unless I liked it so investment money wise wasn’t in my thought process just loving the sound and if Dj.ing letting other people like the sounds and the way they were put together was enough for me but different people do things for different reasons that’s what makes the world go round so everybody has loads of different reasons why they bought or buy 45,s if they like buying let them get on with it there are lots of worse hobbies and things they could do or buy. ML
  10. Well said Steve people want to lighten up you can’t change history just make sure you learn from it otherwise bad history will happen again that way you can’t blame ignorance if you’ve learned from it and Music should always be and in my world always will be free from all that racial nonsense ML
  11. Martha has not been able to sing or hit the right notes since 1969 terrible voice live. ML
  12. Your first 3 records depends on your time Dj,ing who,s been on before you, Is the venue full of lightweight, middleweight, or heavyweight or a mixture of all types of soulies, Then you make your mind up to what you think should be your 3 opening records which you kick your set off with and each one after that should be good as the one before, Always reading the the reaction on the dance floor and in the venue of the patrons and changing direction with the music if needed. Sadly I’m afraid a great many so called NS DJ,s can’t do this and this problem affects a great many so called big name DJ,s as well as the new upstarts, to be brutally honest some of them couldn’t put bacon and egg together, it’s all about them and not the customer, and it stops the scene from being exciting , it just becomes stop , Start no flow, It’s very disappointing for the patrons who find it boring and are losing their energy for turning out like they used too, These are fundamental , basic problems that can be overcome or can they? Are these Dj,s unable to do the fundamentals ? If so NS has got problems, it will just keep limping on with no drive, NS has got all the tools, the records but a hell of a lot of bad drivers to deliver it in an exciting and uplifting manner, NS is becoming Ground hog day multiplied by a thousand, A big Respect to All Soulies everywhere Mick L
  13. Yes I can remember Martyn playing it around that time, I had heard it before , , but not played out at a nighter as such, but Martyn is correct after he played it at Tony,s it gathered momentum and became a mimi cult dancer It was played that much it became annoying LoL, it always sounded to me like a catchy pop tune with a little bit of soul, but a lot of people loved it and to them it's what mattered, it's funny it's not been used on TV adverts yet, but don't hold your breath. Mick L
  14. Seasons Greetings and Peace and Tranquility to Mike and the Soul Source crew for running a top site. God Bless Mick L
  15. Why talk about the first 3 they should be good anyway as well as the next 22 the whole hour should be good start to finish or that should be the aim to entertain the crowd and take them on a journey of musical delight away from reality just like it was when you first started out on the Soul highway of life , There is far to much of stop, start, good record bad record no flow to a set killing the vibe, The music should set the pace The DJ should be good at driving the course I'm afraid a great many DJ,s can't do that , They might have a few good records, but they lack skills in building atmosphere and reading a crowd, It becomes all about them at the expense of the SOULIES. The whole Scene needs a reality check to get it back on course. You can't always make it perfect but you could make it much better than it is if people faced up to Reality. The Music is fantastic And I mean proper Soul music it's the people involved in delivering it what,s the let down A very Happy and Soulful Christmas Mick L
  16. The best laid plans of Mice and Men " Don't give them any cheese" Mick L
  17. If I'm not mistaken our own heavyweight boxer from the early 1960,s the original blonde bomber Billy Walker made a popcorn record or two' copies of American originals , Mick L
  18. I never knew what I was going to play first last or in the middle it all depended on the crowd in the venue, what kind of mood were they in, what time you were on, As a live act DJ you should be able to adjust to the above and adjust accordingly what your going to play if you can't do that you shouldn't be deejaying get a job on the Radio, I've said it before and I will say it again it's not the jokes it's the way you tell them , Sometimes it's not the tunes it's the way you play them and what order you play them in, I'm afraid the truth is a great many DJ,s can't do this they rely on a few so called big tunes to save their spot instead of giving the audience or at least trying to give them a full hour which the SOULIES deserve. keep on Pressing on Mick L
  19. If alcohol doesn't suit you don't drink it, If drugs don't suit you don't swallow them , but don't be judgemental on people who can handle their drink and drugs behave theirselfs and have fun , If you start that game you might as well join your nearest evangestical vegetarian club, If your a good promoter you would not wear aggravating drunks or people smashed of their heads upsetting people , if these things happened at my promotions they were removed from the premises as discreetly as possible so as not to disturb decent people, it's not what goes wrong it's how you handle it, There were always alcohol free venues years ago that were successful, but that was when we were all a lot younger with tetesterone and adrenaline to spare plus the advantages of mothers little helpers if you wished to participate. Move on to the present, You now have the choice of a alcoholic drink in most venues to socialise or relax nobody pours it down your throat, or if your still up for the other stuff good luck to you, But let's not start preaching and teaching it's too late in the day for that Peace and Tranquility Mick L
  20. Hi Roburt Interesting about the Canadians backing American artists around this time, I went to see Chuck Berry live at the Cavern circa February or early March 1967 and his backing band were the Canadians, I was always curious about who they were at the time ML
  21. Hi Steve Lets shoot all the DJ.s ,shoot all the Record dealers, declare year zero for Soul and start again, But in another 50 years you would probably find that we would be back in the same position, The best Music in the World ( Soul Music) is there to be loved and appreciated, It is Human beings what let it down . When anything in this world is successful, The parasites follow, Greedy Promoters, Egotistical wannabe DJ.s ,Selfish Venue Owners, Punters who have forgot about the music, Cynical snobbish know all,s, Like I said The Music will always be good it is the Human element what lets it down. The Music is bigger than any Promoter , any DJ, Any Record Dealer, Just remember that we didn't make the music , The music made us what we are for better or worse? Mick L
  22. 1967 was one of my favourite years in Soul music, half the charts at the time in the uk at the time was soul orientated, There were soul clubs in every town in the North west , there was allnighters on every weekend no more than 20 miles from where you lived. Is was a real live underground soul scene in 1967 probably peaking from 63, 64, 65, 66, I was 16 at the time, it was a majic time for Soul !You would have had to be there to feel it, I wouldn't have missed it for nothing what a time for Soul ML
  23. I worked on Silcocks waltzer in these years and we had 90per cent of all the above records , great times with great music ML
  24. More bad news, somebody needs to put a spanner in that conveyor belt, slow it down a little, RIP Dave ML
