Bunker Hill - You Can't Make Me Doubt My Baby - Mala
pow wow mik replied to slimharpo's topic in Look At Your Box
Great track. got booted in the 70s but not sure how you tell. Seen a fair few on ebay but put of because of the boot thing. Unusually for a relatively obscure record, I saw this (you can't make me doubt) on some original Twised Wheel playlists. -
I think all versions stand up in their own right. I prefer the Fred Bridges cos it's a great bouncy R&b dancer and sounds great in a club but the Luther Ingram is a masterpiece and more classy piece of music i suppose. The WP is great too but let down by pretty poor sound on most releases i've heard.

I think the world is on a general downward slope to LCD yes, but then i'm on a downward slope from LSD.

not at my mod do you wouldn't.

Must not have been there when u first played it denbo, I listen to everything mate, I first heard John play it early doors at a fairly empty Hideaway, I got straight on the dancefloor and added it to the wants. My twtichy ear for early doors sounds, this time from Paul sadot also got me the Johnathan Capri. I dont give a f*** if Brian Matthews plays it, if i like it, i'm after the fucker. in fairness though, everyone can be having a chat and miss something now and then. I only just recently got that LB Wilson despite my mate Gav arno having played it at our club and since sold it - 10 years ago! i9 think the atmosphere of a club and the sound has a lot to do with doing new tunes their justice.

i'm after a copy of Twine time / gold miner. i have the issue with Chicken something on the flip & would swap + some cash if anyone wants to.

not that it matters, but John told me that Denbo picked it out in the US on a trip with John and gave him the copy. I heard it first of John at the Hideaway. Anyway, good work all round! I played it at the Mousetrap the other week Al.

be careful of the acetates, they all seem to be different mixes. the acetates i've heard are seriously lacking drums in the mix on the 'i'll be waiting side' but have better mixes of 'love plays funny games'. I got the issue on Claire for 'ill be waiting' and it's the best mix of it. Willie J seems to be seriously hard, paid a wedge for mine, discovered by top lad Denbo i believe.

No problem. yeah just about made it back cheers ! Yes i got the Rollers but not the John & carol, though known that for a while since hering Pikey's play it. Both are one's I'd play if the atmosphere was right, they're both pretty fast, so would play if dancefloor was full. Do you think they'd go down well there? what sort of stuff have you found to go down best there?
-
there's a lot of versions but dont know that. just a guess but could be Soul Inc. on Movement, b/w 'give the drummer some'. guessing at that because the other sides a funk tune too. My favourite version at moment is George Benson's '66 Colombia 45

Manships Finishing Prices For Tonight Please
pow wow mik replied to Gasher's topic in Look At Your Box

I'd be wary of putting too much faith in younger generations to sustain the value of old soul records. There were a lot of young people buying records in the Acid Jazz era, nearly all of which are worth less now. and as the older generation 'retire' or sell up, a massive flood of even the rarer records could hit the market. Like Roddy said, I never look at them as an investment. I get pleasure out of them now and make the most out of playing them, listening to them, dancing to them and socialising while doing all those. I look at them as other people do skiing, nice cars or holidays (all of which i happily do without) and pay money for them to enhance my life now, not in 30 years time. I've paid over the odds many times in order to get a wanted record quick, usually in order to get it played out at a a do quicker. if someone's benefited from that need, then good luck to them. I dont care, I dont see why others would. Enjoy it while it's here and f*** the future.

it is another issue of 'that's a lie / looking' ?

Casey & the pressure Group is quite common and got played in Blow Up type clubs in the 90s, goes for about £15. They were a Dutch group who also did a storming version of Comin Home Baby on an LP and very elusive Dutch only 45.

I owe you a few for hearing it in the first place! It's in the club listing, we play mostly 60s R&B flavoured soul, R&B, ska and boogaloo with an emphasis on newer and lesser known stuff...it's in the club listings, this one features special guest Mace, who i'm sure a lot of you know: /calenda...p;event_id=7363 cheers, all welcome. Only a fiver for 7 hours of top quality music in a great venue. top 10 as an example, sorry for the plug...but it relates to the thread in that it's a city centre venue and in 2006 when we did 4 nights, we got a great crowd of young and old all together enjoying the music, not really under the banner of any 'scene' and without playing wedding music. Johnathan capri - gonna build me a mountain Sounds of fm - adolescents theme Bill Mcaffey - I dont know why Jimmy Mccracklin - what's that Harvey Lantz - Little boy blue Little Nicky soul - I wanted to tell you Johnny Barnes - nothing without your love Willie j charles - feelin Kinda Lonesome Billy Hamlin - if you aint got no bread you might as well stay in bed Thornton Sisters - I keep forgettin' etc etc
-
ouch! i'd pay 10 times that
-
i agree. I think the very thing that is most attractive about these scenes (apart from the geat music obviously) is that it's the people deciding what they like without any corporate or commercial influence. The originals only ethic, as well as serving other purposes, means that they can't even sell us what we play or make any money from it, making it immune from commercial influences. In a day and age when nearly everything is packaged and sold by big business, I think it's one of the last bastions of real grass roots culture left that's run by people just because they love it and the more sick people get of being told what to like, you'd think it would become more attractive. Hope so anyway.
-
I think the sudden appearance of a quite a few when it was previously very hard looks like a stock-find that's still being slow released to me. There could still be only 100 copies for all anyone knows, so worth that money. You dont see it on every dealer's list like a lot of £150 records for sure, indicating that it's never been sold in bulk. And it's a belter, r&b that doesn't sound too dated

Ov Wright Unmarked Grave / Help Needed
pow wow mik replied to Marc Forrest's topic in All About the SOUL
another sad story while far lesser talents continue to rake it in. For years i've loved his 'we're still together' on Hi in particular, and it's always been a $1 record so must have sold a few. hope he gets the respect he deserves. -
yeah, think there are, but I think they're just the made to oder boots like the rest, not a whole pressing. been expensive for years due to the Belgian scene, too expensive for me too.
-
that's where I first heard it. cheers!

that Kings Go Forth has certainly got a good sound, but I find the main problem nowadays is good songwriting. Mercy was at least a good song, just produced blandly and ineptly. Recently I really like Sharon Jones '100 days 100 nights'. Retro or not, it's just a strong tune and the production is impeccable. I too would be interested to hear some new soul, even if more modern sounding, if anyone can post clips up.
