Need Some Ideas - What To Do About A Problem
Stateside replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Hi Pete, I've been buying stuff from you for years and I don't know why people have to reserve things. You either want it or you don't. You have my card details and you charge me, straightforward. I don't mind paying by CC because you always enclose the slip and it never has the card number displayed so it is totally secure. If people haven't got the money to buy it they shouldn't contact you. If they prefer to pay by cheque then give them 3 or 4 days otherwise it goes to the next person who asked for it. Kev My only complaint is the self adhesive glue on those mailers you use is a b*****d to get open and you can never re-use them - I end up tearing them to shreds. -
Found it - In Bill Dahl's book "Motown the golden years" he says that Simpson anonymously filled in for Tammi so skilfully that no one was the wiser on hits "What you gave me" and posthumously on "The Onion Song" Happy now !

Thanks again, She does a brilliant job of it and I'm sure if it had been kept a secret we would have been none the wiser. Kev

Thanks Tone, You put that with such authority - is it documented somewhere? Kev

On the current thread of Marvin Gaye it reminded me of the story that when Tammi Terrell was too ill to finsh the MG & TT "Easy" album Valerie Simpson apparantley finished off the vocals. I have tried to see if I can spot which tracks she might be singing on but can't. Is it a myth or can someone identify which tracks they think Valerie is singing on.

I think you are right, He always wanted to be a crooner and I have to confess that "Try it Baby" is a particular favourite of mine for that style of record, not his best but a firm favourite. "I heard it through the grapevine" had the biggest impact on me as I had just started to buy soul music and I remember leaving the arm up on the record player to that one. Also "wherever I lay my hat". Most of his early stuff didn't get to me until I started collecting and looking back at his career. Having said all that I kind of stopped listening to him after Trouble Man and totally hated his duet album with Diana Ross. It is a problem I have, that I go off people when they get mass appeal and you hear their stuff on the radio all the time.

Great Debate, I used to be a club dj in the 70's playing predominantly funk and still have quite a lot of stuff . At the same time I was going to Wigan and the stuff I would listen to would be northern or deep soul. There are some really fantastic funky tracks like the "Dramatics - Get Up, Get Down" which I used to hear on AFN, Jackson Sisters - "I believe in miracles", Lynn Collins - "Think", which is awsome,Creative Source - "Who is she", but there are some real repetitive things out there like James Brown's 70's stuff in particular ( I know he did ballads etc, but the bulk of his stuff was dance with a similar riff). Remember him accusing David Bowie of ripping him off when he did "Fame" so he brought out "Hot" using the identical riff and said sue me. It is generally repetitive, but certain Northern tracks turn me right off for their repetition, eg.Just Brothers - Sliced Tomatoes (should be called "Sliced Wrists") Tried to think of more but couldn't. Jazz Funk however is a much better option with tons of accomplished musicians all playing on each other's albums and some fantastic vocalists, tons of stuff that I would call the Northern Soul of the 21st century

I bought a load of albums(all dj copies) from a german guy who claimed they came from AFN - got some crackers like Anthony White, Willie Hutch's rca stuff, tons of Philly stuff I know BBC Radio merseyside didn't keep an extensive library before the 70's and they had to requisition them from London and they would take 4/5 days to arrive. it would list the dates requisitioned and by whom.

I have an mp3 file of it which I can post up when I get home if you haven't heard it. Is a great track but don't think it has been played much - wouldn't mind a copy myself, I don't think it is expensive - YET!!

I sold a mint copy of Patrice Holloway -"Love and Desire" issue copy on UK Capitol in 76 for £40 and bought it again on a UK demo for £200 last year so not that much of an investment if I'd kept it. I would have made more if I had stuck it in the building society for 30 yrs.................

I don't think these two can rival them for vocal strength but they were pretty instrumental in testing out vocals on tons of motown records before they were assigned to particular artists as well as backing singers and even had a couple of their own releases on VIP. Helen & Kay Lewis - The Lewis Sisters Also prolific songwriters - "Just walk in my shoes" 18_Don_t_Make_Me_Live_Without_Your_Love_The_Lewis_Sisters.mp3

I may have missed it but was this ever played anywhere - It comes off their "Easy" album which has California Soul on it. It has the same lyrics and tune(but not the same backing track) as "Your love can save me" by The Marvelettes but obviously has a slight change where they sing "only your love can save this poor heart of mine" Funny how you can have records in your collection that you don't discover for thirty odd years. Even dancing to the Marvelettes at Wigan in the 70's I never made the connection between the two tracks. Marvin & Tammi - This poor heart of mine 04_This_Poor_Heart_of_Mine_Marvin_Gaye___Tammi_Terrell.mp3

Supremes - Mother Dear - This has everything - great vocals, sax all the way through in the same vein as "He's all I got" Smokey Robinson - Can you love a poor boy - not a dancer but Smokey at his best 03_Mother_Dear_The_Supremes.mp3 18_Can_You_Love_a_Poor_Boy_Smokey_Robinson___the_Miracles.mp3

Soul Patrol (johnny Vaughan) On You Tube
Stateside replied to Saxafone's topic in All About the SOUL
As someone who doesn't go to venues much these days other than the Orwell - The dancing thing is what the press latch on to. In most parts of the country blokes of our generaqtion won't even get up and dance with a woman, let alone on their own, so we are different from the majority to begin with. Add to that the style of dancing and you've got two reasons to be different. I have to confess I have two styles of dancing, one for Northern soul( and the kitchen floor) and one for weddings. The music is another issue, play any quality northern track to anyone who appreciates music generally and you get a positive response. Play a good quality track behind an advert or in a documentary and people prick up their ears. Add the two things together and you have a scene - like minded people meeting up to share their enjoyment of the same thing. No different than barn dancing or salsa dancing ( except you get to rub up against the opposite sex with the latter ) I suppose what I am saying is that we are paranoid - and yes they are out to get us -
two more "I can't break the habit" - Martha & Vandellas (track 26) This track never lets up - from one of those Motown albums featuring unreleased tracks that came out in the 80's "Love (the lonely people's prayer)" - Edwin Starr (track 20) one of his lesser known mellow mid tempo items that is full of strings and a full compliment of backing singers, with Edwin's vocals searing over the top of them all - fantastic!! came out on Motown not Gordy 26_Track_26.mp3 20_Track_20.mp3

some more Edwin Starr & Blinky - We'll find a way (track 17) Temptations - Ain't no sun since you've been gone (track 10) 17_Track_17.mp3 10_Track_10.mp3

Tons of underplayed motown Temptations - I gotta know now (track 2) Temptations - Lonely world without your love(track 01) Supremes - I'm gonna let my heart do the walkin' (track 03) Diana Ross & supremes - Now that I am in love again Edwin Starr & Blinky - We'll find a way Chuck Jackson - We'll find a way Eddie Kendricks - Cream off the top Supremes - You can't stop a girl in love 01_Track_1.mp3 02_Track_2.mp3 03_Track_3.mp3
