Soul Brother have helped me out with my remaining RSD wants; The Albert Washington LP, Garfield Fleming 12" and Kirk Franklin 7" so can now concentrate on some of the suggestions in Shufflin's New Releases thread 😉

Upcoming H-D-H Book
Strange that both books are coming out within weeks of each other; timing something to do with Motown's 60th anniversary perhaps? Will be interesting to find any contradictory anecdotes...

Record Store day 2019
Happier this afternoon. On my works travels today passed a store I knew was participating in RSD and managed to get: Sharon Ridley/Ralph Graham 7" The Modulations 7" Darrell Banks 7" (they had about 10 copies of this left!)😮 Northern Soul 7" Box (Not So ) Modern Soul 7" Box That just leaves the Albert Washington LP, the Kirk Franklin 7" and Garfield Fleming 12"....

Record Store day 2019
Managed to get the Alice Clark LP, cost £38 mind, from the most local RSD store to me. Only other albums of note were the Irma Thomas LP at £18, The Al Green Hi Singles Box at £115ish and the Texas Soul collection at £32! Didn't get to the store until 1.30 so they may have others but the store (and area) not renowned for Funk and Soul music so happy I at least got he Alice Clark. @Godzilla Wish there was a store like yours where I live. Maybe need to plan a weekend to Scarborough next RSD.

Were There Any Older Guys At Wigan?
Presumably all the 16 year old Wiganites that attended the Casino from 1973 must have looked pretty old to the 16 year olds that only started going in 1980. Just saying like 😉

How Modern is Modern?
I take your point Mark, and I do consider myself an "across the board" black music fan. I believe it is the human element involved in playing the music so that even in the 60's 4/4 dance beat you can hear slight differences within the track whereas electronically created sounds simply don't. As I said it is the vocals that generally elevate E.D.M. or innovative producers such as Louis Vega. I am, of course, always prepared to be convinced otherwise and will give the electronic stuff a listen.

How Modern is Modern?
That Jasper Street Co. cut is what I consider to be soulful house. Personally I find a lot of the 'beats' employed in house somewhat formulaic with the occasional tune elevated by the quality of the vocalist(s).

How Modern is Modern?
Yes Ste but will it be still be contemporary in ten years time? ......

Record Store day 2019
The Ralph Graham track is the flip side to the Sharon Ridley 7". I am hopeful for the Alice Clark LP but we shall see. Maybe the Box set 7" if they are about.

Record Store day 2019
Reading most of the posts above I get the feeling that many are underwhelmed by the RSD 2019 offering. The Soul Brother show yesterday played a good overview of some of the Funk/Soul items being made available. https://www.mixcloud.com/soulbrothersounds/soul-brother-selection-rsd-2019-preview-special-7th-april-2019/ Difficulty is finding a store locally to me that is likely to order a lot/any of the Funk/Soul items and with many limited to 500 pressings across the 200+ stores involved I do not fancy my chances but we will wait and see.

Soul dancing
On this subject, soul dancing, there is an interview with Mister Tee (of Real Side Records) on Soul On The Real Side vol. 8, that suggested Northern Soul dancing was nothing new (in the '70s) since Tommy Hunt was making a lot of those moves back in the 1950's!

Durand Jones & the Indications 'Don't You Know'
If anyone is in any doubt that quality soul music is not produced in 2019 they should take a listen to the Durand Jones album American Love Call. Absoulutely superb.
