What's Your Favourite 45 Picture Sleeve ?
Was especially fond of that Seven Souls Italian fisheye lens sleeve after finding one at a NYC record fair for $10, seller was a weird Polish geezer who had all his 45's in vertical stacks by alphabet so the S pile was particularly tall and wobbly, luckily he had an unusual European Small Faces sleeve on the top so figured worth the effort. Ended up selling it via JM, on his old site desigh was the very1st picture that loaded on his main page which was always worth a smile. Not as good a record but the Italian sleeve for their version of Fire is also pretty eye-catching Fave sleeve here is probably the French Paul Sindab ep with You dropped your candy in the sand, although also a sucker for the Italian issue of Herbie Goins Cruisin as it looks like he's having the time of his life at a soul party in the photo. Funniest are 2 linked to artists we had on at Dig Deeper - first off was Tami Lynn was not at all impressed to find out her French ep has a picture of a white girl on it instead of her, ouch, and then Harvey Scales when I presented him with a French PS which, instead of any depiction of him, is simply a close up of....a sofa, wha?, have a great photo of him looking at it utterly non-plussed

Mystiques / Mystics
Well seeing as you're flying in for our Walter & Admerations / Green Berets show this week will be happy to hear more of the story Bob, will be spinning the 45 there obv!! Hey, if possible can you do me a favour, I just got the Devils "Love and understanding" on Cuca but still haven't heard their other, know you have one so if there's any chance you could bring with you or wing a soundfile (the uptempo side, not the harmony) would be great, def need to hear it!

Mystiques / Mystics
Just picked up a (mint) copy of the very fine Mystics on Orr "Put out the fire", 1st pressing of the Mystiques on Twinight with the same title, per the very knowledgable chaps from Eccentric Soul this was thought to be only a 50 pressing (name then changed to avoid confusion with the other Mystics on Teak-o), anyone know if this is true / any copies ever come up?

Speed Records (Latin Soul)
Obviously Nataab backwards = (Mr Joe) Bataan Have that Pussycat single, it's a great catchy dancer but the lyrics are a bit Benny Hill - "Searching for pussy all over town", subtle it's definitely not!

Rare 60's Originals For Sale
Picked up a mint Sammy King down in Louisiana earlier this year, "Moody" is just stunningly good

Charles Spurling, Otis Rush, Lee Rogers, The Fabulous Playboys
Not selling but have both the Oscar Perry (and don't play it slowed down either!) and the Charles Spurling, actuallythink the flip of CS is way better than the Zone side, Let me be a stepping soul, amazing record, James Brown production so will be putting in the playlist for this weekend as me and Honky are putting Marva Whitney on stage here so obvious connection there.

My Baby Loves To Boogaloo
Sorry Seb, don't rate the King George w/ the Harlem Kiddies version too too much (but his "Please grow up" track on the other hand is amazing!), but as well as having a copy of Lewise Bethune have tracked her down here - name on label is a mis-spelling btw - and hoping to get her on stage at a future Dig Deeper

What If You Win It Cheap And They Won't Sell?
Could be worse: this is about a copy of the Es-Shades: "We know of 6, plus one which was destroyed by a collector/dealer from Ohio who became enraged when he realised he had sold the record too cheaply on eBay. He snapped the incredible ultra-rare 45 in two and sent us the pieces just to prove his point - see scan. So much for Ohio's musical heritage."

The Gems - I'll Be There - Riverside Ever Booted?
Bit of trivia: Lewise - real name Louise, they simply mis-spelled it on her Sack 45 - Bethune of My baby likes to boogaloo fame was the lead on this, she's still going strong over the river from here in NJ, we've been trying to get her on stage so fingers crossed

Flashback - Derek Martin
Nope, saying a) don't buy into playing carvers out if you're open to more than traditional soul there's another version of this track you can get to own if you hear it and find you like it. Hope you do, no foul if you don't!

Flashback - Derek Martin
Can't wait to see your playlist, Mello Souls, Junior McCants and Frank Wilson too I'm sure, awesome. Loved your logic that you playing it for 30 of your mates is somehow bigger exposure than a track that everyone knows Butch spins regularly and everyone on the scene knows, let alone a cd that anyone in this day and age who loves great and rare soul music can easily figure out exists and buy for themselves online in a couple of keystrokes, insanely laughable, thanks for that one. Are you going to tape Butch's entire next set and carve it so you can rescue all his other rarest records from such tragic musical oblivion too? Give it a break. Boring subject anyway, the whole for/against carver argument has been repeated on dozens of these threads so don't waste your time or breath. Just figured you'd at least appreciate more of the story behind the track seeing as the one - and only - thing we can at least agree on is yes, it's great.

Flashback - Derek Martin
Here's the story as far as I know it: there are 3 different acetates of the DM, but on 2 of them the studio technician messed up and the first 20-30 seconds are recorded way low until they crank the dial up, so really only the 1 with the sound constantly high all the way through is any good. All 3 were at Rich Rosen's in Vegas about 12 years ago, but by the time I got there Butch (I believe it was him) had already bought the first, Rich being Rich of course he wanted the same money for either of the others despite the sound quality, so obviously declined the "kind" offer. But he did have the studio listings showing that there were indeed only these. Years went by and was playing some oddball stuff out and about when ears picked up, found an unknown blue-eyed garage version, not soul but still a winner, by the Noon Express - kept quiet on it for a year or two while tracking down others, even one copy in a picture sleeve, played it out a lot here in NY and always went down great, eventually sold one to Rob Bailey back in the UK who put it on one of Le Beat Bespoke comps so word got out, goes for about $300 when it shows now. Which is a lot better alternative than admitting to playing carvers off comps

Joe Lewis - Teach Me Right Now - Northern
And happy to say the vg- one cleaned up a treat, sounded great out this weekend

Joe Wilson - Getting Plays?
Wondering why this has jumped in value so much, got a clean one off ebay - well described, reputable seller etc - for all of $25, so bit surprised at this, especially given how scuffed it sounds, has it made it onto some comp / playlist or was it just a lucky seller with 2 completely bonkers bidders? https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=400057504723

Jonathan Capree / Gloria Hill / Edith Brown
How many Edith Brown's floating around/ who else is playing it??? I have a minter that was formerly owned by Matt Finewine, you can still download it for a listen on a few of his excellent archived shows at wfmu.org, both sides are great. Also had a Jonathan Capree that think was the only one to go through ebay but sold it earlier this year to Italy.

Lucky Lou Discography
Have had the TNJ's one a few times, really like it, also have one other on label, Perry Stovall, "Stronger than the Hong Kong flu", mod oddball sound

Dean Jones - Women Ska De La De Da - Valliant
Play this out regularly here in NYC, belter, yes it's on the lp which is easy to pick it up but it's the 45 you need and no excuse not to at this price!

Lee Fields - My World Is Empty
We put him on stage here for an amazing show at Dig Deeper in April, he was devastatingly good, even did Take Me Back live, a-stounding!
-
Brand New Faces
I love all 3 versions, laugh at the lame carping over which one to "choose", but highlight was recently first hearing Jimmy Burns sing it live in Chicago, talk to him about the other versions which surprisingly he didn't really know of, and then play the BNF's for the dancefloor there all on the same night, hard to beat.

Jack Jacobs On Libra - I Believe It's Alright
Unplayed warehouse copy of this modern indemander, great vocals, just sold today for $458 - see link below, still has soundfile but also on refosoul, instead you can have one for a rather more reasonable $300 (and hope the person who just paid that much on ebay doesn't kick himself reading this! ), $5 p&p anywhere, paypal only. https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=310146698941
